Romantic New England escape with a community vibe, a spa, yoga center and organic chef’s garden
A five-hour drive by car from New York, quiet Kennebunkport combines a gorgeous coastline, an open beach and preppy style. A short drive along the winding coastline, Hidden Pond is a romantic, upscale resort with 36 bungalows and cottages spread across 60 sprawling acres. There’s a magical, village-like vibe from the spa with treehouse-style treatment rooms to the farm-to-fork restaurant, Earth, helmed by James Beard Award–winning chef Ken Oringer.
Bed and Bath
The 36 private cottages and bungalows are all individually designed: Silent Pine for a “splash of retro woodsiness”; Periwinkle, where “Maine woods meets vibrant Caribbean”; and more. Bungalows are a spacious 600 square feet, with private porches (furnished with Maine-essential rocking chairs), gas fireplaces, wet bars and private outdoor showers, while Two-Bedroom Cottages feel like private vacation homes thanks to cozy living rooms, full kitchens, floor-to-ceiling windows and stone fireplaces.
Echoing Hidden Pond’s romantic, back-to-nature setting, onsite Earth restaurant serves seasonal, local fare by famed Boston chef Ken Oringer. Choose from house-made charcuterie, dock-fresh seafood dishes, wood oven fired pizzas and more, all served in a rustic dining room overlooking the pond and organic gardens. The alfresco Farm Bar also hosts live music nights throughout the summer months. For a different sort of indulgence, the three-room spa has a unique position in a series of treehouses above the gardens and uses all natural ingredients (including some grown onsite) in its pampering facial, wrap and massage treatment menu.
In the Area
Head out on a deep sea fishing trip with Striker Charters and see what you can reel in. Taste craft brews, chowder, crab cakes, artisanal cheeses, Maine-made condiments and other local flavors. Experience a classic slice of New England during a hands-on 90-minute lobstering cruise aboard the Rugosa, which departs from the Nonantum’s dock. For a dose of culture, few museums have as stunning a location — or view — as the oceanfront Ogunquit Museum of Art, which houses a distinguished permanent collection of American art, including works by Marsden Hartley, Rockwell Kent and Thomas Hart Benton.
