How to Get There
Booked this resort through a travel agent. $1320 in Resort credit was to be included in the promotion and only received $715 in credits. (but never used the coupons) The room had ants and the bed was rock hard. They will give you a mattress topper that doesn't cover the entire bed if asked. So we went from a king size bed to a queen maybe using the topper. The A/C also wasn't working and had to call the front desk and they sent someone. The hotel staff was not friendly at all. Our room was two rooms from the very back of the hotel which there is a landfill directly behind the resort. Only plus about this resort is that no one under 18 is allowed. I chose this resort because it was only 2 years old, but seeing some of the public bathrooms near the front lobby area had me questioning how old they really were. They were dirty and old looking. The jerk chicken stand is pretty decent. Tried almost all the food places to eat and wasn't nothing that "wowed" me. I learned that there are 64 different resorts there, so do the research before you go. We visited Hard Rock casino and resort and that was a nice resort. I know I will not stay at any of the Riu Resorts again.
Here at the the Macao right now. Arrived Saturday. Was disappointed by reviews that gave poor ratings. I have to say RIU Macao has exceeded expectations. Do not hesitate to visit this property. Asked to be placed in newer rooms next to my sister and was easily accommodated. Thanks David.
Everyone here is more than willing to help out. The Dominicans are a very friendly group of people. My Spanish is limited, but everyone is happy to see I am trying. The college Spanish is coming back to this 66 yr old. Food is great. Pools and beach are splendid. Very relaxing. The drinks are good. Saw the Michael Jackson show tonight and it was enjoyable.
This was our first visit to Punta Cana and we loved it. Food and drinks were very good. Rooms were being updated after we left which will definitely be an improvement. Beach was excellent except for the rough waves. Felipe our beach waiter was the absolute BEST!!! Great pool and service! Would definitely go back again!
We booked our trip through our travel agent and was a nice adult get away with family. We had a total of 6 adults. Getting through customs fairly easy. You will have to pay $10.00 USD/pp to obtain a “Tourist Card” enter the DR. It is actually a piece of paper. Our vacation included the transfers to/from the hotel, so we found the transfer and were quickly shuffled off to the bus and on our way to the hotel. Hotel was just a half hour away so that was nice.
First time staying at the RIU, so did not know what to expect. We booked an Ocean View All inclusive. Upon check in, The front receptionist tried to downgrade us to a garden view. Previous reviews here said that they had a habit of trying the “bait and switch”. We showed the receptionist the booking and she tried to tell us that “that is not what we paid for”. I told her that unfortunately she is wrong and that we are to get an ocean view room and if she could not fix it, that we would like to see her manager. We ended up getting the ocean view room so be persistent if it is not what you booked.
Room is a standard room. White room with blue curtains. Nice and clean. So no complaints.
Room had water, soda and beer which were in the refrigerator. Towels are plentiful.
There are 2 halves to the RIU. The (New)upper area where the Splash slide is at and the lower area (closer to the ocean)
The grounds are kept very well. There were always groundskeepers pruning the trees.
Beach is very nice. White beaches. Yes, you have to get there early if you want a palapa from the sun, otherwise your stuck in the sun. Only complaint, they do not rake or clean the beach so there is food and plastic in the sand. They do have a basket to put your cups and plates into but it gets so full as no one empties it regularly that it topples into the sand. There is also no beach drink service so you have to get up and get your own drinks. Not a problem as you need to get up and move. Only thing there is only one bathroom by the beach/pool bar so there was always lines.
Poolside chairs are plentiful and are usually not taken up very fast. With so many pools to choose from there was really no need to go early and grab a chair.
Biggest disappointment: The bottom shelf liquor and beer. If you like cheap liquor, have at it. It was really hard to find any middle shelf liquor and they hid it well. In talking with people at the resort, the biggest issue that they said was the lower tier liquor. However, I do have to give a complement to Jose at the pool/beach bar. Thank you for making Purple Rain’s. That saved our trip!!
Food: We ate at the buffet a couple of days. Food was good and a lot to choose from. However buffet was usually the same thing for lunch so got old quickly. Also went to Quisqueya (Steakhouse)- It was a very nice sit down dinner and the meal was really good. Really enjoyed it and a must do. We also went to Tarantella (Italian) – it was a bit unusual and it was a buffet style restaurant. Never really had a specialty restaurant be a buffet. Food was ok. Did not try the other specialty restaurants as the other people in our group did not care for any of the other food. Waiters/waitresses at the restaurants you had some good and some not so good. We always tried to friendly and nice and they were usually ok with us.
Entertainment: You had daytime activity personnel trying to get people involved with various activities both at the beach and at the pool. Some had prizes associated with them. The same music however played everyday poolside so it got old very quickly. They really need to switch it up. The evening entertainment which are usually the same people during the day tried to get people up and active. Prior to the main entertainment they would try to get people dancing so they would go around and ask you to dance. Then the evening entertainment would come along. The nighttime entertainment on a resort has some good and some bad.
So the question is… Would I come back? I would have to say that there are other countries and all inclusive’s facilities that get it far better than the RIU. I don’t know if I would come back to the RIU in the DR but if you want really a place that is inexpensive and cheap this is for you.
Well I have to say the hotel, room, grounds, staff, beach, water, private pool area were all very nice and I have only good things to say about those amenities.
The breakfast buffet was very good in my opinion, however the lunchtime buffet was growing very tired by day 3. The evening restaurants: Japanese was the best, Krystal was #2 and Italian was #3 - the steakhouse was crap. (Sorry but I would not have fed that to my dog it was disappointing) the coffee bar was very nice along with lounge bar.
Just one pet peeve - people leaving cups/straws and junk on the beach and in the water - that gets my goat... also one more the guys that have the monkeys/parrots/iguanas for picture taking for a few dollars - will put the animal on you whether you want to or not or whether u are paying attention or not -I had a 2 for iguana put on my lap when I was not paying attention. Not cool...
Despite both my wife and I got I’ll for a few days we made the best of it. This is a beautiful resort - but bolstering the lunch offerings and the steak house would help to get me to come back...
