Overview

The Review

In contrast to larger-than-life Kingston, the Spanish Court Hotel is an oasis of calm behind high walls. After I made the two-and-a-half-hour drive from the northern port city of Falmouth along Jamaica’s, shall we say, exciting interior roads (sample sign: “Undertakers love careless overtakers”), the friendly staff and waiting glass of champagne at check-in were very welcome.

Formerly a shopping center, the hotel opened in 2009 at the crossroads of the city’s commercial district and the cultural attractions in New Kingston. The crowd is predominantly of the laptop-wielding, deal-making variety, but families and visitors en route to Montego Bay or Ocho Rios also snag some city time here.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2521/prop-97350-1330710600-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”In the colorful lobby, Jamaican-made furniture combines with statement light fixtures.”}

The 109 guestrooms have a decidedly masculine look, with block colors, modern marble bathrooms and the requisite flat-screen TV and iPod dock. But you also get a sense of the city in the fiery red bedding, Jamaican-made furniture and photography by local artists. This successful mix of Caribbean design and contemporary style is seen again in the restaurant, which combines a straw and resin bar with white leather chairs, and in the entry hall, where dark wood floors are flanked by colonial-style shutters and there are Italian Flos Zeppelin chandeliers hanging overhead.

Meals at the Gallery Café continue this theme, with modern takes on traditional dishes, like braised oxtail, curried chicken and coconut shrimp, all served by an attentive staff. If you’re not heading out to experience Kingston’s famous nightlife, retire to the Sky Terrace (part of the spa by day) for a Red Stripe beside the lap pool and live music under the stars.

The next morning I met my driver, Jason, for the short ride to the airport. A living, breathing homage to Michael Jackson, he broke into falsetto song as we exited the hotel gates, just as the noise and buzz of Kingston resumed.

Very pleasant business stay at the Spanish Court in Kingston
Reviewed 1 day ago

I recently stayed at the Spanish Court Hotel for 3 nights on a business trip and was very impressed with the property and service. Check-in was smooth, welcoming and efficient, and we were given welcome cocktails and gifts. My room was on the front of the building on the third floor and while I was concerned about street noise, it was actually quite quiet (and I'm a very light sleeper). The room was well appointed with a safe, fridge and standard amenities, as well as a yoga mat (first time I've seen that but wouldn't use unless they also provided a disinfectant spray). Lots of lights and a decent amount of outlets. The bed was comfortable as well.I would have liked a robe and it's unfortunate that the hotel has not enabled the smart aspect of the smart TVs.

Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was quite good with lots of choices. Hot dishes included a daily porridge, 2 Jamaican options plus scrambled eggs, bacon and waffles or pancakes. There is also an omelet bar. Cold items include cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries. I requested plain yogurt and received it without any problem.

We had dinner once in the hotel. I was a little disappointed that there aren't many Jamaican dishes on the menu. A few of us ordered the oxtail but there was only one serving left, which I got. It was very good.

I worked quite a bit from the deck of the Cabana pool. WiFi coverage was good and there are outlets around the walls. Bar service there was a bit hit and miss, meaning not always staffed. The pool has a unique layout with benches set into the sides and day beds around the edges. The poolside toilets could be better signed as it is very hard to spot, especially if there are no staff around for directions.

We attended the manager's wine and cheese reception which was quite casual but nicely done. It's a good opportunity to chat with management about the hotel and your stay. Make sure you enter the draw as I won a spa gift certificate!

Service at the front desk was excellent throughout my stay. I requested help a couple of time and they were always friendly, professional and efficient. As a former hotelier, I'd give this team full marks.

I also visited the hotel's conference space which is located off-site but just next door. It was well laid-out and the service during my tour was excellent.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend it.

Celebrating the purchase of my husband new vehicle
Reviewed 2 days ago

So my husband was having some real challenges with the purchase of this vehicle. Rise and fall of the US$, the unexpected loan fees etc. So in order to celebrate and take his mind off all if those obstacles I took him The Spanish Court Hotel for dinner as I have been there several times before for business meetings and lunches. The ambiance and the food is excellent and the service is fantastic. He was quite impressed!

We stayed here for two nights at the end of our trip and it was brilliant. Lovely clean large rooms and bathrooms. Good size pool area give its in Kingston/a city plus the bar pool area which was equally as nice and less busy (not that the main pool was packed by any means). Friendly bar staff and helpful and informative staff on reception. Breakfast was delicious with a huge selection on offer and egg station. Wonderful stay and would highly recommend.

Classy Hotel with Good Staff

Stayed here for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Check in was quick and efficient, the hotel was spotlessly clean. The rooms were large and well appointed. The wifi was fast and there was a strong signal throughout the property. There is a pool and Sky Bar on level 2 where they serve excellent cocktails and the staff there are incredibly friendly. There was live music when I was there over the weekend. Breakfast was good. Perhaps there might have been a little more selection, but I did not ask, I just took what was on the buffet. My car battery was flat on the morning I was due to go to the airport. One of the maintenance staff helped me get it started within minutes. Excellent service. Well done! Highly recommended. I will be back.
