Luxe tented safari camp on the banks of the Mara River, with daily game drives into the Maasai Mara
On the edge of the Maasai Mara, the Fairmont Mara Safari Club is an impressive 100-acre retreat with 50 luxe tents overlooking the Mara River. But this is no backyard campout. Each tent features a four poster pillowtop bed, handwoven rugs and a veranda looking out on the river — where you might just spy a hippo or a crocodile. And don’t worry about your morning beauty routine: The tents have full en suite bathrooms, some with outdoor showers. After the daily game drive, guests can relax at the swimming pool — which features a pool bar, barbecue pit and private massage tents — or sip a cocktail on the spacious deck, which is cantilevered over the river. The dining room serves European, Asian and African dishes, complemented by fresh Kenyan produce. After dark, cultural and educational activities include Maasai dancing or a discussion on the Mara’s ecosystem.
In the Area
This Fairmont isn’t called Safari Club for nothing. Trained guides lead game drives (from two-hour trips to full-day excursions) deep into the Mara Plains, where you’ll find lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, giraffes and other majestic creatures. Bird walks and walking safaris — accompanied by an armed guard and two Maasai warriors in traditional regalia to scare off the lions — are also on offer. For more adventurous types the Fairmont offers a balloon safari (including breakfast served with sparkling wine) and a half-day fishing trip to Lake Victoria.
