On the northern coast of Koh Samui, the Scent Hotel is a boutique retreat on the shores of Bangrak Beach. It’s isolated enough to feel peaceful but is within easy reach of the island’s thumping nightclubs. The overall design theme is 1940s and ’50s colonial Southeast Asia, and the 14 rooms are individually decorated in French, Chinese, or Thai styles. Scent is a defining feature; the hotel is the brainchild of a Bangkok brand known for its aromatic products and guests can customize the fragrance in their rooms. Aromatherapy is a key influence in the spa, while the Le Jaroen Restaurant is as much about the visual (star-filled skies overhead) and aural (the sound of lapping waves) experience as it is about the French-Siamese fusion cuisine.
In the Area
The island of Koh Samui, or Samui as locals and regular visitors call it, has a history that spans more than 325 years. It was discovered by backpackers several decades ago, but since the 1990s it’s become a present-day sophisticated enclave of excellent spas, dining and nightlife. The Big Buddha Temple is its most famous landmark, and the 39-foot-high golden deity is visited by devout locals as well as tourists. The hotel can also arrange private long-tail boat tours to the Five Islands to see caves, beaches and bamboo houses perched on high limestone cliffs, on islands that were until recently completely inaccessible to foreigners.
How to Get There
My husband and I stayed here toward the end of a busy 3 week vacation and were very happy. The staff were great and always helpful. At first our room did not have an outdoor space to sit on, but a room with a balcony and direct view of the beach was open and they were happy to move us. The room we moved into was much more pleasant as we enjoyed sitting outside - it was also on the second floor which I recommend. The first floor standard rooms open up to the pool, which I was glad to be up and more private.
The bath tub was comfortable, but took forever to fill, so be warned! It was great they provided pool pool towels and robes. We also very much enjoyed the beach chairs and umbrellas, the beach itself it not the best for swimming as it is shallow for a long time, but it is still great - and they have kayaks which were fun!
It is walking distance to other restaurants toward the pier, and we also walked to Fishermans Village (but taxi'd back) which was great. We were happy to stay away from the busy parts but be close enough. To be warned, it is on a busy-ish road but never bothered us.
The massages were also great, but more expensive than on the beach in the busier parts. We did use some points we had from our credit card so for us the price was very reasonable, so not sure about cost if were to pay full price. Overall, we really enjoyed it!
I first went to the Scent Hotel 4 years ago for lunch and fell in love with the incredible atmosphere, staff and restaurant.
I returned this time and have been loving my stay with many thanks to the warm reception, Miss Vicky's recommendations and guidance as well as Miss May's elegance from my first visit 4 years ago. Clean, personal, fresh water pool, quiet powdery beach with lovely staff that are never intrusive but understand the needs of guests and with that timing allows one to feel that the staff is like family knowing when a cool towel sprinkled with lavender and lemongrass is needed to a cup of tea after wheeling and dealing in busy Chaweng Beach area. It's a peaceful retreat that allows my energy to be refilled and balance to be acheived. Now that I have stayed at the Scent I don't want to go anywhere else as the peaceful and tranquil feeling is what stays with me whenever I am in Samui. Thank you again incredible staff including Ms. Vicky, Ms, May, front desk, cleaning and poolside restaurant - staff are what makes this home.
I had booked this hotel based on good reviews and nice pictures on the hotel website but I was very disappointed. I checked in after a long intercontinental flight and was requested to sign for payment without even having been showed the rooms or the property, which I regretted dearly accepting to later on. Already the fact that the hotel is right on a very busy street doesn’t contribute to the overall experience, but worse was that there was a loud building nose from an adjacent construction site (right next to the hotel), with works that wede not anywhere close to being finalized. The noise was audible in all rooms, and also on the (tiny) beach at the back. Rooms were nicely decorated but don’t have any outdoor space, most have a view on the pool area, which is quite squeezed and doesn’t have proper loungers. When I informed the hotel that I would prefer to move somewhere with no noise to be able to rest properly they refused to reimburse me. All management cares about is making cash, much nicer places can be found on Koh Samui for the rates they charge, absolutely not recommended! Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere with a proper beach, away from the traffic noise, this would be a fairly alright city hotel, but this is not Bangkok after all.
Judging by the online pictures it looked as if the rooms were spacious and that it had a big beachfront. Upon pulling up to the hotel we saw a tiny doorway which had me and my wife thinking this doesn’t look right. We were received politely by Nina the receptionist. Upon going to our room the room was to be a beachfront room which we paid extra for but happened to be a small room. There is hardly any lighting in the room which makes it look dark and dingy. The walls of the room are disgusting (they need a major clean!)
We went down for dinner as we arrived quite late. We tried to explain that we were vegetarians but the waiter didn’t understand. Being the only 2 people dining, our order arrived after 45 minutes which is absolutely ridiculous considering there was no one else around. We ordered a second drink which took over 15minutes to come and upon finishing, there was no one seen to be around.
We had breakfast everyday and we ordered pretty much the same thing everyday and made it clear to the staff that we were vegetarians. I made an order and asked for no eggs and salmon on the rosti. They got the order wrong and I had to send it back and within 20 seconds the plate came back without eggs and salmon. They clearly just scrapped the excess off and handed it back to us. We also asked for granola and was given Belgium waffles. Again being the only two people at the restaurant how they got this wrong is appalling!
When it came to housekeeping, turn down service was basically them leaving evening treats and leaving. When we came back to our room, the bed was never made up or towels were never hung up.
Considering the ridiculous amount of money we paid, it is overpriced and so is the food which isn’t even that great.
There is also major construction work going on next to the hotel which would have been helpful if before booking there was something to tell us this was happening. It was so distracting and disturbing to be hear this early in the morning and throughout they day. What was supposed to be a relaxing and peaceful stay was completely the opposite.
This really ruined our stay of which was to be a relaxing few days before heading back home but instead was horrible. We considered going to stay at another hotel but given we weren’t here for long we made do.
I strongly advise against staying here as i wouldn’t even classify it as a hotel. It’s shabby, the customer service is appalling and it’s definitely not value for money!
We have spent 2 nights in a sea breeze suite. The hotel is located directly at the beach although we did not like the beach very much. There a quite some stones and greens in the water. But quite normal for the island.
We loved the design and the smell in this beautiful hotel. Everything was very clean and the staff was super friendly. Breakfast was directly facing the sea and incredibly good! The pool area is small but beautiful and clean. You can use 2 Kajaks for free. The room was huge and very comfortable. Since we were there in low season we could enter the room 3 hours before regular check in and leave it 2 hours after regular check out. Perfect service.
We took a motorbike taxi to fisherman for 100 THB and to Chaweng for 200 a regular taxi. The hotel taxi is more expensive.
