12/6/19 - 26/06/19 - 2 week all inclusive holiday for my other half and me. Should have been a wonderful holiday but unfortunately was not so.
On arrival we were blown away by the size of the hotel, the beautiful grounds, adequate room and very friendly TUI rep Fray (we cannot rate him highly enough). Unfortunately, being English seemed to go against us and it got to the point where we felt they must have had us up on some sort of “pub watch” poster for the staff to treat us like we werent even there.

We had a total of 3 (yes you read that right 3) room changes listed below:

Room 2103 (1st room)

Shower curtain not suitable - it either “hugged” you in the shower or water leaked all over the floor!
Terrace door lock not secure - literally a child could break in it was that loose, if we’d bought a drill and some screws we would have fixed it ourselves!
Light fittings fallen off on the bedside lights exposing wires!
Ceiling fan not secure - pretty sure if we left it on it would have fallen off it was literally like a hula hoop!
Had to restock our own fridge with drinks as not done by the cleaner - just frustrating!
Leaking air con into electrics/light fittings- scary to say the least - this was the final straw to get a room changed 3 days in!

Good points - large comfy bed and pillows, nice dark room, huge round bath, easy to use and secure safe, quiet location and dark so ideal for sleeping!

Room 2518

Faulty toilet seat - not only pinched your leg when it slipped but it was like being on a roller coaster!
Shower curtain not suitable - are previous comment on room 2103.

Noisy and smelly air con
Dirty burnt iron, fortunately I bought paracetamol to clean it myself after it ruined one of my partners tops.
No WiFi or tv for 48 hours - this was a huge bug bear, although in the DR you shouldn’t need it but it’s what we paid for and had technicians out 4 times in total to “fix” this never got rectified and made for the 3rd room!

The 3rd room was supposed to be an UPGRADE to privilege with all the trimmings ha ha ha (total sarcassam intended). We had to wait until 2pm to call reception. To arrange a driver to collect us and are repacked luggage to take us to room 713!

Room 713
Apparently this was an upgrade to Priviledge due to issues, we did not receive privilege passes nor service.
Air con leaked here on first evening of being in room - fortunately not into the electrics this time. The engineers came out quickly to q, we were happy again!
Coffee machine does not work, it didn’t heat up at all and the on light would flicker intermittently!
Fridge not plugged in, once we noticed we plugged in but did it get cold, oh the joys of a non working fridge when in temperatures over 30 degrees!
No hammock on arrival
Room not cleaned well in particular the bathroom had hair and “bits” in it which I cleaned myself.
No pool towels given.
Had to play hide and seek for tv remote after cleaner had been and found it wedged in sofa.
2nd air con leak in this room - got fed up waiting for engineers so went out and to our surprise had come back to it being done and cleaned up.
Room service ha ha ha now this was just comical. Although it turned up within 30 mins we ordered a chicken sandwich with fries and a club sandwich with fries. Neither had the stated salad in and the club sandwich definitely did not have bacon in it. Both sandwiches were tine with the crusts cut off and the chips were cold and like cardboard - don’t bother with room service food. Oh and also we were just handed plates through the door whereas we had seen other guests getting theirs on a tray - a small but irritating lack of care!

Beach towels - fortunately we had bought a few of our own beach towels as on at least 3 occasions they didn’t have any at the beach towel stand and not even an apology! Helpful hint IF you were to come here BRING YOUR OWN TOWELS!!!

Biggest fault is lack of care from hotel and no apology received. This was advertised as a 5 star resort when we booked it. The resort itself is beautiful however the service we received was far from 5 star. The potential for this to be a 5 star resort is clear but something needs to be done about the service and disrepair in areas.

Oh and to add insult to injury three power cuts on our last day which also stopped any water so we couldn’t even shower before leaving.

Not once were we asked if we had a nice stay!

Do not stay here thinking you are getting a 5 star resort and service!

On the plus side the weather was amazing, we enjoyed the pool and the beach (seaweed didn’t ruin it for us) and we did 2 TUI excursions- Saona Supreme and Terracross Adventure, both we would recommend.

From the moment you pull up to the moment you leave, staff are hanging around you asking you personal questions about your relationship, your family, your age, etc. It's not just polite conversation, it's intrusive. They're also angling for tips. If you seem like you don't want to be bothered by their intrusive questions, and might not tip, they'll take your bags, move them over into their area, and then let you go over there to fish them out yourself.

When I checked in I was told the all-inclusive package wasn't really all-inclusive and I had to pay an extra $50 per day per person for bottled water and etc--which I did, of course.

The room was in terrible shape--the bathroom window had a thin rope or twine around the handle due to the lock being broken. There was a lot of black mold in the bathroom and shower. The room felt dirty, dreary, and depressing.

The restaurants/buffets were really poor quality. We are vegetarians and we could barely find anything decent looking at the buffet. Our paid upgrade gave us two meals at the onsite restaurants. We tried the Italian restaurant and to our surprise the menu was only in Spanish, When we asked to clarify if the dish we were looking at had meat in it, our waiter had to get another waiter, who got a manager because none of them understood English enough to answer our question. Our questions were never answered because they had such an attitude with us, we got up and left. The Asian restaurant that we really wanted to go to was under construction next door. And the pools and fountains up in the front of the resort were being painted at the time of our visit--so there was a lot of noise, disruption and chemical smells.

We had packed granola bars, dehydrated fruit, and crackers as snacks and wound up eating that for most of our meals. The only food that ended up being decent enough to eat was the pizza at the late-night snack bar. And we are pretty health conscious at home, so we didn't love eating fatty foods, but we really had no choice.

The pool was filled with dead bugs, and the pool area was littered with trash, plates, glasses, bird poop--for hours on end. They would get cleaned around 1-3pm and then around 9-11pm. That's it. The beach on the property was no better, there was so much garbage on all of the tiny tables that people were stubbing out their cigarettes into the sand because there was no room or ashtrays to put out their cigarette. Totally gross. They also allow people selling time shares, and excursions and other junk to come up into the resort area at the beach which seems a little unsafe when you open your eyes to find a strange person standing next to you and your purse, wallet, keycard.

When you want to go back to the front of the resort, you need to call and request a golf cart transport because it's really far and everything was under construction -- it just wasn't safe to walk on uneven, gravelly, or wet/muddy paths for a mile or more. Most often the golf cart would not show up. We'd have to call several times, and or go down in the heat and stand in the middle of the road to flag one down. The drivers would pull up next to each other and chat and laugh and act like they didn't have a care in the world--even if it was 95 degrees or rainy. No concern for their customers.

Literally the only nice thing about the entire resort was the Pure/Pura bar that was closest to the beach on the northwestern side of the resort. It was clean, the bartenders were fairly nice, and it didn't have a smelly, musty, moldy smell to it that most structures had. Only complaint is that they allowed children in the bar who put their feet and wet swimsuits on everything, and were generally quite loud and obnoxious. Can adults have just one area to themselves? Also, I found the premade drinks (Daiquiris and Margaritas) gave me a horrible headache, so Pure Bar was the only place to get a top shelf liquor on the rocks. We did not drink anything from our minibar for two reasons, we informed the maid that we preferred to have more bottled water than anything else so we could use it to brush our teeth and drink (signs in each bathroom said the water was not for human consumption) and secondly, the minibar fridge was just gross and we didn't want to try to mix a tiny bottle of something into a juice or tea--everything just felt gross and dirty.

When we spoke with the concierge or front manager about our issues with food, construction, and our moldy room, we were not treated nicely at all. The concierge literally said that if we wanted to eat vegetarian we would have had to tell them in advance of our stay. I've traveled to 20 countries and never experienced that before. They made us take them to our room to show them the mold and the broken window. Then sort of poo-pooed us even though it was exactly how we explained it. They begrudgingly moved us to another room and made a big production out of it as if they were doing us a favor--acting as if we were complaining for no reason. We continued to tip everyone from our housekeeper to the bartender, and to the bellhop who rudely moved our things to our second room--leaving our luggage at the foot of a flight of stairs instead of carrying it up.

I would not only not return to Catalonia Punta Cana but I would never return to the Dominican Republic, as nearly every person I came in contact with was unfriendly, intrusive, and had an attitude. Which really stinks for us because we love traveling to Latin countries, love Latin food and especially the music. My favorite performer is from the DR and now I'm just like blech when I hear his music.

Now that I'm seeing so many people getting sick at these resorts I wanted to share my experience. The first thing I thought of when these deaths were reported was the black mold everywhere. Stay safe.

Terrible Customer Service/Hospitality

I give this resort one star for the friendly and courteous staff, as well as beautiful grounds. Otherwise terrible!!! Room was dated, no outlets near bed. Was given a 25 foot extension cord that I had to run across the room and behind the headboard. Had a leak in the bathroom ceiling that was reported on the first day and they never repaired it during our 7 day stay. Buffet was the same menu every day. And they cups by the pool are old, dirty and cracked. I booked my vacation package through JetBlue and totally disappointed that they are in business with this establishment. My wife and I have been to the Dominican Republic 5 other times. Never had a complaint about the resorts but I felt compelled to write this review so no one else experiences what we went through. DON'T GO TO CATALONIA BAVARO BEACH, GOLF & CASINO RESORT. You've been warned!

I traveled with my sons (1 and 2 years old) and their dad. We also was with my brother in law, sister in law and their 4 year old. When we arrived to the hotel we were getting our rooms. We asked if we can be put in the same building and we were told no. Ok that’s fine. But then me and my family are taken to our room. The weather is hot and humid and the air conditioning was not working. So we tried to get some cold drinks and the refrigerator was not working as well. We decided to deal with it but when we came back from the pool our key card stopped working. When we spoke to the staff around the building they told us we had to go all the way to the front lobby. We were in the back of the hotel and and to travel with two kids. We told them this was not an option a the kids were hot and agitated and all we needed was for a cleaning lady to let us in the room first. They told us that was not an option and made us wait for more than an hour before switching our room to the building were my brother in law was in. Although they said it was not available.this room again had issues with regulating the air conditioning and the refrigerator was again not working. And this was only the second day. When we would ask for milk for the baby we were told we had to wait in until the morning to get any because the milk is for coffee. I would say that the staff we had was friendly but most didn’t want to be there and if u didn’t speak Spanish it was difficult to get any help which i understand we are in a Spanish speaking country but there was no direction to someone who could actually help. The food constantly made me and the kids sick and can compared to college donning hall food. Even the restaurants.

To the hotel- if you’d like a customer service consultant to come in and help you stop receiving this awful and get very true reviews, please let me know. I have a list of folks that need to be fired first. I also have those who need a serious promotion and retention plan.

Anyway...

Cons: customer service and friendliness was absent from this property
-Unfriendly staff (don’t say hello, don’t try to speak enough nor do they show you to someone who does) no hand to hand drop off (I. E. If I can’t help you let me find someone who can)
-Extremely rude staff (with the exception of Yoan, nilde, Armando, Esthailyn, Juana (casino), Carolina at the Japanese restaurant and Issa and his partner at the martini bar). The staff at the martini bar was wonderful.
-No desire to help
- food was ok to me, but I still eat McDonald’s so just expect subpar food like in the dining hall at college
-staff Couldn’t find a first kit for me and told me to wait for the doctor to arrive at 9 am, the accident happened at 6 am...so for two hours I walked around the property begging people to jump behind a bar to give me ice (no ice machines but ice buckets are available)
- pool smelled like sweat
- the rodeo restaurant ran out of food and we were not served dinner and was given an apology for the incident. Their rationale was “well sometimes this happens” my response is the staff did not communicate the lack of food on the property until 10:30 (an hour after we ordered and never saw a server again) the chef came out and lied and said the kitchen was closed. Then he brought out a random cold steak for our friend to eat, which was not edible nor what she ordered. As opposed to being deeply apologetic (how embarrassing for a chef to run out of food) he was upset, stomping his feet, berating the younger employees who yes wanted to go home but felt bad. They kept sending our most gracious server to th table to plead with us to be nice, and for his sake we did, but everyone else in the kitchen was rude, arrogant, unapologetic and take no pride in this establishment.

What’s really unfortunate here is that there are A LOT of great employees at this property. Because it needs probably well over 1k people to operate I’m sure it’s hard to find employees. If you’d like an HR consultant, I’m happy to help. But it also seems like folks don’t wanna get better? I asked for a ride somewhere on a golf cart and the man told me that isn’t his job—fair but use that walkie talkie to find someone who does have the job of transporting vacationers. Just the little things.

One thing I want to also highlight and I want to be sensitive while doing this. I do not think it is a rule that hotel staff IS NOT ALLOWED to fraternize. When I go on vacation I want to meet nice vacationers and be treated respectfully by all. I do not want the folks picking up trash, or setting my table to also be hitting on me or making other comments about my body, if I’m married or not, questions about where is my man/husband, etc. etc.

I do not think it is appropriate ever for someone on the time clock to make such advances to woman. I was traveling with three women and felt very uncomfortable being along from them because the men made comments AND THEN THEY WERE RUDE AND HOSTILE when I politely corrected their behavior and asked them not to engage in it again.

Please make a decision and then enforce it. Fraternization is typically not appreciated at resorts of this type and magnitude

Pros: you’re in one of the most beautiful countries in The world. for this and this only my trip was saved. If you are reading this and headed to the hotel—you will survive.
