The Review

Jakarta buzzes around the clock, but this modernist block in the midst of the city’s kaleidoscopic melee provides a calming refuge. Guests enter the soaring, Asian art–filled marble lobby — which creates an immediate contrast with the frenetic city outside — while upstairs, contemporary furnishings and polished wood are paired with cloudlike beds and bathrooms with bathtubs built for two.

Set in old Batavia, Jakarta’s charming Dutch colonial quarter, the hotel is well situated for exploring sights like the National Museum and the Presidential Palace, though the clientele skews heavily toward business travelers who appreciate the proximity to the commercial district.

The closets made me wish I’d packed more heavily — or done some more shopping — and I found the soothing hues a welcome break from the city’s assault of color, which is visible out the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The hotel’s restaurants are worth visiting; hit the TNC café for addictive chocolate cakes and fresh fruit smoothies, and Buzz restaurant for authentic satays and rice dishes — though adventurous eaters should explore the street stalls just outside the hotel for some of Jakarta’s tastiest, and cheapest, eats. Work off the calories at the well-equipped gym, and don’t miss the sixth-floor swimming pool, which offers jaw-dropping city panoramas. By day the latter is a calm haven; at night the decibel level can rise significantly.

The Alila brand got its start in Bali, so the zen spa feels like an island oasis — and I never leave without purchasing a few favorite Alila spa products, like the avocado hair smoothie. Every treatment on the well-edited spa menu is exceptional, but book the Balinese massage for some deep, jetlag-erasing kneading.

No, no, no, no, no.

This hotel used to be an Alila, but recently changed ownership and is now the 'Sparks Luxe' -- the name being ironic, since it is anything BUT luxurious. As a previous Alila, I had relatively high expectations, as Alila properties are known for their quality.

...But all of my expectations were destroyed from the minute we entered the building. The lobby stank of mildew and stale cigarette smoke and appeared to be abandoned, with no guests or decor around.

The reception desk is hidden away in a corner, and was staffed be a very incompetent guest services agent, making our check-in process a headache and take way longer than it should have. (And we still didn't get checked in properly -- when we ordered room service for dinner that night, we were told that the deposit hadn't been applied to our room and we had to pay cash.)

I should note that we were checking in as members of a wedding party, and our room was part of that block and the entire wedding (ceremony and reception) were all happening on-site. With that in mind, I expected a more professional and coordinated check-in and reception experience.

Once we got to our room (an executive suite) the disappointment continued, as the room stank of mildew, the AC never got colder than 22c, the blackout curtains didn't completely black-out the room, the curtains had to be kept closed at all times because of how hot the room would get with them open, the bathroom amenities were cheaper than those you'd find at a motel, the bathtub was smaller than the one I have at home and had chips in the porcelain, the room had literally no art or decorations, there were no plugs/outlets next to the beds, and the room had a horrible layout -- you couldn't see the (tiny) TV from either the sofa OR the bed. The only good thing I can say about the room is that it had plenty of hot water and good water pressure.

The 'free' breakfast was just meh. It was not the type of breakfast that I would have expected, and it was definitely not on par with the breakfast buffets at the other four and five star hotels in Jakarta. The selection was limited, the coffee machine was always broken, and the food was relatively bland.

Even the guest services was lacking. We weren't smiled at or greeted by staff. No one ever asked us if we needed anything. When we called to ask for some drinking water (since the tap water in Jakarta is not potable) we were told that the maximum they could give us was two small bottles (around 300 ml) per day. How is that 'luxe'?

Keep in mind that our room was NOT cheap -- we paid Rp. 1.75 jt (around $125 USD) per night, and we have stayed in many Jakarta hotels so we have a good place to compare from. For the price we paid, we could have stayed at a MUCH nicer hotel in a MUCH nicer location.

I will never be staying at Sparks Luxe again.

Golf trip to Jakarta

This hotel was very clean and well presented, rooms were comfortable and easy to move around. The staff were friendly and helpful. Very conveniently located close to shopping and restaurants. Would recommend
