How to Get There
Stayed here on part of a tour of Honshu. It's in the railway station complex but there is very little noise from the trains. The area in the station has numerous cafes and there is a food court just outside. As we were traveling on the Shinkansen on the holiday it was very useful as a base. The hotel was very modern, clean and well run. There is also a theatre in the complex and an amazing light display on the stairs at the other end of the station which constantly changes
Just departed from Hotel Granvia after spending four nights there. Fantastic location above the station which was very convenient after arriving from Tokyo via the Shrikansen, 5 minutes from platform to reception. Also convenient as located by the bus terminus. Superb view of the Kyoto Tower. Getting around really easy. Easy, efficient check in and out. Really good customer service from reception, porters, housekeeping and restaurant staff. Good choices for breakfast. Lots of options to eat in the hotel and the local area. An unusual hotel in terms of architecture, but no complaints whatsoever. Would definitely return to the Granvia if in Kyoto in the future.
Since we booked this hotel partly because we like to have a swim after touring the sights all day it was very disappointing that I could not bring my 8 yr old son in the pool in the afternoon. Kids are only allowed in the pool 7-9 AM! I guess this also says a bit about what clientele the hotel caters to.
Other than that the hotel is very nice. The rooms are big although our room was a bit dated and in need of refurbishment. The location in the Kyoto Station is perfect with only a 5 mins walk from the Shinkansen track when you arrive/leave. Also all kind of local trains available from the station and buses and taxis from just in front of the station.
The hotel has 3 restaurants from which you can choose to have breakfast. We mostly had the western/asian buffet which was good. Also tried the Japanese restaurant once for a traditional meal, but without coffee available we only tried it once :). The service is good and the concierge was very helpful when my wife asked where she could buy a specific product.
A great base for being a tourist in Kyoto, more convenient than previous visits. Staying here took all the hassle out of getting around, being right by the ticket office and turnstiles into the station (up escalators to the right as you head out the central ticket gate). It's a comfortable chain/business style hotel.
As a tourist, it provided the perfect base to visit Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and various other temples by using local trains, all of which was really simple to do. There's an English speaking information desk to the right of the station turnstiles as you face them, they were always really helpful to make sure we got the right platforms. If you don't fancy using trains, there was always a big queue of taxis outside the entrance, and getting back by taxi was easy as everyone knows the station.
The room was a good size, bed was comfortable and everything was clean. We thought prices for food were a little high and the post midnight menu limited (we arrived late at night), but overall we were comfortable here. The concierge was very helpful to recommend and book restaurants for us (including an excellent Yakiniku place 2 blocks away down the road directly opposite the station).
Breakfast was good without being fantastic. More than adequate and very efficient, but without it being a gourmet treat.
The concierge also directed us to the Ramen floor (10th) of the shopping mall in the station. The lifts are a pain, but you can get there really easily by using the outdoor escalators directly opposite from where you come down to the station from the hotel. They go all the way up to the 10th floor. Pretty good value food.
Very nice hotel in a central location in Kyoto - close to everything. The rooms are very quiet, even though i was facing the station itself. Very nice breakfast option at the hotel. the rooms are very clean as well.
