In the rolling fields of Tuscany’s Maremma region, Conti di San Bonifacio is a beautifully restored farmhouse that sits neatly atop its own poggio (hill). The homey yet state-of-the-art interiors make the property feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. An ivy-clad awning offers shade from the sun, and the blissfully cool pool is the ultimate spot to while away a lazy afternoon. There are just seven rooms, with plenty of cozy hideaways and a vast living room on the ground floor where you can enjoy the honor-system bar into the early hours. The nearby hilltop town Massa Marittima is well worth a visit, if only to marvel at its magnificent 13th-century cathedral. But closer to home, spend an afternoon at the estate’s winery to taste wines straight from the barrel accompanied by delicious cold cuts. Local wine and food in a spectacular setting — Tuscan countryside experiences don’t come much better than this.
In the Area
Afternoon tastings and tours can be arranged with the sommelier for an additional fee. It’s definitely worth the little extra. Take a half-hour drive to the coastal resort of Castiglione della Pescaia for a swim and a relaxing stroll along the harbor. A 25-minute drive away, Massa Marittima’s La Tana dei Brilli restaurant is a local favorite, serving hearty Tuscan stews and delicious antipasti. Or take a trip through Maremma’s national park and explore the region’s amazing wildlife and plants.
How to Get There
This was our first stop on our Italian getaway, and it completely spoiled us for the rest of our trip! No matter, this hotel is a truly magical little spot hidden away in the Tuscan countryside and it charmed us from the moment we drove up until we were reluctantly dragged away to our next stop.
We splurged on the Master Suite, and were so glad we did. The room was spacious, beautifully decorated and clean. The bathroom was huge, with an incredible bathtub and rain shower and two vanities. But the main attraction is the expansive private rooftop terrace with the most breathtaking views of the vineyards and countryside...we could've sat there for days to just take in the fresh, crisp air and look out over the land in awe!
The rest of the hotel building is cozy and absolutely lovely. We loved that the decor felt authentically Tuscan and yet still modern - for me, the decor of a hotel property is a big part of the overall experience and this was truly a treat here. Most of our meals were enjoyed on-property, and the food was excellent. They were also very accommodating for me with my Celiac Disease - I had plenty of gluten free options to choose from. And of course, the wines are incredible. One night, the concierge made arrangements for us to go into Masa Marittima for dinner and we had a wonderful evening in this quaint little town.
If you plan not to bring a car, be aware that you'll be limited on what you can do unless you don't mind paying for a taxi or a transfer to one of the neighboring towns. This was completely fine with us, as we were there to relax and enjoy the property for the most part. We rented a Vespa one afternoon and the chef packed us a beautiful (and huge!!!) picnic to take to a nearby lake. Otherwise, we just spent our time lazing about and enjoying beautiful wine and views. If the weather had been a tad warmer we would've loved taking a dip in the lovely pool. We also enjoyed a private cocktail class on site, which was great fun. Next time, we'll be sure to take advantage of one of the wine tasting experiences as well.
By and large, one of the highlights of Conti di San Bonifacio is the staff. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful, and since it's such an intimate property you really feel like you start to get to know people over your stay. They are clearly well versed in hospitality and know how to make their guests feel welcome, and it also seems that they genuinely enjoy working there (which is no surprise, given what a lovely place it is!). We hope we can return soon and that we may see some of the same kind faces from this stay!
If I had one tiny little gripe, it would be the small issue of flies and some other kind of bugs (not sure what they were, they looked like what we just call stink bugs in the South) - they tend to leave doors and windows open to enjoy the beautiful fresh air here, which is wonderful, but the bugs did get to be quite a nuisance at certain points. Of course you expect some of that in a country setting like this, to be sure. There were just a few times when we would've liked to sit outside or on the porch but there were so many flies, and they were so aggressive, that we ended up moving back inside to our room where we had screens on the windows (even with the screens, those stink-bug guys kept getting into the room quite often). I said to my husband on the last day that if we had been anywhere else, I probably would've been pretty annoyed by the bugs - admittedly I'm not a very "naturey" person - BUT, everything else was so wonderful at Conti di San Bonifacio, and I loved it there so very much, that it really felt inconsequential. It almost somehow just felt like part of the charm of the place. And it would certainly not keep us from coming back!
I would highly recommend this resort if you're looking for a true getaway in the Tuscan countryside. An absolute gem, and we can't wait to come back!
This is the nicest place we’ve ever stayed. The wine and food were divine and the beauty of the property and views is unmatched. Valentina provided incredible and personal service, she was amazing, and so were all the other staff members we interacted with (chefs, dinner servers, wine maker, etc). The cooking class and wine tour were thorough and enjoyable. The pool was clean and relaxing, the room was incredible and quiet. Great decor and bathroom. I would come back here in a heartbeat!
Andrea gave us the most fantastic welcome and we had two days in the best hotel ever stayed. The chef has an amazing menu of local and more varied dishes and all the staff were simply sweet. We are very much looking forward to going back next year.
