How to Get There
My husband and I spent 2 weeks at the Now Larimar Punta Cana in late January/early February of 2018. We do not recommend this hotel. We’ve stayed at many hotels (all inclusive) and otherwise over the years, this would go to the bottom of the list. The food, very little variety at the buffet, mostly bland food. The specialty restaurants were a laugh, and our interactions with the food and beverage manager were horrible. Pool was ok, beach was lovely, but usually too windy to sit there. Now that you folks are planning your winter holidays, give this one a pass, spend your money elsewhere!
Regarding cleaning of the rooms.....I watched the maid “clean” glasses in the room, she took them to the sink in the bathroom, rinsed them, and wiped them with a used washcloth, then put them back on the mini-bar. No soap involved!
This was my second time in the Dominican Republic. Now Larimar is a nice hotel with beautiful grounds, decent beach and good food. I've been to a lot of all-inclusive hotels (over 11) and I wouldn't say that this resort was in my top 5. However, there isn't much to complain about - you're on vacation after all.
ROOMS: We upgraded to a "partial ocean view" room and let me tell you, it was very "partial". It did guarantee that we were on the top floor though and that was nice.
HOTEL: The grounds were VERY clean, lush and well kept. I like the layout of the hotel in that, the entertainment area, shops and restaurants are far away from the rooms. It's almost like a little town square. Very charming.
ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment team was fantastic, probably one of the best I've ever seen.
SERVICE: Overall, the service was great. Especially the guys who bring you drinks on the beach, the bartenders and other resort staff. The only place where the service lacked was the buffet with waiters often coming by and asking if we needed something and then forgetting, and never bringing us what we asked for. I'm fine with getting my own drinks but we often had cutlery missing or dirty dishes piled up on the table.
FOOD: The food was okay. You can't make reservations for the restaurants so we ended up waiting over 30 mins for two of the places. I highly recommend the coffee shop in the main square. You can get treats, lattes, and other goodies there at any time of the day.
BEACH: Nice. There is currently a major problem with seaweed washing up along the shore. They do a good job of cleaning it up though. There's a guy driving one of those tractors along the beach all day long.
EXCURSIONS: We did an excursion to the monkey sanctuary in the rainforest and a cacao/coffee plantation. It was probably the highlight of our trip. Highly recommend it!
My ONLY serious complaint is about the people in the lobby and on the beach who are very aggressive trying to sell you timeshares, excursions, jewellery, babies (joke), and anything else you can think of. The second you step into the lobby to check-in you are bombarded by people trying to sell you something. I would suggest having other designated areas for these folks. I would also suggest not allowing local vendors to come onto the hotel property to try and sell your guests things.
We booked the Now Larimar after having stayed in the Now Sapphire in Mexico, a hotel which we absolutely loved and couldn’t fault, so we had high expectations for the Now Larimar.
When checking in we were given a towel and a drink which was a nice touch.
Our room was good. Nice and spacious and comfortable king sized bed, jacuzzi on the balcony was a nice touch too. The one criticism though was that there was an adjoining door to the room next door and you could hear everything from that room. You could listen to a conversation word for word. The people in the room next door kept us awake a couple of nights which was annoying, but not annoying enough for us to complain and then have to change rooms etc. The housekeeping did a great job of ensuring our room was spotless every day. It was a long walk down to the restaurants as our room was down at the pool end of the hotel, but this was fine we enjoyed the walk.
The restaurants were all good. I wouldn’t say amazing, but they were all good. The buffet had a good selection for breakfast and dinner. Our favorites were the French, and the Italian over in the now garden hotel. The hibachi night was a little disappointing-everything felt a little rushed and the chairs were crammed in so tight you were constantly bashing elbows with your neighbor sitting next to you. The food was still nice though and good to do something a little different.
The pools are all beautiful and kept spotlessly clean.
The beach is also beautiful and the staff do a great job clearing the seaweed.
The entertainment team work so hard and the number of dances they all must learn is astounding. The only minor negative is that the shows can get a bit repetitive, when staying in other hotels there is a different show every night of the week-like totally different. Here even though the shows were called different things, at least 3 of the shows during the week were of similar dancing. But having said that it was still impressive and enjoyable to watch every time.
A couple of staff members we really felt went that extra mile in making us feel welcome-Rosa from the preferred pool is an absolute credit to the hotel, her warm smile and demeanor really stood out.
Robert the bartender from the main bar and the preferred bar was also great and made us feel so welcome and like we were old regulars whenever we saw him. Both of these guys added that bit extra to our trip.
Overall, we found a couple of small things to be slightly below the level that we had at the Now Saphire in Mexico-the food being the main one, but the Larimar is about three times the size of the saphire so i guess this probably has a lot to do with that. BUT, having said that we had an absolutely amazing time at the hotel and just as good a time as we had before, and left very happy and missing everybody and everything at the hotel!
One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had, the service was impeccable and beyond what one could imagine, being gluten free and a vegetarian, Miguel Obispo, one of the managers, went above and beyond taking care of me. Highly recommended, and food was amazing but mostly the service from the staff is what o won’t forget that alone was unreal. Thank you to all and see you again! ~ Much Love, Jacquie (Princess Jasmine)
One of the best hotels ! I loved everything about this. Went with my niece for her birthday getaway and we had a great time. The staff is very friendly. Kudos to Scooby Doog, Mini baby, Baby face and Redbull from the entertainment team. Such a wonderful team, filled with love. Also kudos to the restaurant team Wilkin, Gabriel M, Beni. Great service and very friendly. Not forgetting the swim up bar guys, Roberto and his crew, made my niece feel extra special and sang a birthday song for her. Housekeeping ladies were all nice and always had a smile on their faces. Such lovely people. The only thing I disliked is that the pool closes at 6 pm. I feel like the hours should be extended especially because a lot of people don’t get to enjoy the pool before it closes. Other than that, from check in to check out! We had a wonderful time !
