How to Get There
Great resort, the employees really made our trip unforgettable. Beautiful beach and pools. Shout out to our butler Warnes! Naikol and Wilkin at the buffet, you always made us smile and we looked forward to seeing you every morning! Favourite pool was the quiet preferred pool, great spot to relax and has two of the best bartenders on the resort; Alejandro and Fraudicio we will miss you, thanks so much for making our week amazing!
Currently staying at the resort and wanted to write a review to let others know what kind of place this really is!
Let me start my review with this: we LOVE Punta Cana. We like it so much we come here 2/year and convinced 20 plus friends to come here.
This is the first resort that makes me NOT want to return here.
All the good reviews you read are probably from people who get paid to write reviews or from people who upgraded their stay to platinum. Upgrade will be the key work of my review :)
So this is how that works: You arrive here thinking what a good deal you got, you are happy, cannot wait to jump in the nice blue water (which here is green???) but right away they make you question your choices and they offer you to upgrade. You don’t even know what you are upgrading because you have not seen anything yet, but it is right there for you to think about!
So this upgrade: they offer it for like an extra $1000/week...(if you don’t bite than they BS for a while and comes down to $600/week). First thing they do when you walk in!!! no welcome! here is a nice drink; nothing of that sort; rather I have this room ready for you but it’s far, not a good location but if you upgrade you will get a really nice room... So right away you have this in your head: I don’t know how my accommodations are but I could have it so much better...should I/can I? Maybe I should call mom for a quick transfer....
In our case we decided not to call home so our options are pretty limited here. :(
If you decide to just take what you originally signed up for: all the nice restaurants you see on the pictures: you won’t be able to eat there. Beautiful buffet by the beech: yup, not for you either.... In the middle of the day: no nice lunch for you by the pool/ocean like in MANY Caribbean resorts, you have to go change clothes, dry off because your buffet is far from everything and is air conditioned and cold you cannot enter even if you are slightly wet!
So disappointing. Closest pool to our room we cannot use, again platinum only....
this resort kind of makes me feel like I am not good enough...:(
So probably the upgrade is worth it but prepare to spend extra $$$ if you want to have a 4+ star experience.
There are other dissapointing little things too, but no resort is perfect... if they make you feel good you overlook those things.
Otherwise food OK, cleanliness Ok, staff OK but definitely not the Caribbean feel we love.
I talked to others staying here and they feel the same way too! I honestly don’t know where the good reviews come from. This is a 3 star resort at best!!!
Honestly, this is the first time when I am looking forward to my vacation to end. I HATE this feeling when I can’t eat/play in certain places! A vacation should make you feel good not like you are not good enough. Other resorts have this upgrade option, but the difference is not like this. I will make sure to spread the word about this!
Wonderful resort, beautiful grounds. What made this a 5/5 vacation was our butler, Rafael!! Whatever we needed he always came through. He exceeded our expectations from a customer service perspective. We had a beautiful ocean front master suite with plenty of room. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean.
My only suggestion would be to make one of the smaller pools "adults only". We would return to this resort for future vacations.
The room we had was large and spotless. The bed was superb and has made me want to change my mattress at home. I haven't had such a good sleep since I returned. The gardens and ground are immaculately kept. The beach is beautiful with powder sand and is raked to keep it looking good. There were many dining options. We liked the food at the beach for lunch time and made our way round the various restaurants at night. I liked that you didn't have to book but just turned up and asked for a table. All the food we had was very good and we liked all of the places we tried. You don't have to bother with the all inclusive bands either. The bar served known brands too. There was always a wait person hovering waiting to take your order. Take American dollars as everywhere accepts them. We found the hotel shop vert expensive($28 for a bottle of sun cream) but there weren't really any other options. Beware of staff investing you to breakfast. They are selling their 'holiday club' which is different from time share they will tell you! There were always sun beds available but not always an umbrella if like me you need shade.
Located near the airport we arrived at the hotel lobby of the "Garden Section"in about 40 minutes after stopping at two other hotels.Check in was quick and we were shown to our swim up room only to find that we had paid extra for this and couldnt see the pool from our terrace. We werent able to change our room until day four due to availability. This room was great
Rooms...4/5..The layout was odd but it worked for us.The safe and wifi were included and worked great as did the A/C.The bed was very comfortable .There was supposed to be bath robes in the rooms but we didnt have any. This is a very small section of the Larimar with about 150 rooms so getting around takes just seconds.
Service...4/5..The service was actually incredible with a few exceptions. At the beach and the Larimar lobby there are more than enough staff to handle the guests drink orders. You will never go without. We also found the waitstaff in all restaurants to be hard working and well organized.Top marks here. The problem was in the Garden section only. Our in room mini fridge was filled only 7 of our 14 nights despite 4 visits to Guest Services to have this remedied.Plain and simple Omar was not doing his job.Secondly the service at the swim up bar in the Garden section was painfully slow and sometimes non existent. On one occasion I got out of the pool and went to the lobby to get a drink because bar staff we too busy taking tequila shots with their friends to serve other guests. On the bright side and to our surprise we were sent chocolate covered strawberries and champagne for our troubles.
Beach...5/5..Nothing short of incredible.Very little seaweed while we were there and with a power rake attached to a tractor the Larimar beach is the cleanest within walking distance in both directions. The Garden section is almost a 15 minute walk to the beach.A shuttle will take you to the main Larimar lobby which helps but service should be provided right to the beach. This is not good for anyone with children or mobility issues.Yes there are many annoying vendors on the beach constantly harassing you to look at their wares
Food...4/5..Generally the food was good but lacked the "wow factor".The main buffet is a fair walk from the beach .This was a struggle for us.The only restaurant at the beach for lunch is for Preferred Guests and remained largely empty. For regular guests your only option is the Barefoot Grill.A snack bar with rubbish like burgers and hot dogs with no fresh fruit or salads and nowhere to sit and eat it.This was the worst part of the food when staying for 2 weeks. The Coco Cafe was an absolute gem.See Marie and ask for a vanilla frappe. You can get sandwiches and sweets here as well that we found very enjoyable.
Activities..3/5...With daily turn down service you get a sheet of paper with the following days activities. At the beach where we spent our time NONE of these activities ever happened.I would plan my day around the things I wanted to take part in only to find out :Oh we are not doing that today".I would call this hotel very lame for those who want to stay busy with activities. You have to find things on your own.
Nightly Entertainment....3/5...Some shows like the Queen Tribute band were awesome. We also enjoyed the Rock Show,Magic Show and Circus. The animation team did most of the other performances and we found them fairly unskilled and not entertaining.Prior to the nightly shows there are a variety of music artists in the plaza....some nights were great others not so much
So the big question is would I go back.If I go back I would stay in the Garden Section again as it is a quiet mostly older crowd whereas the main Larimar pool can get quite loud with many families and generally a younger crowd.
The Larimar will be on our list for next years vacation but we will keep our options open .We have been traveling all inclusives for over 30 years and although this hotel has a lot to offer there are many others in this price range that can give you a similar experience
