On the northern coast of Koh Samui, the Scent Hotel is a boutique retreat on the shores of Bangrak Beach. It’s isolated enough to feel peaceful but is within easy reach of the island’s thumping nightclubs. The overall design theme is 1940s and ’50s colonial Southeast Asia, and the 14 rooms are individually decorated in French, Chinese, or Thai styles. Scent is a defining feature; the hotel is the brainchild of a Bangkok brand known for its aromatic products and guests can customize the fragrance in their rooms. Aromatherapy is a key influence in the spa, while the Le Jaroen Restaurant is as much about the visual (star-filled skies overhead) and aural (the sound of lapping waves) experience as it is about the French-Siamese fusion cuisine.
In the Area
The island of Koh Samui, or Samui as locals and regular visitors call it, has a history that spans more than 325 years. It was discovered by backpackers several decades ago, but since the 1990s it’s become a present-day sophisticated enclave of excellent spas, dining and nightlife. The Big Buddha Temple is its most famous landmark, and the 39-foot-high golden deity is visited by devout locals as well as tourists. The hotel can also arrange private long-tail boat tours to the Five Islands to see caves, beaches and bamboo houses perched on high limestone cliffs, on islands that were until recently completely inaccessible to foreigners.
How to Get There
If you’re looking for a small hotel with exceptional service, Scent Hotel is for you. It hasn’t got the facilities of a big resort but the service is extraordinary. Vicky and her team couldn’t do enough for my husband and me. They calmly evacuated us to a sister hotel for three nights when the unusual cyclone hit nearby and when they heard I had become unwell there, they visited me with a fruit basket. When we returned from a snorkelling trip earlier than they expected and our room had not been made up for the day, she offered us free mango smoothies while we waited and the next day offered us both a complimentary hour’s massage in the hotel spa, one of the best massages either of us has ever had! Food is very good, you eat right by the sea: quite expensive, but no need to eat there if you don’t want to. Our à la carte breakfast was included in the price and was served to us which was more relaxing than a buffet, and the scrambled eggs were really delicious. There are probably better beaches on which to be located but we were happy with ours, swam in the sea and walked to the market and harbour one way and fisherman’s village the other: about a 15 min walk for both. Thank you, Scent Hotel, for doing your very best!
The Scent was a wonderful place for my husband and me to spend the beach part of our Thai holiday. The rooms are exquisite, furnished with lovely old antiques. There is direct access to the beach. The pool is terrific. The restaurant is exceptional (as is the included breakfast, it was our favorite breakfast offering of the entire trip, including some expensive top dollar hotels!) We splurged to have the private dinner on the beach and it was magical. The setting alone would have been memorable but the food was terrific to boot. The only oddish thing is that the bathrooms are open-floor without a door, though separated from the rest of the room, and not sound proof. The beach is pristine and feels private. The staff is wonderful and accommodated us in every way.
Are you looking for that Colonial Boutique Hotel feeling, look no more!
This hotel is one of my favourites in Thailand! Just between Bangrak and Fishermans Village you’ll find the most authentic british/french boutique hotel you’ll ever see again! Vicky the manager is so caring and fun, and she is full of happiness and joy for her hotel and she is always up for a chat! The food is very great and you should try the afternoon tea, with the snacks, served by the most stunning view of Bangrak and Koh phanang!
Thank you for great service Vicky❤️⭐️
Ms. A helped us book elephant sanctuary trip on Jan 2 afternoon. When we took a Grab after lunch from Central Festival, the Grab driver seemed get lost in middle of nowhere. With signal on and off along the road, I managed to get hold of hotel staff by email asking for their help. Hotel staff Ms. Nina talked to the driver and explained our itinerary to him. Thanks to her good sense, we made it to the sanctuary and had an amazing afternoon. Gratitude also goes to Mr. Us. The hotel name speaks for itself, it smells just oriental and elegant. Thank you again Ms. Nina, Ms. A, and Mr. Us.
I arrived at this gorgeous aroma caught my attention which I followed through an unassuming door way to this secret treasure at the waters edge. When I walked into The Scent Hotel I was greeted by two attentive smiles, a cold cloth and welcome drink. Shortly after this I was taken up to my room and noticed it wasn't the room that I had booked online, mentioned it to them and they were happy to move me across to the one I had. Once I settled in to this beautiful tranquil space I was able to unwind and take them up on their 2 for 1 massage offer, of which I enjoyed a 2hr massage to melt me into relaxation before my slipper tub bath over looking the beach, then making my way to bed. The room was perfect in every way and a exactly what I needed to complete my trip. In the morning I was able to choose from selection of delicious breakfast options. Overall I would say this is a lovely hotel. A great place to stay if you are looking for something extra special in every way.
