Overview

The Review

Jakarta buzzes around the clock, but this modernist block in the midst of the city’s kaleidoscopic melee provides a calming refuge. Guests enter the soaring, Asian art–filled marble lobby — which creates an immediate contrast with the frenetic city outside — while upstairs, contemporary furnishings and polished wood are paired with cloudlike beds and bathrooms with bathtubs built for two.

Set in old Batavia, Jakarta’s charming Dutch colonial quarter, the hotel is well situated for exploring sights like the National Museum and the Presidential Palace, though the clientele skews heavily toward business travelers who appreciate the proximity to the commercial district.

The closets made me wish I’d packed more heavily — or done some more shopping — and I found the soothing hues a welcome break from the city’s assault of color, which is visible out the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The hotel’s restaurants are worth visiting; hit the TNC café for addictive chocolate cakes and fresh fruit smoothies, and Buzz restaurant for authentic satays and rice dishes — though adventurous eaters should explore the street stalls just outside the hotel for some of Jakarta’s tastiest, and cheapest, eats. Work off the calories at the well-equipped gym, and don’t miss the sixth-floor swimming pool, which offers jaw-dropping city panoramas. By day the latter is a calm haven; at night the decibel level can rise significantly.

The Alila brand got its start in Bali, so the zen spa feels like an island oasis — and I never leave without purchasing a few favorite Alila spa products, like the avocado hair smoothie. Every treatment on the well-edited spa menu is exceptional, but book the Balinese massage for some deep, jetlag-erasing kneading.

Friendly, home away from home

After long research, going back and forth comparing between hotel options, Alila was the obvious winner.. Why?

1) Good location - central, good food around the hotel
2) Value for money - it’s rather difficult to find 4-star hotels as classy as Alila at Alila’s rate
3) Spacious room with wooden interior design a la Bali resort - I was totally sold on this point

I would recommend staying at the Exec room with Lounge access. Designed with such a cosy ambience, the Lounge offered the perfect quiet place to chill or do some work, with good spread of breakfast and evening cocktail. (For a wider range of breakfast choice, you could always go down to Level 2.)

The spa is a MUST to try. With the warm ambience, professional staff and relaxing massage, it was as if I was flown to Bali for a 90-min spa treatment..

For the gym, I love the fact that each treadmill has its own TV to keep one entertained while sweating away.. Lemon water at the gym is to be thankful for. Daily classes are enriching, especially the yoga classes - where I made some new friends!

Last but not least, a shoutout to all the professional and friendly staff at Alila. Special mention to Diana from Exec Lounge for the job well done managing the Lounge, Chef Sudi and Chef Ade for your generous and warm service (and thanks for the awesome food at the wine dinner!), and Frank for your professionalism and friendliness!

Looking forward to staying at Alila again soon!

Well kept hotel, good security due to heightened alerts. Rooms nice with a view of old Jakarta. Staff friendly and helpful to find nearby restaraunts, shops
Bank atm's across the street to the left and 30 ft to the right. Only 1 mile walk to freedom square and largest mosque in Indonesia. 2 Restaurants at hotel, Chinese and international cuisines. Little pricey, food average. Much cheaper eats down the street. Pool on 6th floor was nice and relaxing. Enjoyed outdoor movie at pool during evening. Overall nice hotel, would stay again and recommend.

Perfect holiday accomodation for family in Jakarta

I had a wonderful time with my parents thanks to the friendly and caring staff at Alila Hotel. Special thanks to Pak Budi the Hotel Manager who helped to upgrade my room from Club Suite to Alia Suite. The room was spacious and clean, with all the facilities you need. What we love most is its close distance to Monas Monument. National Museum and Kota Tua. Really good value for money, strongly recommend for family visit.
