Overview

The Review

Jakarta buzzes around the clock, but this modernist block in the midst of the city’s kaleidoscopic melee provides a calming refuge. Guests enter the soaring, Asian art–filled marble lobby — which creates an immediate contrast with the frenetic city outside — while upstairs, contemporary furnishings and polished wood are paired with cloudlike beds and bathrooms with bathtubs built for two.

Set in old Batavia, Jakarta’s charming Dutch colonial quarter, the hotel is well situated for exploring sights like the National Museum and the Presidential Palace, though the clientele skews heavily toward business travelers who appreciate the proximity to the commercial district.

The closets made me wish I’d packed more heavily — or done some more shopping — and I found the soothing hues a welcome break from the city’s assault of color, which is visible out the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The hotel’s restaurants are worth visiting; hit the TNC café for addictive chocolate cakes and fresh fruit smoothies, and Buzz restaurant for authentic satays and rice dishes — though adventurous eaters should explore the street stalls just outside the hotel for some of Jakarta’s tastiest, and cheapest, eats. Work off the calories at the well-equipped gym, and don’t miss the sixth-floor swimming pool, which offers jaw-dropping city panoramas. By day the latter is a calm haven; at night the decibel level can rise significantly.

The Alila brand got its start in Bali, so the zen spa feels like an island oasis — and I never leave without purchasing a few favorite Alila spa products, like the avocado hair smoothie. Every treatment on the well-edited spa menu is exceptional, but book the Balinese massage for some deep, jetlag-erasing kneading.

Very Good Service!
Reviewed 9 hours ago

Booked a ballroom for my birthday event, and everything was perfect, from the arrangement and plannings with the hotel. The food was simply amazing, all my guests loved it! Also I booked a Club Suite for myself and some of my friends, and got an upgrade to the Alila Suite. The consultant was very friendly and the room was clean, although some features weren't as comparable to other hotels I've been, I am very satisfied with my stay. Keep up the good work!

International level quality of service and hospitality with some space of improvement

Overall service quality is high, but there are some possibility of improvement, such as house keeping completeness. For long stay guests, you need to inform at the check-in about the membership service. In fact, I stayed over a month from January to February, however no information was given so I lost to obtain the opportunity of getting higher membership services. This is a major point of our service to improve..

back again naturally

I always liked Alila hotels. ?Stayed here many times before. Everything looks the same which is good except the mattress and window blinds need change. The armchair also needs to be firmed up.
If all this spruced up it can be as good as new.

Sad hotel, disappointed
Reviewed 7 days ago

The hotel is away from the business area and this is not a 4-star hotel by any scale, perhaps more like 2 to 3-star hotel. The room is austere, with few amenities, most of the furnishings are well worn and the room looks dated. The closet space is limited and smelly. The room has a 20 something inch TV, which was past its prime. The bathroom looks sad and again well past its prime.

The check-in experience was terrible, the credit card machine wouldn't work, took 2 people and 2 different machines to get the deposit transaction done. During check out, the same problem recurred. Eventually, had to ask them to do a manual transaction. The breakfast room is hot, with poor aircon and the service ain't great; food choices are more or less familiar, but the quality is not what you would expect of a 4-star hotel.

If you are Discovery black member, your status doesn't fetch you much. This hotel apparently doesn't allow lounge access unless you book an executive room. They offered no local amenity, even though Alila's policy offers local amenity, newspaper etc.. They also accidentally redeemed one of my awards without authorization, I don't really care about the award, just unhappy with the whole incident and how long it took to get an explanation on why that happened.

I am truly disappointed with the experience, I booked this hotel with great expectations and the whole experience and service were downright disappointing. Will never stay again at this hotel if I can help it.
