Forget minimalism: This jewel box of a boutique sleep overlooking Puerto Vallarta’s Rio Cuale is a riot of gem tones, rich textures and eclectic art and antiques. Guests are invited to make themselves at home, whether lounging poolside, dining on the leafy terrace, kicking back in the vibrant lounge area (with its burnt orange walls and arresting art) or feasting on croissants, fruit and coffee in the cozy kitchen — which features a 1930s Portuguese tiled wall and a show-stopping chandelier. Each of the eight guestrooms sports its own unique feel; some have intricate stained glass from Santa Cruz Church, others antique Spanish Colonial wooden doors, carved headboards and balconies, while all have King beds and views of the river or the tranquil pool and terrace.
In the Area
Explore the Romantic Zone south of the Rio Cuale, with its cafés, restaurants and local color, and make sure to drop by the famous Old Town Farmers Market, which peddles home-grown produce along with handmade crafts, jewelry and artisanal goods. Then head to El Malecon, an oceanfront promenade dotted with artworks that’s also great for people watching. Don’t leave town without getting out on magnificent Banderas Bay, known for its sublime whale watching; sign up for a boat tour with Vallarta Adventures from December to March to see the awe-inspiring humpback whales that make this bay their playground each season. To see why this town is considered one of the essential gourmet destinations in the country, book a table at one of its most feted restaurants, Café des Artistes, which fuses European techniques with Mexican flavors.
How to Get There
Garlands is a small boutique hotel right in the heart of Old Vallarta. The hotel is the result of combining 4 old traditional Mexican homes into one facility. This gem backs onto the Isla Rio Cuale which provides a wonderful peaceful setting to enjoy your breakfast, have a beverage or read a book on their riverside patio. There is also a hot tub to soak away the day. Each room is unique in size and character. The rooms are somewhat Mexican Art Deco rustic but offer most of the ammenties of a glitzy international chain. Garlands has a small pool in the main courtyard with a full cocktail bar, lounge chairs and tables. The bar is somewhat unique also in that most of the time there no one working the bar so it is self serve on the honor system. Grab a beer or make your cocktail and just write down what you enjoyed along with your room name. There is a limited room service food menu available. Martha, Tony and their fantastic team go out of their way to make sure your stay will be comfortable and enjoyable. Whether its information, events, taxis or arranging a tour they will try to make it happen and hassle free. I can't say enough about this quiet little treasure right downtown in the old city. If you're the "all inclusive" type Garlands may not be for you but, if you like to walk, explore, shop and experience more of a real Mexico this is the place.
We just love the place, Garlands del Rio is like our 2nd home in PV. They have the same staff for the last 2 years and we got a chance to know them and they got a chance to know us also. It close to anywhere, Malecon, beaches, church, market, restaurants, and entertainments.
I happened across this hotel when looking for a place to have an overnight romantic getaway with my boyfriend. It was an amazing find, lots of charm, great location on the river and very friendly helpful staff, and it was very reasonably priced. If you’re looking for a unique, romantic hotel in the romantic zone, this is it. We’ll definitely stay there again.
Super great stay here! The staff is super friendly and the locations is safe and convenient good food and shopping. The romantic zone is beautiful and I’m so glad I stayed at this hotel and in this area as opposed to other spots in PV. There’s a guest kitchen that you can use but why cook when you’re steps away from delicious street tacos and a nearby churros stand that’s only available on the evenings?
Jerry greeted us with margaritas and guacamole and Martha helped me extend my stay and also gave me a find day trip idea to Jalapa. There’s basic continental bfast or you can pay a little extra and have them make one of the items off the menu.
I would highly recommend. I wish i got to spend more time but the location is perfect and the way the hotel is tucked within building makes you feel almost recluse (in a good way). It is as if you have a small little community tucked between buildings and with the sun. Staff is great and hotel is super clean and safe.
