Overview

A newly reopened, laid-back retreat on a peaceful stretch of the Jersey Shore, with room for up to four

The Lowdown

Those who’ve experienced the Jersey Shore know it as a stretch of sandy Atlantic coast that’s often a quiet and wholesome retreat from the party-loving Jersey Shore depicted on TV. At Icona Golden Inn, this is especially true, because the effortlessly elegant getaway occupies an entire block by the seaside, in an inviting neighborhood of other laid-back hotels and resorts. The former Golden Inn – Avalon’s largest beachfront hotel – has been around for half a century and offers a warm, inviting vibe and charming Nantucket-inspired architecture.
Since recently reopening the property, Icona – already celebrated for its Cape May hotels, both of which are TripAdvisor favorites – has added a charming bistro and a forthcoming brewpub. Also find a seasonal pool, complete with daybeds, and yoga on the sands of Avalon Beach. When you’re not staying busy at the hotel, you’ll find plenty to do in the surrounding area, with everything from golfing to deep-sea fishing. And when the sun goes down, explore the charming bars and restaurants of the area, before returning to your luxe retreat.
Good to know
Please note that a resort fee of 7% per room, per night will be added on the payment screen. The resort fee includes Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, off-street parking and 24-hour front-desk service.

Studios

Accommodations are set in different wings, but standard among them are a balcony, Keurig coffeemaker, organic bath amenities and a galley kitchen, including a cook top, microwave, compact refrigerator, cookware and dishes. Décor gives a nod to another beloved beach resort: Massachusetts’ Nantucket, up the Atlantic Coast. Over in the West Wing, the West King studio provides one California king bed and a full sleeper sofa. In the East Wing, you’ll find both the East Northside Queen studio – with two queen beds – and the East Poolside King studio – with a California king bed and a full sleeper sofa; both of the East Wing accommodation offer an ocean view from their balcony.

Dining

The hotel’s latest addition is the brand-new Shimmers Bistro, offering Starbucks coffee and pastries in the morning, plus local and seasonal lunches and dinners in afternoon and evening. An indoor-outdoor brewpub will be opening this year.

Location

Avalon is one of the Jersey Shore’s quieter towns, just a short drive from Cape May and Stone Harbor in South Jersey. The main attraction here isn’t a buzzy nightclub scene – though you can find some of those up the coast – but the pretty Atlantic ocean and beaches, plus historic architecture. (Head to Cape May to see an especially lovely assortment of pastel-colored Victorians.) Of course, if you do want to experience some after-hours entertainment, there’s nightly live music in summertime. Younger guests may also attend summer arts-and-crafts, sports, face-painting and Bingo events.

Excellent experience

I recently stayed here during Thanksgiving with my family. The booking process was great and the rooms were immaculate. The hotel offered a formal buffet for Thanksgiving dinner in which Hope, the event planner, quickly set up a dinner for 25 of us (the food was amazing too). I would definitely considering coming back for this event again and will be back in the summer!

Food and bar excellent!

Stayed at the Icona for Thanksgiving and ate almost every meal at the Avalon Brew Pub. The food was outstanding every time. I recommend the fish tacos appetizer. We ate at the bar one evening and Iris, the bartender, treated us like royalty. You can't go wrong at the Brew Pub, either at a table or sitting at the bar.

Great service in the off season

We spent a 2 night mid week get away at the Icona. Despite being the slow season the staff was attentive both at the hotel and the Brew Pub were we stopped for a beverage or 2. We have stayed here before but usually in June and September when they are busy. Happy to see they still keep thing up to standards when it is the slow time.

We had a wonderful stay at Icona Avalon. Our room was spacious and clean with plenty of towels. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Our friends were on the third floor and had a beautiful ocean view!
