Overview

The Review

Even if you don’t know a chukka from a withers, you can taste the glamorous lifestyle of the international polo elite and unwind on eight miles of beach paradise at Costa Careyes, the eco-conscious resort created by the visionary Italian entrepreneur Gian Franco Brignone to accommodate his discriminating coterie of fabulous friends.

Inspired by the Aga Khan’s Sardinian paradise, Smeralda, Brignone scoured the earth for the perfect beachfront site, with great year-round weather and natural beauty, on which to build a place “to appreciate the music from heaven, earth and sea.”

The hopeless romantic in me swooned at the sight of the small cluster of bougainvillea-pink thatched-roof bungalows on the sands of Playa Rosa, hidden along a quiet swoop of the rugged Jalisco coast, which is ringed by mountains and jungle. Sybaritic, sure, but the luxury is simple and restrained. Nothing interferes — no droning jet-ski engines to spoil a massage in the pure air.

The concierge staff facilitates all. As for me, I might never forget my sunset beach-gallop astride one of the finest ponies I’ve ever seen, or the artisanal-tequila margarita that followed.

Leave it to the Europeans to ace the dining. People gather for late lunches and casual dinners at festive Playa Rosa, right on the beach, where fresh seafood is served with an Italian flair and you can enjoy a tequila tasting. Pizza and local specialties are served at Punto Como in the cultural plaza.

The beach bungalows and casitas (with full kitchen, living room and private terraces) are comfortable and well tended, and some come with plunge pools. If you can’t live without it, there is WiFi and satellite TV, but, seriously, a thick novel seems more suitable. Some places say “barefoot elegance,” but this one means it.

Simply Magical!
Reviewed 1 year ago

When you Google Careyes which is located on Mexico´s Pacific Coast you are flooded with news stories and articles about this exotic and magical spot which is one of the worlds most coveted destinations among the cognoscenti, with an unparalleled list of VIP and celebrity visitors who come to enjoy the amazing setting and quality of life.

In the words of Gian Franco Brignone, “Careyes is a guarded secret only known by special people.”

Careyes is a lifestyle and a magical one at that. Guests are graciously welcomed and the setting offers stunning clear Azul Water, pristine beaches and impressive Architecture at every turn.

Most noted for their unique architecture are the areas Castles (or in Spanish Castillos) which dot the landscape. Each Castle offers a full staff that will make sure that your every need is attended to.

One of the Castles is Castillo Sol de Occidente where I recently stayed. This 6 bedroom Estate offers in addition to its own private beach, movie screening room and Heliport, one of the most commanding views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding areas to be had. The staff of 5 is without question superb.

One of the newer enclaves in Careyes are the Constellation Villas – 3 stunning Mini Estates properties that are each about 7000 square feet with a full staff.

You can also enjoy the feel of Careyes and enjoy all that it has to offer in two of the smaller properties.

The Casitas – With its crow´s eye view of Playa Rosa these units stand strong on their own. A short walk from the Casitas is the famed Playa Rosa Beach and Beach Club. Breakfast at the Beach Club is even included in the nightly rate which starts at $400.00 per night. There are one, two, three and four bedroom units available some of which have a private pool. In the Casitas, the Concierge can arrange a massage or even a Personal Chef.

The Bungalows – Barefoot Chic best describes these units! Three units located directly on the beach and next door to the Playa Rosa Beach Club. Ideal for enjoying the water, sun, fun and activities during the day and the stars at night.

Costa Careyes has a Polo Club where tournaments are held from November to April and visitors can enjoy, at no charge, exciting games between Polo teams who come to Careyes from around the world to play.

A wedding at Costa Careyes is a truly wonderful and unforgettable experience. The private grounds of Careyes are adjacent to a nature preserve and the location is perfectly situated to enjoy the magnificent Pacific Ocean sunsets.

Costa Careyes would be a highly desirable destination for small and intimate weddings with guests staying within the Resort in the nearby casitas and Villas.

In summary, Careyes should be on everyone´s Travel Wish List. A visit to this sanctuary is one that you are your family will remember for a lifetime.

Costa Careyes Resort is located just 1 hour & 15 minute drive north from Manzanillo International Airport and 2 hours & 30 minute drive south from Puerto Vallarta International Airport

Heaven

A truly heavenly spot, despite the unfortunate recent hurricane, but the magic still there despite some structural damage. Service superb and the food delicious and very fresh. Time seems to stand still, but in fact accelerates far too quickly.

Casita Tucan is wonderful

One of our very best experiences in Mexico. Casita Tucan is a well decorated two bedroom two level small house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You should take the delicious meals served at Playa Rosa Restaurant.

We only can recommend the Casitas!
Reviewed 4 years ago

We were quite nervous whether this place will live up to our expectation. We understood that the casitas were built +20 years ago, but friends who know us recommended them to us and they were right.
This is a wonderful place. We stayed at a two bedroom Casita called Tucan. This place felt brand new, the furniture, the kitchen, the bathrooms and the pool. The view is stunning and you can not get enough admiring the sunset from your terrasse or sitting in the pool.
The private beach is awesome too.
