How to Get There
This was our first visit to this Iberostar! We came with 4 friends between the ages of 45-74 and everyone enjoyed themselves. The beach area was lovely with plenty of sun or shade depending what we wanted that day. We did have difficulty trying to find even 1 pool lounger just to keep 6 peoples towels, bags etc on. The pool area was much smaller than most Iberostars. but it definitely didn't ruin our vacation. The food was very good wherever we ate everyday.A special shout out to ALBERTO at the breakfast and dinner buffet, he is a rock star taking special care of us!!!! The star friends were gracious and fun as always. Housekeeping took great care to clean and leave fun towel animals in our room. As always we enjoyed an Iberostar resort
After much research I believe Iberostar if the best resort in Dominicus-Bayahibe. I first booked the Catalonia and am glad I switched. The specialty restaurant food is good, while the buffets are average. The activities are plentiful and enough to keep everyone busy. The beaches are not crowded. The room are very comfortable and kept clean. The service quality varies tremendously, but everyone was very friendly. Our Concierge, Nady, was amazing and provided outstading service.
Patrons – The vast majority of guests appear to be European. Despite being USA college spring break, we did not see any college party kids, as they all went to Punta Cana. Smoking is allowed almost everywhere (not in restaurants) and it was noticeable but not as bad as you would find in Europe. Brush up on your Spanish as English is not spoken by many employees. I found Google Translate to be more than sufficient.
Rooms – We stayed in the Prestige Suite. There are 3 such suites and two have an ocean view. Ours was 4129. It was the largest of the three. 4127 has the best view but is slightly smaller. The other Prestige Suite has a pool view. They all sit on the roof of building 4. These and the single Presidential Suite (lower floor) you will be assigned a guaranteed room in advance and pay in full in advance. Our room was huge and had a great view. Ours was the best room IMHO in that it had its own gigantic private terrace and outdoor shower (plus in inside shower) which was great for cleaning after the beach. We had two entrances which was nice after the beach. The walls are massive windows on three sides. We loved our room. The room was a bit musty, but only noticeable in the bathroom and definitely not a problem. We only had turndown service once in 6 nights. We asked for extra towels and were inundated with towels. They will restock the drinks forever, but have a cap on the snacks, which I found odd. The décor is beautiful. Do not expect to watch TV, as the selection is not at all good. Instead stare out the beautiful view from your terrace. You can get a sunset every night from the room and terrace. We left a tip and note to change the sheets and they always did. The private terrace was a vacation all by itself. Amazing.
Restaurants – We tried three ala-carte restaurants (French, Mexican, Japanese). All were very good. The Mexican and French were flexible if you wanted extra entres or appetizers. All the food was well prepared and tasty. Juan Claudio, the French Restauramt matre’d, was a wonderful person and gave excellent service. Since we were in Star Prestige Suite, we were able to book all our meals when we arrived. Seating is very limited and I doubt you could easily get a table if you are in a regular room. We are happy we ate our dinners in the specialty restaurants all week. Be aware men MUST wear long pants to the French Restaurant or you will be turned away.
Buffets – The quality here was average to slightly below average. Breakfast was a basic American breakfast with plenty of choices. Lunch had a very limited menu, as did dinner. On occasion, we had to walk around 10 minutes to find a table at lunch and breakfast was equally as challenging. The selection never changed and could get old real fast. I am glad we had access to the specialty restaurants. The beach clam bake was rather good and popular. It seems as if they could double the clam bake and still run out. We are not heavy drinkers, but it seemed everyone was happy with the drink service. This can be improved, but at least it was consistent and healthy. We never got ill, despite our sensitive tummies. BTW – The drinking water, ice and cooking water are all purified. The tap water is not. They refill water pitchers using filtered water and we saw they used bottled water for drinks where filtered dispensers were not available.
Beach – Unlike other comments, the beach and the entire resort never seemed crowded (other than finding a table at lunch). Plenty of umbrellas and chairs. No need to get up early and hold a chair, even though some people did, unless you want an exact location. We had Star Prestige beach access, which included nice chairs, private bar, etc. We really loved it and the bartender gets to know your preferences quickly. Security kept most beach vendors away and we were never harassed, despite being adjacent to the public beach. Unlike other area resorts, the beach is gradual and does not drop off quickly into the water. The pools were even less crowded and always perfectly clean. The quality of the facilities was really impressive and you could tell maintenance is a priority. During a brief storm burst, the resort manager was running around with a walkie talkie telling staff where to come clean up water and debris.
Activities – There is so much to do, you cannot possibly fit it all in. Scuba, snorkel, kayak, sailing, aerobics, spa, water polo, pools, shows, archery, bingo, and so much more. My only complaint was that management allowed local vendors to set up shop on the resort at night. They were a nuisance, yelling at you, being pushy, and acting like annoying vendors. Please stop allowing this, or better teach them to be polite and not pushy. I understand they need to show guests local goods, but better monitor their behavior.
Spa – We had two spa treatments and they were good. Nothing great and nothing bad, just good. We would definitely do it again. It was nice to take an outdoor shower after the massage to washoff the oil. I did not notice a relaxation area, but it may have been there and no one offered. Besides, I could relax at a beautiful beach.
Star Prestige – This is a wonderful perk and well worth the price. This came with our suite, and maybe all rooms in building 4 (not sure). FYI – Building 4 is NOT adults only as some have stated here. The head concierge, Nady, was amazing. She gave her cell for anytime help. She made special arrangements, took care of room service problems, had special items delivered and made sure we got in any restaurant we wanted. She was even available outside of her work hours if needed. She is a superstar and definitely provided Star Prestige Level service. The rest of the “concierge” staff really was not very helpful and definitely have some room for improvement. They advertise 24/7 concierge service, but the person sitting at the desk after hours did not speak English and could not perform basic services. Nady made perfect arrangements and her back-ups failed to deliver. We departed on her day off and she left specific instructions for pickup (confirmed with her), yet the substitute concierge did not send someone as scheduled. They need more people like Nady. That being said, the Star Prestige perks were very nice and worth the money. You also get private beach access, premium drinks (you can even take bottles back to your room after dinner), preferred restaurant access, and more. I am a big fan of this class of room. And in case it was not clear, Nady is a fantastic concierge. We wish she worked at every resort we visited.
This was the second time to this resort and decided to bring my friend with me for a girl’s getaway. As with the first time, the service, room and food were great. I am a Club Member so I was able to use the Star Prestige lounge when I felt like having a quiet drink and using the Members only area on the beach with great lounges and great drink service. All service personnel were extremely polite, attentive and helpful; however, I noticed a larger language barrier than the first time. I was able to get my meaning across on several occasions but felt that servers in the restaurants should have a better understanding when you order off the menu in English and then have to point to what you want. Also, I asked for a wine list at each restaurant and it took many versions of asking before they brought it. This was my only complaint as the hotel itself was spectacular. I am definitely returning as I find the positives outweigh that one negative
I want to say this was one of the best resorts I have stay in. the rooms kept clean and the food was great. it is a quite resort no loud spring breakers. I found o be very relaxing. The entertainment was excellent look for Lenny,, Mama Wanna, Big Poppy. the drinks were good also. I highly recommend this resort and I will be back .
The property, people, staff, pool, beach perfect, lots of room, chairs, clean. Biggest disappointment was the food, the buffet was ok, lacking some nights in variety, the pasta bar was my friend. We went to the Steak house, nice location, atmosphere and steak selection but they were fried, a grill would be a huge improvement, the Japanese was good, entertaining, The Mexican restaurant should be closed and just put a taco bar in the buffet. An Italian or French restaurant would be more enjoyable
