How to Get There
We stayed 6 nights at the Pimalai after a busy Cambodia tour and enjoyed having the opportunity to relax at this island retreat. Unfortunately both our arrival and departure transfers were slightly chaotic experiences (creating less than ideal first and last impressions) but otherwise the resort was welcoming and the level of service was good. Our room was very comfortable and the standard of housekeeping was excellent.
The hotel did feel a bit big for our liking and seemed very busy - this was most obvious at breakfast and by the lower level pool where there was a bit of jostling for tables/loungers - but we did still very much enjoy our stay, making the most of the spa (which we thought was excellent!), both pools (especially the one at the top of the resort with a stunning vista) and the yoga/boxing classes (which were great - the instructor was very enthusiastic!). One suggestion might be to designate one of the pools for adults only, in order that there is always a peaceful area for those without children to relax - we found ourselves retreating to our room at times to enjoy some calm.
The meals/drinks we had at the resort's restaurants/bars were of good quality and selection although we found the "fine dining" option (Seven Seas) a little underwhelming and we were disappointed when our table at the beach restaurant (Rak Talay) was given away to some other guests one night, despite our having made a reservation and turning up on time. We actually ended up preferring to wander down the beach in the evenings to find a more relaxed and local vibe at alternative restaurants.
Let me first start by saying I have visited many 5 star hotels in the past month in Thailand and Pimalai outshines them all. The property is spectacular (pictures do not do this place justice), rooms are spacious and beautiful, and the service is world-class. I never left the property while I was there. They have a infinity pool up on the mountain where you can relax and watch the sunset, private beach area with all of the non-motorized equipment you can ask for, and 4 restaurants (food was amazing). The breakfast was the best I have had in Thailand. Most importantly, you were treated like royalty. The staff was so kind, helpful, and attentive. I was not feeling well and they went out of their way to take care of me including management (thank you Frank). They care about their guests and it really shows. I cannot wait to return next year. Do yourself a favor and stay here. I promise you won't regret it. Pimalai "a little taste of heaven" was one of the best experiences / stays I have ever had.
While we visited the Pimalai during the off season of August, we experienced an amazing resort. We selected one of the hillside suites with private pool. Definitely worth the splurge and at a discounted price for off season. We partook in the personal Thai cooking lesson with one of their chefs. The spa was amazing in a tropical setting that blew us away. All meals were incredible and the bar on the beach is not to be missed! Can't wait to go back!
