This is a good hotel and this would have been a five star review if it hadn’t been for a lot of poor and dysfunctional service which let the hotel down.
First the good things:
The room was nice. It was a good size and well equipped. The beds were some of the best we've had in similar hotels. There was lots of space to put clothing and plenty of hangers in the closet. Everything works and the shower is lovely.
The drinks are reasonable quality. Even on the basic room rate, most of the spirits are branded. The wine is undrinkable but they do good cocktails.
The food is mostly good. We always found something we liked in the buffet restaurants. Unfortunately the food was often only luke warm and the plates were cold so that often detracted from what would have otherwise been really nice food if it was hotter. We ate in each of the a la carte restaurants and the food was good on the whole. Apart from a murdered steak which should have been medium rare we were usually happy. The best meal was in the Mexican- pescadillas as starter and tenderloin (cooked perfectly) with a bean sauce as a main.
The beach is good. There seemed to be a good number of sunbeds and umbrellas. It is all kept clean and well maintained. The beach bar is well staffed and the sea is nice. It's unusual for it to be too rough to swim in the sea since there's a reef offshore.
The watersports turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Having been used to complex booking systems and a "can't do" attitude in some places, it was nice to find that here it was simply a case of if it was free you could have it. The staff were helpful and practical. There was no sense that they were doing anything other than facilitating the sports. You can sail, kayak, paddle board and body surf. They will also lend snorkel and mask but we didn't see much snorkeling to be had as you're not allowed to swim outside of the designated area.
The entertainment was great. In eleven days we had two beach parties, three foam parties and three evening shows. Much of that occurred down at the Royalton side of the complex but for all of the parties and entertainment, Splash guests are allowed to join in. We liked the vibe and there was a sense of the hotel wanting everyone to have lots of fun.
The bars themselves were well staffed and usually the service was good and friendly. The best bar was the social bar at the Splash. We were well looked after by Elio and the team there. There's also lots of other places to mix things up. Beans cafe has coffee, cake and ice cream. We found Carolina there most days and she is a credit to the hotel.
The water park was a lot of fun. There are lots of different slides to suit everyone. Again, it is well staffed.
The pools are plentiful and there are a decent number of sunbeds. Both pools at the Splash have a swimup bar. There is never a shortage of towels for guests despite there being no card system. You just get towels when you ask. Unfortunately some guests were thoughtless and just left their towels on beds when they finished for the day. That meant that beds looked like they were occupied and families who were looking for empty beds went without sunbeds all because some people couldn't be bothered to stick their used towels in the bins provided.
The only really bad thing about this hotel is the service. There are two problems with the service: attitude and organisation.
While there are staff at the hotel who are hardworking and professional, they seem to be in a minority. Some staff are rude and some are lazy. A few examples- 1) Being ignored by bar staff at the Bellini bar was a frequent occurrence. It's not rocket science- I'm stood at a bar so the chances are I want a drink. As a batman, l think you should want me to have a drink. 2) Being stood at the lobby bar for ages waiting for the batman to stop chatting up teenage girls and remember there is a bar that needs to be run. 3-13) Being left without drinks for long periods of time on several occasions at various meals. This occurred regularly and we lost track of the number of meals where we saw several waiters and waitresses stood chatting rather than making sure guests had drinks. One of the most welcome sights was the introduction of self-service coffee at breakfast. I would suggest self-service water and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. A huge thanks to those who did look after us well despite being counter-cultural for this hotel.
As well as a generally lax attitude, one of the problems with service here is they way things are organised. For example the main restaurant is extremely well staffed, but that doesn’t translate into efficiency. There is one person doing water, another setting tables, one person getting other drinks and someone clearing tables. Each seems to have a very prescribed role and there seems to be no fexing or communication within the team. If I wanted water and (after waiting some time for the water guy) asked the person setting tables for some water, they would say “Yes, no problem” but they wouldn’t get me water or tell the water server that I wanted water. “Yes” seemed to mean, “It will come.” Staff were often stood around chatting when they knew something needed to be done, but indifferent to the situation because it wasn’t their job. As a result guests were often left waiting and mess being left while staff stood idle was the norm. I would suggest that there needs to be a change to a “everything is everyone’s responsibility” attitude. Teamwork and communication would go a long way to making this place a five star experience.
We had good fun, good food and good times. Thanks again to all of those at the hotel who were welcoming and attentive.
Single Dad took my two kids 13 & 11, with the water park, the diamond club pool and the beach at the Royalton, we had a thoroughly relaxing time. We are looking to go back here next year, though thinking Royalton as closer to the beach but either way we had a great relaxing time. (There are golf carts/transport constantly running to and from Grand Memories to Royalton less than 3 minutes, pretty much the same resort).
We either chilled and played in the diamond club pool, (big shout out to Jorge, Fabio, Carlos and Estefany, great service from the team). Or we headed to the water park we played and then went back to chill at the pool or sometimes the beach. Though we did the beach late afternoon as it gets crowded in the diamond club section of the beach to get a bed).
Kids enjoyed the food and the restaurants which were booked by our diamond club rep Hector.
Though to get a free meal the Japanese restaurant we had to go to the Royalton and listen to an individual sales pitch and see rooms, and he seemed quite upset when I didn't sign up for the sunwings lifetime membership, but the Japanese restaurant was fun!
We are definitely going back next year, the only negative we had was my kids had to share a bed in our 2 queen room, but the room was clean and the staff freindly.
See you in 2020
We spent a wonderful week here the end of February. We are a family of 4, with 2 kids age 14y and 11y. We did upgrade to Diamond Club and were happy we did.
Our building concierge Greg, was very friendly and helpful. Hector was I believe the butler, as well he was very friendly and approachable. On arrival we requested a cot for our daughter, which was promptly delivered to our room (2 queen beds) by Daniel who was so friendly, He often returned to check on us, to ensure we were not in need of anything. The buffet staff were attentive and very friendly, especially Melissa and the males who worked with her. Melissa always made sure I had enough Dominican water ( i.e white wine :) )!!!
We loved the Diamond Club pool area and spent a lot of time at the Diamond Club exclusive beach area. The staff at both these areas were again very friendly and promptly served us. At the Diamond Club beach bar, Eliseo went up and above and beyond in service, he was so helpful, friendly and welcoming. We noticed that he worked very hard to serve the guests! His team of co workers, Lenny, Yeison, Luisa, and Juan were friendly and helpful also.
The water slides were great and our kids enjoyed them!
Wifi worked well throughout the resort and on the beach.
The food at the Damond Club beach bar was great, the buffet was as well, we always had enough to choose from. My kids were happy to have ice cream and yummy desserts. The pool area at Grand Memories served tasty burgers, hotdogs and fries to have for a lunch snack. Beans cafe had excellent coffee and sweets and ice cream, and the lady who worked worked the week of Feb 25-Mar 4was so nice! ( I forget her name).
They were alway lots of carts to drive guests around, however we enjoyed the 10 min walk to the Royalton beach area. We stayed in building 29.
Overall, we really enjoyed this resort and have travelled to the US and other parts of the Caribbean before. I think we will definitely return next winter! The resort was very clean and well kept, we enjoyed then residents peacocks who seem to hang out there.
The beach was AMAZING, I love love love it! My husband and I walked a lot and the beautiful Caribbean breeze was the best!! It was a little rough the first few days, do not wear glasses in the ocean , we lost a pair each, lol
The vendors were there every second day on the resort, and I thought they were a little too pushy, and approached us a little more than we liked. Personally, i might of looked at items more, if they were not so forward. They were too much in my opinion, and I tried to avoid them. This is my only compliant about the resort.
Ramon frego from the main pool bar is great. Also Lisandra from the towels is a very nice girl. Thank you both! The people are all very kind but Ramon serves the best. He is an entertainer and will run for you!
