South of Zihuatanejo, eight-casita Playa Viva is a beachfront eco-escape to get completely off the grid
Part luxury eco-hotel and part nature preserve spanning 200 acres on a milelong white sand beach, Playa Viva's grounds encompass an Aztec archaeological site, a volunteer-run turtle sanctuary, a mangrove forest and an estuary where saltwater and freshwater ecosystems converge. By the time you arrive, you’ll feel as if you’ve left civilization far behind — and that’s exactly the point.
Bed & Bath
The accommodations are basic but exotic in a stranded-island-chic kinda way. There are just eight rooms in five treehouse-like casitas, constructed of bamboo and palm fronds, with canopy beds, handcrafted furniture, private bathrooms and ocean views. Be prepared to embrace lo-fi living: there’s no air conditioning, TV, minibar and very sporadic cell phone reception.
The main building is open-air and open-plan, encouraging interaction between guests and staff. The communal kitchen produces three meals a day (plus snacks), which are served family-style on shared tables. The food is delicious — especially the homemade tortillas — with lots of fresh fruit, locally caught fish and organic produce grown on-site. Also communal are the living area, yoga pavilion, saltwater pool and soaking tub, all of which overlook the white sand beach.
Flights are available to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) from major U.S. cities on a variety of carriers. Transfers to/from Ixtapa Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) are included in the rate for reservations of at least three nights; and for reservations for less than three nights, can be arranged by the property for an additional charge.
