Those who’ve experienced the Jersey Shore know it as a stretch of sandy Atlantic coast that’s often a quiet and wholesome retreat from the party-loving Jersey Shore depicted on TV. At Icona Golden Inn, this is especially true, because the effortlessly elegant getaway occupies an entire block by the seaside, in an inviting neighborhood of other laid-back hotels and resorts. The former Golden Inn – Avalon’s largest beachfront hotel – has been around for half a century and offers a warm, inviting vibe and charming Nantucket-inspired architecture.
Since recently reopening the property, Icona – already celebrated for its Cape May hotels, both of which are TripAdvisor favorites – has added a charming bistro and a forthcoming brewpub. Also find a seasonal pool, complete with daybeds, and yoga on the sands of Avalon Beach. When you’re not staying busy at the hotel, you’ll find plenty to do in the surrounding area, with everything from golfing to deep-sea fishing. And when the sun goes down, explore the charming bars and restaurants of the area, before returning to your luxe retreat.

In the East Wing, you’ll find both the East Northside Queen studio – with two queen beds – and the East Poolside King studio – with a California king bed and a full sleeper sofa; both of the East Wing accommodation offer an ocean view from their balcony.

Avalon is one of the Jersey Shore’s quieter towns, just a short drive from Cape May and Stone Harbor in South Jersey. The main attraction here isn’t a buzzy nightclub scene – though you can find some of those up the coast – but the pretty Atlantic ocean and beaches, plus historic architecture. (Head to Cape May to see an especially lovely assortment of pastel-colored Victorians.) Of course, if you do want to experience some after-hours entertainment, there’s nightly live music in summertime. Younger guests may also attend summer arts-and-crafts, sports, face-painting and Bingo events.
How to Get There
We love coming to the ICONA Avalon. The rooms are clean and spacious. The experience is always positive. The front desk staff goes out of their way to make sure the can accommodate your needs. It was our anniversary trip and they did their best to make us feel special. However, our number one reason for always returning to the ICONA is the wait staff especially the Bartenders. They are the best on the jersey shore. Sue is hands down the most attentive and welcoming. She always has a smile and even makes you truly feel like you are on a resort. Also thank you to Timothy and Brian two other amazing bartender. We had a great stay!
My husband and I got married 8/8/19 at Icona Avalon. We had our ceremony on the beach and reception in the sea glass ballroom. It was been one week since our wedding and we are still blown away by how perfect it was! Alyssa and Ashley have been AMAZING and extremely helpful since day 1 when we booked our wedding. They answered all of my emails and provided us with so many options and choices. The entire staff at Icona, from the valet to the front desk, and the bartenders were incredibly friendly and helpful! You can really tell that the employees take pride in this establishment. Our friends and families could not stop complimenting how beautiful Icona was and how professional the staff were! Did I mention the food? WOW it was delicious and our guests were raving about how awesome their meals were! We loved every aspect of Icona and would recommend this venue to anyone, you will not be disappointed in the slightest!!
We just got back from a 3-night stay at Icona Avalon and had a very nice time. We had a partial ocean view king suite with a balcony. The room itself was attractive and spacious. The kitchenette was terrific. My one real room design complaint was the lighting: there was only one lamp for the entire space and it had an unattractive (and unhealthy) bluish light. Very unromantic.
We stayed at the resort during a weekend in mid-August and all of the adjacent suites were populated with families with kids. There were kids screaming and running down the halls at all hours. The kids in the adjoining suite kept trying to get through the door that linked the suites. We travel a lot and I've never experienced anything like this. I assume that because all the king suites are in a row and families like the suites, it created this situation. Tough for couples looking for a romantic getaway.
The pool, as others have noted, was very cold—too cold for many of the kids. So, despite a sign indicating that no one under the age of 18 was allowed in the jacuzzi, there were kids packing it at all hours. There was never a time during our stay when the jacuzzi wasn't packed with kids roughhousing and jostling and shrieking. Again, not the best for adults wanting to get closer to their significant other.
But, all in all, it's a very nice place to stay when you want a quick getaway to the shore.
