Forget minimalism: This jewel box of a boutique sleep overlooking Puerto Vallarta’s Rio Cuale is a riot of gem tones, rich textures and eclectic art and antiques. Guests are invited to make themselves at home, whether lounging poolside, dining on the leafy terrace, kicking back in the vibrant lounge area (with its burnt orange walls and arresting art) or feasting on croissants, fruit and coffee in the cozy kitchen — which features a 1930s Portuguese tiled wall and a show-stopping chandelier. Each of the eight guestrooms sports its own unique feel; some have intricate stained glass from Santa Cruz Church, others antique Spanish Colonial wooden doors, carved headboards and balconies, while all have King beds and views of the river or the tranquil pool and terrace.
In the Area
Explore the Romantic Zone south of the Rio Cuale, with its cafés, restaurants and local color, and make sure to drop by the famous Old Town Farmers Market, which peddles home-grown produce along with handmade crafts, jewelry and artisanal goods. Then head to El Malecon, an oceanfront promenade dotted with artworks that’s also great for people watching. Don’t leave town without getting out on magnificent Banderas Bay, known for its sublime whale watching; sign up for a boat tour with Vallarta Adventures from December to March to see the awe-inspiring humpback whales that make this bay their playground each season. To see why this town is considered one of the essential gourmet destinations in the country, book a table at one of its most feted restaurants, Café des Artistes, which fuses European techniques with Mexican flavors.
How to Get There
Every aspect of my stay was exceptionally great. From check-in, to check-out, the staff made it clear they were there to help make my stay in the hotel, and Vallarta, as comfortable as possible. The physical aspects of the hotel were perfect. The location in the Romantic Zone, the grounds, and boutique style decor was ideal for my stay. The room and grounds were clean and comfortable. I made friends with many other temporary residents of the hotel during our shared stays. These new friends enhanced my time immeasurably and would not have developed in a resort or smaller hotel. Jerry and Martha, always smiling, were ever ready to help answer questions about the area or make my stay more relaxed. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a magical experience while staying in paradise.
I cant say one thing about this place that is negative. From the minute Jerry greeted us at the gate, I knew this would be a special place to stay. Everything is beautiful on the property from the room furnishings to the well protected grounds. I cant say enough good things about the employees (especially Jerry!) - they were friendly, helpful, very kind on Spanish translations, AMAZING! If you want a little hidden gem that is in the heart of it all - this is the place to stay!
Loved the Garlands. Reminded me of places we stayed in Europe. Romantic and boutique style. Staff was wonderful. Rooms clean and well appointed. Very quiet which was perfect for us! Would definitely stay again.
The employees are very friendly and very helpful. The location is superb, as it is in the downtown center. No hills to walk up. Restaurants and shops are easy walkable. Rooms are nice and air conditioned. Breakfast can be had at the dining room table or outside on the patio, next to the river. If I go back to PV, I would stay here again.
The Garlands Del Rio provided me with excellent service (Mucho Gracias Jerry y Martha) on a stunningly beautiful property. I felt pampered throughout and it was the perfect getaway. Because of confusion with the VIP pickup from the airport (and getting a taxi is so easy/cheaper), I will not opt for the additional service in the future but I will definitely return to the hotel.
