Family-friendly boutique surf lodge with two championship golf courses on Oahu's famed North Shore
Perched on a point that juts into the sea, Turtle Bay resort is decked out in ’70s-era design, but not to the point of being obtrusive. Here, it's all about the ocean: anywhere there isn't floor-to-ceiling glass facing the sea, photographs of wave details abound. The guest rooms are comfortable, with the standard rooms clocking in at 478 square feet. Muted earth tones allow the exterior surroundings to shine; patterns on bedspreads, pillows, and wall art meld traditional Hawaiian prints with tasteful kitsch. Many rooms have private balconies, complete with sliding shutters to shut the light out if need be, while bathrooms offer oversize natural stone-tiled showers and bath amenities from Luana, the hotel spa. The Beach Cottages are a favorite, with koa wood flooring and four-poster canopy beds that give way to your own sliver of paradise: a private lanai and an oceanside hammock. It's always a good sign when staycationing locals are mixed among the hotel guests. North Shore regulars saddle up to the alfresco poolside bar for mai tais and views of surfers dropping in at the point, then move into Surfer, the Bar after the sun goes down. North Shore Kula Grill serves up excellent farm-to-table fare, while Ola on the beach offers a delectable take on nouvelle Hawaiian regional cuisine. Roll to the golf clubhouse for Lei Lei's Bar & Grill, which always draws a lively crowd.
In the Area
After you've exhausted the many resort offerings — including horseback trail rides, golf and surf lessons — there are a few options outside the gates. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a few miles down the road (a must if kids are in tow); activity-packed Kualoa Ranch is a little farther down the line. Haleiwa is the only town on the North Shore, with its blend of surf shops, eateries and "local style" (read: humble) art galleries. On a hot day, don't skip the shave ice at Matsumoto's.
