How to Get There
It was good all around. My wife and I were here for a short vacation for some rest and relaxation. It is very laid back and calm. If you are looking for more of a party resort this isn't the spot. This is a very family friendly resort! It is also a short taxi ride to downtown and other sites! We definitely will be back!
The staff were the highlight of our stay. Maggie was an absolute star and couldn't have done more to make our stay special, but thanks also to Jose and Ignacio for their fantastic service.
The hotel is in a fantastic location with easy access to the centre of Puerto Vallarta and the marina. Our only gripe was the drinks which appeared to be watered down and consequently lacked in both taste and alcohol. Also the buffet was held outside on evenings and you were sat at tables of about 12 people that you did not know and we were not comfortable with that so we did not eat there. Also on Valentines night in the buffet area they tried to seat us with another couple but we refused.
We've been to several resorts in Puerto Vallarta, and this is one of the smaller ones. Nevertheless, we found this to be plus rather than a negative. Within the smaller space we found everything we needed: a lovely small beach, comfortable room with a fabulous view of Banderas Bay, great food (breakfast in the verandah area of the buffet was delightful - made-to-order omelettes and other egg styles, made-to-order smoothies, great breakfast pastries - and anything else tickled your fancy). There were 3 restaurants to choose from for dinner - and no reservations needed. The Italian was great, and we ate there several times. Room service was great, too. Very quick.
The resort's pool is also rather small, but there we always found a lounger and the swim-up pool bar was wonderful (all the bartenders were great).
Which leads us to the staff - the best part of this resort. They were always unfailingly courteous, genuinely friendly, and efficient. They would go out of their way to make sure you were well served and happy.
Air conditioning worked perfectly in the room; blackout curtains overlapped, so no clothes pins needed (I always pack a few just in case...); the water was plentiful and hot; and Maria kept our room spotlessly clean. In fact, the odd day the room was cleaned more than once. Our fridge was kept full of exactly what we wanted and checked daily. Room safe was easy to operate, spacious and held tablets, etc. Plenty of drawers for clothing, although there was no hook in the bathroom to hang clothing. (We had one of the lower floor rooms, not one of the more expensive 8th and 9th floor rooms - we were quoted an extra 95 dollars per day for those.) Our room was showing its age, but everything worked well and we both got a good night's sleep on the comfy mattress and pillows.
Another plus for this resort is that fact that the Caracol Mall is across the street. We wandered through this mall several times and always felt safe. The Soriana department store (a little bit like Walmart) at the mall is a great place to buy toiletries so you don't have to pack them - things like mouthwash, etc.
Wifi seemed to work well (most of the time, anyway) both in the room and out of it. Speaking of communication, my husband and I had purchased new phones in Canada at the end of December, so we unlocked our old ones before we came down and headed over to the Telcel booth at the Caracol Mall shortly after we arrived. The gal there put in new SIM cards and we purchased a 17-day plan. This included unlimited calling both throughout Mexico and in the US and Canada. They worked perfectly and were a great help in finding places when walking around the Malecon and Romantic Zone. Price? 8.90 Canadian for each phone (129 pesos).
We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely resort. Highly recommended!
This is the 3rd time my husband and I have been back to this resort. We have stayed at Riu's, Barcelo's, Sandals, Couples and a Crown Paradise once. This is a good resort, great food, good food and drink service (Luis at the pool is wonderful!), and wonderful weather. Despite 2 very good years prior to this we had a few issues this year that I feel should be passed along. First, when we arrived at 9:30pm on a Sunday night they did not have our room available. We were downgraded to the 1st floor (two doubles and lowest level). We asked for anything higher and were told nothing was available. I talked to another couple who we friended during our travel here on the same plane (1st timers) and they checked in after us and were upgraded to the 7th floor. So I was disappointed that nothing was available for us repeaters and we were downgraded and first timers were upgraded to the 7th floor. We ended up having to change rooms the next day and we got a nice room on the 3rd floor but it was very inconvenient to have to move. Another couple who we recommended the place to after our first year also got a complementary upgrade when they came 2 days later. I don't expect to get an upgrade all the time, but a downgrade was disappointing. After I explained my disappointment to the front desk they did give us a pass to the rooftop pool which we did use. The second area of concern came when my husband cut his foot on a hard piece of plastic at the pool. Not normally a huge concern for most but my husband is a medic alert for a bleeding disorder. Security brought bandaids very quickly, asked for our room number but then left right away. We ended up making sure my husband stopped bleeding and the area was cleaned up. I guess I expected they would be more concerned with the follow up and making sure no one else got hurt. Lastly, our smoke detector started beeping at 4am the last night of our stay. We called maintenance who responded within 15 minutes and ended up removing the entire unit - since they couldn't get the beeping to stop. Needless to say no one got any more sleep once the thing started beeping and by the time they got the unit removed. I know these things happen but I was disappointed no one followed up with us on this issue when we checked out. I ended up telling the front desk when we left so they made sure to replace the unit. Again, it's a nice resort but they missed on a few items for us this year!
We recently stayed at Fiesta Americana to attend a friends wedding. I cannot say enough good things about our stay! We upgraded to the Fiesta Club, which gives you access to an adults only pool (with a breathtaking view) and it was worth every penny. The drinks and food at Sonne were out of this world. The drinks especially were higher quality. The food at all the restaurants for dinner was superb.
The pool staff at Sonne were fantastic too: Sergio and Luis were just fantastic, they went above and beyond to ensure we had fresh drinks and plenty of water to stay hydrated :) Leti and Betty were behind the bar cooking up the best food for us as well. Ana made sure our room was clean and we had turn down service some nights which was nice to come back to after dinner.
We did have one complaint: We had reserved a King bed in the Fiesta Club block of rooms months in advance, and when we got to our room, we walked in to two double beds. We went back to the concierge to correct this mistake, and they said they were fully booked and could not do anything about our room. I was really bummed about this. It would have been nice to give us something in return since this is not what we had originally booked.
It was really safe to go into town, which we did three times. I can't imagine going anywhere else in Mexico after being on this side of the country! It was easy to get around, you can use uber and lyft asily, and the drivers were always really helpful to give advice about where to go and what to see downtown.
