Beachfront boutique on Koh Samui’s northern shore with just 14 rooms decorated in French, Chinese and Thai styles

The Lowdown

On the northern coast of Koh Samui, the Scent Hotel is a boutique retreat on the shores of Bangrak Beach. It’s isolated enough to feel peaceful but is within easy reach of the island’s thumping nightclubs. The overall design theme is 1940s and ’50s colonial Southeast Asia, and the 14 rooms are individually decorated in French, Chinese, or Thai styles. Scent is a defining feature; the hotel is the brainchild of a Bangkok brand known for its aromatic products and guests can customize the fragrance in their rooms. Aromatherapy is a key influence in the spa, while the Le Jaroen Restaurant is as much about the visual (star-filled skies overhead) and aural (the sound of lapping waves) experience as it is about the French-Siamese fusion cuisine.

In the Area

The island of Koh Samui, or Samui as locals and regular visitors call it, has a history that spans more than 325 years. It was discovered by backpackers several decades ago, but since the 1990s it’s become a present-day sophisticated enclave of excellent spas, dining and nightlife. The Big Buddha Temple is its most famous landmark, and the 39-foot-high golden deity is visited by devout locals as well as tourists. The hotel can also arrange private long-tail boat tours to the Five Islands to see caves, beaches and bamboo houses perched on high limestone cliffs, on islands that were until recently completely inaccessible to foreigners.

Beautiful peaceful honeymoon stay
Reviewed 6 days ago

We had a wonderful stay at the The Scent for the final part of our honeymoon. The Scent is a beautiful hotel. We were welcomed straight away as we arrived at the hotel by the friendly reception staff and greeted with a delicious passion fruit welcome drink. The reception area was beautiful and clean, perfect AC as well! We were taken up to our room, the hotel staff had already taken our luggage up for us, our room was nice and cool, very clean and fresh! As it was our honeymoon they had decorated the bed with flowers and swan shaped towels.
Our room was 224 - great view, overlooking the pool and the beach can be seen in the distance.
Each nice they put a chocolate cookie on ours beds, really nice touch. The rooms had beautiful towels & and bathrobes as well. Lots of little details like complimentary water, shower gels, shampoos, bath salts etc.

The breakfast is great! Everyone gets tea or coffee including iced coffees / lattes etc and toast with croissants and then you can order from the menu, delicious, we tried a variety of breakfast options the few days we were there, all were so delicious and beautifully presented.

We were there for the Thai New Year and the hotel staff made us feel so welcome, we got free canapes and they did a special thai dance and water fight which is tradition for Thai New Year but also just so much fun.

The fishermans village is so close, just 5 minutes in a taxi, worth a visit!

Peace and quiet

Most amazing boutique hotel and the perfect place to stay at the end of our holidays in Thailand.

We arrived early and were able to check in right away. We were met in a very small but super cozy lobby by the nicest and most smiling receptionist who showed us to our room.
This is a small, very stylish and unique boutique hotel where the stylish decorated rooms are located around the pool. Are you looking for a romantic stay this is the place to stay in Koh Samui. The beach and the water is not very inviting, however being on the beach is almost like being on a private beach with a view to Big Buddha and Koh Phangan.
A great thanks to the very professional, nice and smiling reception staff and the great management. We strongly recommend this hotel!

Super laid back place to chill out at the beach

The rooms have such character, but you don’t spend much time in the room. Only there to sleep really, and the beds are super comfortable and the hotel is quiet, as it fronts directly on to the beach. You can spend your days going for massages on the beach, at the beach or for a few pounds you can catch a taxi up to the Fishermans’ Village where you can shop and eat. Very relaxing way to spend a week.

Looks lovely but....

Hotel looks lovely however I can only give 1 star as our toilet didn't work. We ended up having to use the communal ones by the pool! For £120 a night in Thailand I expect luxury unfortunately this is not it. I told staff 3 times about the toilet but was never fixed (given ludicrous advice on how to flush a loo instead)
The bath also just emptied onto the floor making everything wet. The toilet is also by the bath so don't expect any privacy (if it works).
I would have been so annoyed if I stayed here on my honeymoon!
Perhaps our experience may have been different in another room but if you do stay here if you get the 'little indochine' room which is the first one you come to after reception ASK TO MOVE or stay somewhere else. This room was also the only one with no outdoor seating so you would have to sit outside other peoples rooms. Wouldn't stay again, can get such nicer hotels for half the price.

No privacy and bad noise pollution

We chose this hotel because the design of the hotel looked nice in photos but once we arrived we knew we made the a wrong decision. The hotel was very small and the layout was not good. All the rooms face the central swimming pool so everyone at the pool and restaurant can see right through your room. If you close the curtain you have no sunlight because that’s the only window you have. The rooms are also next to the main road and you hear every single car that pass by, my boyfriend couldn’t sleep. Also, The hotel just feels very uptight. The first page of the guide in the room explains how much things are cost if you break them.
On top of this, the shower pressure was light, the toilet didn’t flush well, there was no tissue in the tissue box, the AC grill is full of dust.
However the staffs are very nice. The service is good and they try to help you but the problem Can’t really be solved.
