Forget minimalism: This jewel box of a boutique sleep overlooking Puerto Vallarta’s Rio Cuale is a riot of gem tones, rich textures and eclectic art and antiques. Guests are invited to make themselves at home, whether lounging poolside, dining on the leafy terrace, kicking back in the vibrant lounge area (with its burnt orange walls and arresting art) or feasting on croissants, fruit and coffee in the cozy kitchen — which features a 1930s Portuguese tiled wall and a show-stopping chandelier. Each of the eight guestrooms sports its own unique feel; some have intricate stained glass from Santa Cruz Church, others antique Spanish Colonial wooden doors, carved headboards and balconies, while all have King beds and views of the river or the tranquil pool and terrace.
In the Area
Explore the Romantic Zone south of the Rio Cuale, with its cafés, restaurants and local color, and make sure to drop by the famous Old Town Farmers Market, which peddles home-grown produce along with handmade crafts, jewelry and artisanal goods. Then head to El Malecon, an oceanfront promenade dotted with artworks that’s also great for people watching. Don’t leave town without getting out on magnificent Banderas Bay, known for its sublime whale watching; sign up for a boat tour with Vallarta Adventures from December to March to see the awe-inspiring humpback whales that make this bay their playground each season. To see why this town is considered one of the essential gourmet destinations in the country, book a table at one of its most feted restaurants, Café des Artistes, which fuses European techniques with Mexican flavors.
How to Get There
Loved the peaceful location on the Rio Cuale...the sound of the river running is mesmerizing. This place allows you to dream about the way things were 50-100 years ago while enjoying the conveniences of today. Right in the heart of everything and outstanding breakfasts.
Garlands is great I with my daughter and my husband. We ended up getting the Pandora suite it has a view of the pool but not of the river. The room was spacious with two beds which we wouldn’t need for just two of us but for three it was perfect. The staff is very kind and helpful.
My boyfriend and I truly enjoyed the location of this beautiful hotel. It's walking distance to old Puerto Vallarta, on the river (cualle) and about a 5 min walk straight to the beach. It is very quiet to us, with jazz music at night from the restaurant across the river. We stayed 3 nights in the room next to check in area as we booked a package through Expedia instead of direct with hotel. This room I don't think is booked often it's not as nice as the others so I would next time go direct as you get many perks such as a discount, free breakfast and choice of room if available. The owner, Diego, offered us a gorgeous room in their sister hotel up the street which is GORGEOUS and has a pool that gets sun all day long and a soaking/hot tub overlooking the mountains!! Holy moly! The only reason we passed was we wanted a king bed as we were escaping our toddler at home hahahah ANYWAY they were kind enough to put us in the stained glass room overlooking the pool at Garlands our last night and it was also so gorgeous. I don't know of any complaints, such charm and good vibes from all staff and hosts! Our flight left at 5 pm so we left our luggage and hit the beach, they even have a shower/bathroom that we got ready in before we left for the airport. Some great quick tips: Use Uber. It's easy and fast. Walk everywhere, it says it's much longer on google maps than it typically takes. If you are up for late night eats, head downtown to old Puerto Vallarta things stay open later than in the romantic zone. There are TONS of Americans, which was kinda weird honestly! I also found most of the locals spoke english. We took an ATV trip into the mountains and it was so worth it. Try walking down to the South end of the beach if you are looking for the gay beach/clubs. One day we took a gorgeous hike past the end of the beach and to lunch. I think this was the most scenic, smaller private rocky beaches. Just follow the locals to find the paths.
The hotel also offers beach towels, chairs and hats if you want to take them to the beach. Next time that is on our list! Can't wait to visit again. Thank you Garlands and all your staff!

This hotel was perfect! Every room is different and unique! I highly recommend the rooms that overlook the river. There is a kitchen that we were able to use and cook and store our own food. We will definitely stay here again!!!
Service from Marta and Jerry was exceptional! Overall hotel and location was superb. Nice to see people being so proud of where they work !!! I had a foot injury and each day Jerry and Marta checked in to see if I was okay or needed anything extra! Will be back soon
