How to Get There
We had reservations for November of 2018. However due to the horrible rain damage sustained in the area in April of 2018 the resort is not taking gas at this time. They plan to resume taking guess in April of 2019.
The hotel staff has refunded our deposit and we're very easy to work with. Perhaps we can stay there sometime in the future.
One of the best location I ever stayed at. Stayed in one of the premium ocean front units in April.
Initially was a little concerned/skeptical as we were walking to the unit through the wooden stairs/corridors but all of those vanished as soon as I opened the door to the unit. Unreal views and the most relaxing stay I had in a looong time. No TV or AC- but still very comfortable -wind from the ocean and calming ocean sounds.
We were at HCR in March 2018 and could not have been happier! We booked a premium ocean front room (2G) and were blown away by the view and proximity to the ocean. We literally woke up every morning to the roar of the ocean and turtle doves on our lanai (and on one morning we had a surprise visit from Leo one of the three cats on the property)!
The property is located about 5 minutes away by car from the town of Hanalei and we were so glad they provide a shuttle from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm to and from town. As previously noted although it is a short drive you do go over 3 one way bridges and the road itself is narrow with lots of twists and turns (since we were there the property is closed until May 31 due to the roads being inaccessible because of mudslides from the recent rain storms). Tyler was a FANTASTIC driver and offered all sorts of fun facts about the town and property that made our stay even more special. He also ended up driving us to the airport on his day off and charged us a much better rate than SpeediShuttle!
The room was more than expected with an updated kitchen and bathroom and as previously stated...spectacular views (ocean on three sides and then green mountains! You could stay at the Four Seasons across the bay and pay 2x as much without nearly the same access to the beach (they look at us and we look at them).
Now what you DON"T get at HCR is service which is one of the things you are paying for at Four Seasons. When you arrive at HCR you will need to take your luggage to your room in a wheeled cart...there is not an elevator so if you are on the second floor I imagine they could have someone help you but there was not anyone readily available when we checked in. It was also odd that when we arrived at 1:00 pm our room was not available but we needed to be back by 5:00 pm in order to check in because the one representative was leaving at that time. There isn't anything wrong with that....this is a boutique property but you just want to understand what to expect. Rooms are cleaned every third day but you can pay an extra fee and have them come every day. There is a laundry room where you can go to get fresh towels each day. If you think of this as an eco lodge in a fantastic location with spectacular views you won't be disappointed.
There is a new restaurant on the property that we did not try as well as a spa...will visit both on our next visit.
The beach was virtually deserted while we were there but there is a lot of coral in the water so swimming is tough. Tunnels beach is virtually within walking distance along the beach but Tyler drove us to a secret entrance!
We love the town of Hanalei...I feel if we stayed for a couple of weeks we would feel like locals! The town shuns the privileged sense of entitlement that seems to gravitate towards Princeville...the vibe here is casual and low key (coming from NYC it is exactly what we wanted).
We are already thinking of when we can come back...upon checkout the agent did say as a returning guest you can request a specific room and we inquired on dates that our unit would be available.
HCR is such a special place and absolutely perfect if you just want to "get off the grid" while on vacation!
We stayed in a premium beachfront condo prior to our wedding and it was just perfect. We could watch the sunrise from the beach right outside our room and there would be nobody else around, it was so peaceful. Some of the resorts are quite busy so to have an entire beach to ourselves for hours in the morning was a blessing. The rooms are basic but very clean. For us the main attraction of this resort was the amazing view and the feeling of remoteness. There aren't many shops nearby and the beach is quite isolated which for us was perfect but if you want something more lively you should stay elsewhere.
It would be good if they have had A/C as it does get quite warm but they have fans in all the rooms which helps. It would also be nice if free bottles of water were provided. Before our arrival we had emailed several times to see if we could organise a group discount so that our whole wedding party could book but we did not receive a response. Some of the members of our party also emailed and did not receive any response so if you need to contact them probably best by phone.
Hanalei Colony Resort is a beautiful, restful property, away from the crowds of other beach resorts. It is actually past Hanalei Village on the way to the Na Pali Coast, on a narrow road that crosses many one-lane bridges. As a result, there are no crowds, the beach is pristine, and overall vibe is quiet and relaxation. The property is beautifully landscaped, the suites are spacious, with very comfortable king-size beds, and the pool and hot tub area is wonderful. Opakapaka, the on-site restaurant, is very good, particularly for local fish. The resort has a courtesy van with very accommodating drivers that will take you to Hanalei village or as far away as Princeville. The staff was welcoming, informative, and kind. And the resort cats, particularly Leo, made us feel at home. It is also a great place for bird-watching, with numerous red-crested cardinals and mynah birds. We hope to return in a more sunny season.
