Our stay at Riu was nothing less than amazing. Traveling with children/elderly family members can be stressful but the resort staff catered to every need. Traveling with a toddler can be particularly stressful at meal times. Sandy Santana is absolutely amazing and took great care of my entire family especially my 4 year old son. He had such a great time he now calls Sandy his uncle. We will be back again soon :0)

Great resort not so good for kids...

We stayed in a junior suite at riu palace Punta cana. At first glance this is a great resort, beautiful renovations have been done and it looks like a palace. Most staff have adequate English but that's ok because since it isn't a English speaking country. They try their best to interpret and translate. Rooms are cleaned daily however I did notice that some days the same sheets and pillow cases were used instead of being changed. I guess if it doesnt look soiled who will notice right? Well surprise people do notice especially if there is a mark or distinct stain. House keeping do come a couple of times during the day to see if you need anything like towels. Also the fridge is also kept stocked so on the mini bar I would say there are no concerns there. We did leave tips for the cleaning staff so I wouldn't say that was an incentive to do a better job because there was days I didnt leave a tip and it was the same level of service. Food was great, some cooks are better than others, when eating food that is somewhat repetitive you will notice that certain chefs are better when you taste the quality. I noticed this at the steak house when I had lobster and steak, one day it was fantastic, the next day it was subpar and overcooked.

I will leave criticism for the management to review as there are a few things that I think needs addressing. The kids club needs renovation and new staff, upon seeing it the first day I found the staff member sleeping in one of the rooms which is very inappropriate and disrespectful. Your staff should be there ready for guests to greet and be enthusiastic and friendly so kids may feel safe and welcome. The washroom was out of order, no water to flush the toilet. You might as well put a sign there "self serve" use at your own risk. The only positive area there is the kids pool.

Another area for improvement is hire more people for entertainment, there isn't enough to go around. Make some childrens games and not just games for adults. When you market yourself as a family resort it should reflect that. Entertainment was not suitable for children if it was even on. Some nights there was no entertainment show. On these nights all staff were diverted to parties that only suited adults. For example white party/glow party/pool party/ etc... these are for adult audiences. I would say you need to hire more staff and do both to appease all audiences. Let's be honest money is not the issue here, there is tonnes of it as the price of the resort can be proof of that. So this can be easily addressed.

Riu Palace punta cana is a great resort, the pools are great, beach is nice but does have sea weed. Staff are friendly and helpful. My recommendations above are the only concerns I have and I hope management take it seriously if you really wish to differentiate yourself from the other riu resorts. Just because the front is a palace doesnt mean the other areas in the back dont need to be of the same calibre.

Super-clean resort hotel with great staff

Only the second time I've been on an all inclusive holiday, but Riu Palace ticked all the boxes.

Food - mostly great, lots of choice. On-site there is a buffet restaurant, a beach restaurant which was mostly steak (although this turns into a buffet lunch spot), an Italian (mostly seafood), Japanese and a Tapas. There is also a coffee shop with some sumptuous desserts and a sports bar.

We mostly used the buffet restaurant which had loads of variety including some local dishes. A special mention for the excellent service shown by Joel, Wandy and Peña - they were really attentive and great fun, making a big fuss of my girlfriend's dad who was celebrating his birthday. We saw these little shows often during the holiday. There is never any waiting and the staff work incredibly hard and look like they are enjoying themselves, always smiling, a credit to the hotel.

Staff around the pool serving drinks were excellent as well, Anthony was like my personal waiter. I don't know how they remember what to bring everyone let alone guess what I want but they did. They even brought drinks to the pool. The ice cream guy was a nice touch as well.

Around the pool there is a bunch of different activities run by the excellent 'Animacion' team. I saw some reviews saying that the staff only wanted to speak Spanish, this is not what I noticed at all, they spoke good English and some German as well as Spanish.

The activities were so much fun, special mention for Miguel and Jaime who are a great balance running the popular aquafit classes. Miguel was hilarious - always energetic, wearing daft clothes and making jokes. I did some step classes with Jaime to try and burn off the 4 course meals and they were great too. Everybody agreed they were fun and good exercise. I think maybe the class could be a little longer even.

Unfortunately at times the early morning classes were not very well attended which was a shame because they were really good. It wasn't the fitness team's fault, it wasn't until the 3rd day of my stay that the touch screen programme in reception was working and nobody mentioned it was there when we checked in. When I realised there were classes I got up a bit earlier to do them and saw hardly anyone around the pool, and nobody knew the screen was there, every time I pointed it out to people they all said nobody told them about it.

Check-in was good but it would be advisable to get the staff to mention this as it's really useful (when it's working), I would have done step sooner but had no idea it was on and it would no doubt help the fitness team get more people coming along, instead of getting up late and taking long breakfasts, not realising there are activities on so early.

Other activities included darts, bachata lessons, volleyball and kayaking in the pool which was great fun. The animacion team really make it what it is. On the days after the pool party when everyone was tired, Scooby Doo, Mickey Mouse, Mosquito, Cappuccino and Versace just ran around literally dragging people who looked vaguely convinceable off their sun loungers to get involved, and nobody regrets it!

I also read someone complaining that the activities were inappropriate which is strange as it was not my experience at all, in fact the opposite. Some days I saw drunk guests acting a little risqué, but this was at the party pool and the staff did really well to keep them in check, preventing them from disturbing other guests without discouraging them from enjoying themselves. If there were kids at the party pool then this was an error on behalf of the guest, not the hotel - they made three separate pools, one for volleyball, one for relaxing and classes, the other for partying with a swim up bar for this very reason (it used to have just one pool)

The other entertainment was pretty good. There are 2 evening and 2 daytime pool parties just round the corner which were great. There is a kids club from 1030am til 9pm, which the entertainment team regularly let everyone know about. They were really good with the kids from what I could see.

They had karaoke one night and dance shows the other nights. The circus act was good, burlesque was a bit lame as I think the theme has been done to death. There is a casino and two clubs, Pacha is nearby, Coco Bongo a bit further. They run a shuttle bus to the casino and Pacha but we didn't go. You will probably get hassled by the Coco Bongo sellers around the pool at some point, this was a little annoying but they have to make a living I guess.

The housekeeping staff cleaned the room every day and checked in the evening every evening that we were happy. Of course we were, because the cleanliness is the best thing about this hotel. I can count on one hand how many times I saw a fly and NO WASPS!!! The maintenence is insane, they have so many staff running around taking care of the place I have never seen anything like it!

The only problem I had the whole stay was the plumbing seemed to be connected to the electricity?! We had a power cut and the toilet was stuck in flush mode and overflowed (luckily clean water!) Housekeeping sorted this out very quickly.

Overall a deserved 5 stars. Thank you for making a special holiday!

Riu Palace Punta Cana was by far my favorite resort! Very nice place.

The shows, the service and the entertainment group was what made this place so welcoming and fun. My favorite entertainment crew member was "Scooby Doo". He was so funny and friendly. The other crew members were also nice and funny. They made every day super fun. Their dances and activities were hilarious. Overall I had a great experience here at this resort.
