Minimalist resort dotted with cube-shaped villas with private pools in off-the-grid Khao Lak
A vision in stone, concrete and glass, this minimalist design hotel stands out for its stark, angular and — unique in southern Thailand — postmodern Brutalist look. Aesthetics are paramount here, and every facet of the design serves not only to look sexy but to maximize the stunning ocean views. Glass-fronted cubic villas come with private plunge pools and polished wood verandas overlooking the Andaman Sea, creating a wonderful water symmetry.
Bed and Bath
The sharp angles and contemporary design continue in the 36 cube-shaped beachfront villas, which have floor-to-ceiling glass walls that offer stunning sea views. Despite the sharp lines, bedrooms are surprisingly comfortable, with plush mattresses dressed in clean white linens and piled high with plenty of pillows. Bathrooms have deep stone soaking tubs, ceramic sinks and dispensers full of botanical products.
The strip of golden sand is narrow here, but it is also mostly deserted — a welcome contrast to crowd-packed Phuket, a 90-minute drive to the south. The quality of the water is the same, however: clear, warm and calm, and Casa de La Flora has done an excellent job of blending into the natural environs – wood loungers are built right into the tasteful stone wall separating units from the sea. The house restaurant, La Aranya, serves a mixture of Thai and Western dishes in a chic lounge setting. The on-site spa offers a tantalizing lineup of traditional treatments and Thai massages.
