Exclusive 390-acre private island escape with its own beach and spa overlooking the sea
A lush tropical island (almost) all to yourself? Rebak Island, an easy 7-minute boat ride from Langkawi Island, is a verdant 390-acre playground with a private marina and only one place to stay: the Vivanta by Taj Rebak Island. Here, it's all about unwinding, and the facilities are geared toward relaxation, with a day spa, a pool with a swim-up bar, and all the water sports you could hope for, in crystal-clear tropical waters teeming with marine life. The spacious timbered rooms (with either garden or sea views) are kitted out with local artifacts, traditional Malay crafts and plenty of wood furnishings. The bathrooms are a decent size and feature a separate rain shower (some outdoors) and a tub. Dine on Malay, Indian and continental cuisine at Senari, the resort's all-day dining room, or head to the beach to tuck into fresh seafood at Strait's Grill. Follow up with a happy hour drink at the Lepak Bar, or sip a poolside cocktail at Celsius Pool Bar. Mood Deck, Boardwalk, SY69 and Minum Minum round out the bar options. An in-house naturalist leads guided walks through the ancient forest and the resort offers a number of signature activities including a market tour followed by a cookery class, lessons in Malaysian art and a cruise along the nearby mangroves.
In the Area
On Rebak Island itself there's biking, swimming and other easygoing leisure activities, but it's worth exploring Langkawi Island to get a better sense of the region known as "the Jewel of Kedah" or some of the other 99 islands in this famously beautiful region. Plenty of cruises and tours operate, so ask the hotel to recommend and book one. It's also worth looking into getting PADI accreditation, if diving appeals. Beach bums should check out the popular Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah and Pantai Kok beaches.
