Stylish inn a stroll from Kennebunkport, with two acres of gardens, Greek Revival accents and an escapist vibe
With its smart robin’s egg–blue wood paneling and artfully clipped hedges, this 19th-century farmhouse seduces you before you even reach the front door. The look is the handiwork of husband-and-wife team Eric and Liz Brodar, who coaxed the place into the 21st century over a five-month renovation in 2011. They’ve thought of everything: iPod docks, plush bathrobes, light-flooded public areas that feel like a private home thanks to piles of coffee table books and a roaring fire. Guestrooms feel wonderfully private, with comfy Queen or King beds dressed with Frette linens, potbelly fires (in Suites) and views of the manicured gardens. The hearty, creative three-course breakfast includes salmon eggs benedict with lemon arugula sauce, orange-cardamom French toast, sweet apple crumble and more. The big communal table encourages morning chatter, or you can opt to dine at your own private table.
In the Area
You’re on one of Maine’s most picturesque slices of coast (which is why President Bush senior has his summer house here), so you’re spoiled for diversions. Depending on the season, go whale-watching, eat some fresh lobster, hunt for shells on pristine stretches of sand, or just take the 10-minute walk into lovely Kennebunkport for boutiques, eye-opening galleries and impressive eateries, including laid-back Old Vines Wine Bar. No matter what the season, you can walk, snowshoe and even cross-country-ski Kennebunk’s stunning beaches. Three-mile Goose Rocks Beach is particularly scenic.
