The Review

In contrast to larger-than-life Kingston, the Spanish Court Hotel is an oasis of calm behind high walls. After I made the two-and-a-half-hour drive from the northern port city of Falmouth along Jamaica’s, shall we say, exciting interior roads (sample sign: “Undertakers love careless overtakers”), the friendly staff and waiting glass of champagne at check-in were very welcome.

Formerly a shopping center, the hotel opened in 2009 at the crossroads of the city’s commercial district and the cultural attractions in New Kingston. The crowd is predominantly of the laptop-wielding, deal-making variety, but families and visitors en route to Montego Bay or Ocho Rios also snag some city time here.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2521/prop-97350-1330710600-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”In the colorful lobby, Jamaican-made furniture combines with statement light fixtures.”}

The 109 guestrooms have a decidedly masculine look, with block colors, modern marble bathrooms and the requisite flat-screen TV and iPod dock. But you also get a sense of the city in the fiery red bedding, Jamaican-made furniture and photography by local artists. This successful mix of Caribbean design and contemporary style is seen again in the restaurant, which combines a straw and resin bar with white leather chairs, and in the entry hall, where dark wood floors are flanked by colonial-style shutters and there are Italian Flos Zeppelin chandeliers hanging overhead.

Meals at the Gallery Café continue this theme, with modern takes on traditional dishes, like braised oxtail, curried chicken and coconut shrimp, all served by an attentive staff. If you’re not heading out to experience Kingston’s famous nightlife, retire to the Sky Terrace (part of the spa by day) for a Red Stripe beside the lap pool and live music under the stars.

The next morning I met my driver, Jason, for the short ride to the airport. A living, breathing homage to Michael Jackson, he broke into falsetto song as we exited the hotel gates, just as the noise and buzz of Kingston resumed.

I enjoyed my 4 nights at the Spanish Court hotel. Mr. Joseph Purrin and his staff provided exceptional service. They are kind, conscientious, very attentive and accommodating!
There was always a good selection for breakfast, which was always delicious. I will definitely stay at Spanish Court the next time I visit Jamaica.

Central Location in New Kingston, Spacious Rooms, Sufficient Amenities, Great Breakfast!

Overall, I am very satisfied w/ the experience, this is a solid 4-star property, and I am happy w/ the service I received. The room was spacious and clean, the King size bed was comfortable, and I had all the amenities I needed to make the stay enjoyable.

The location is very central in New Kingston and close to a lot of attractions in the area. This is somewhat like the financial district of the City so it is eerily quiet on the weekends, but I found the surroundings to be safe. There is also a really big supermarket right across the street so that was a major convenience.

I didn't use the pool or gym, but they looked sufficient. I only ate the buffet breakfast that was included w/ the room and I would also rate that 4 stars. It was good, food was fresh, and there were a good assortment of items to choose from.

I would return to this Hotel if I need to stay in Kingston ever again, but more likely if I were in the area for business. I wouldn't really consider this Hotel, and its location, for a family vacation or leisure trip, as it came across as more of a Hotel for discerning business travelers.

Checkin- smooth and efficient even though we were an hour early

Room clean and spacious

Great A/C

Breakfast delicious everyday and great restaurant service

Room service was incredibly slow though- hot water/Ice/Food/plates and cutlery all took 30 mins on average to be delivered.....

Gym, limited equipment in the gym. With a little investment this could be improved dramatically.

Downstairs pool
Small but sufficient and very clean

The hotel called us several taxis during our stay, which were all efficient. Ensure you ask them to check with the Juta company how much it will be beforehand. There were a few occasions where we didn’t and the driver tried to charge us 2/3X the price.

This is my 3rd stay at SCH, the last time was 5 years ago. The hotel hasn’t dated much and the standards are still the same which is a relief.

SCH is my first port of call in Kingston and will definitely be back.

We decided to have lunch at Spanish Court Restaurant a few weeks ago, while on a business trip to Kingston. It was one of the best decisions , the ambiance was what we needed to relax and to take a break before taking our long trek back to Montego Bay. The meal ( grilled salmon) was ABSOLUTELY delicious , not to mention the attentive service we received from the staff. Thank you so much for pampering us, it was just what we needed.
