Stylish hillside sleep with topnotch local fare, splurge-worthy spa and infinity pool with a view
Set 3,100 feet above Kingston in Jamaica's Blue Mountains, Strawberry Hill is owned by Island Records mogul Chris Blackwell, who bought the place in the 1970s and is today part of his gorgeous Island Outpost hotel collection. The estate initially drew the era's top artists, like Bob Marley, Willie Nelson and Mick Jagger, who came to relax, jam and, in some cases, record. Today the property's storied connections are on display in the Gold Room, in the form of Blackwell's personal collection of photographs and the label's gold and platinum records.
Bed and Bath
Surrounded by tropical forest, the 12 Georgian-style cottages are dressed with mahogany four-poster beds, gauzy drapes and cutting-edge sound systems, and French doors that open onto large private patios—and they're arranged so that you're always just moments away from taking a dip in the infinity pool or indulging in a lemongrass wrap at the holistic spa. Bathrooms come stocked with specially created bath toiletries made with rosemary and mint from Island Outpost's organic farm.
Stone-lined paths lead to The Spa, which has just five treatment rooms, including one devoted to hydrotherapy, plus a deck for yoga sessions. Treatments like the fusion stone massage, the mud-based facial and the lemongrass wrap nod to the five elements — that's earth, air, fire, water and one of the hotel's own invention: infinity. A short walk away, the casual Library Veranda, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and the more formal Bamboo Room, which offers dinner, do some of the island's best cooking — think savory chicken roasts and mild curries. Sundays are all about brunch, and locals make the trip from Kingston to feast on jerked meats, seasoned sides and the resort's own "strawberry bliss bubbly wine."
In the Area
The resort's spa offers "elemental nature consultations" to come up with customized treatment plans based on four common (and one unique) elements: earth, fire, air, water — and infinity. Off property, Blue Mountain Bicycle organizes tours with pickups to the Hardware Gap, a popular trail that descends several thousand feet and ends up passing through small villages and coffee plantations. Or, take a tour of the Old Tavern Coffee Estate, which meticulously roasts its beans — the best in the area — and offers homemade coffee tastings.
