Rustic-luxe hilltop farmhouse set on an award-winning wine estate in southern Tuscany

The Lowdown

In the rolling fields of Tuscany’s Maremma region, Conti di San Bonifacio is a beautifully restored farmhouse that sits neatly atop its own poggio (hill). The homey yet state-of-the-art interiors make the property feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. An ivy-clad awning offers shade from the sun, and the blissfully cool pool is the ultimate spot to while away a lazy afternoon. There are just seven rooms, with plenty of cozy hideaways and a vast living room on the ground floor where you can enjoy the honor-system bar into the early hours. The nearby hilltop town Massa Marittima is well worth a visit, if only to marvel at its magnificent 13th-century cathedral. But closer to home, spend an afternoon at the estate’s winery to taste wines straight from the barrel accompanied by delicious cold cuts. Local wine and food in a spectacular setting — Tuscan countryside experiences don’t come much better than this.

In the Area

Afternoon tastings and tours can be arranged with the sommelier for an additional fee. It’s definitely worth the little extra. Take a half-hour drive to the coastal resort of Castiglione della Pescaia for a swim and a relaxing stroll along the harbor. A 25-minute drive away, Massa Marittima’s La Tana dei Brilli restaurant is a local favorite, serving hearty Tuscan stews and delicious antipasti. Or take a trip through Maremma’s national park and explore the region’s amazing wildlife and plants.

Best Winery tour - ever!
Reviewed 1 month ago

Daniele made our wine tasting experience extraordinary. Within 20 minutes, we learned more than we have in 20 years of winery tours. From sapling to the crush, Daniele has a passion for his art to make great wine - and shares his knowledge humbly and with creative enthusiasm! We throughly enjoyed our visit to Cont di San Bonifacio. - the staff are engaging and seem to share a bond of passion for doing their hospitality well. We felt spoiled from the moment we arrived until we left.

Beautiful Resort, Great Food, Incredible Scenery

We celebrated our anniversary at the beautiful Conti di San Bonifacio Wine Resort and had the best time! Beautiful views, great food, and incredible service all contribute to a picturesque Tuscan experience. We also opted to enjoy some of the activities you can book through the resort and had so much fun. This was truly the highlight of our trip to Italy and we can't wait to travel back!

Great staff and property!

We went to Conti di San Bonifacio for our honeymoon after having gotten married at Monteverdi and we had a great time. The staff were lovely and extremely accommodating! The villa was cute and well situated overlooking the vineyard. The cooking class and wine experience were both really fun and the chef and the wine maker were incredibly knowledgeable. The only reason I gave it a 4, which I would have preferred to do 4.5, is because it is not for the animal lover at all! I am not a crazy PETA person and have some items with both leather and fur however, the entire place is decorated from head to toe with hides even some still having the branding on them. For me, having to see this branded hide in the bathroom every day was a reminder of how this rug was once living. As you may know this area is know for their Wild Boar, and yes I eat meat, but the decor strewn about having while boar candle holders and coats racks was a bit much for me. Wild boar skeletons and stuffed wild boar or mounted wild boar...you get the point. Other than that we knew we were going off season and that some of the things that they are know for, like the outside bar, wouldn't be available to us and so we took day trips to places recommended by the staff and we had a blast. I highly recommend shopping in the small square of Massa Marittima and also we went to Castiglione Della Pescaia which is on the coast and has a great beach. Overall our stay was great and if you don't mind the animal decor then I highly recommend paying a visit!!!

An unforgettable weekend in Toscana

This resort is situated on the hill overlooking the vineyard and with olive trees surround the back of the building, meaning you have an exclusive, tranquil and lush environment for you only. The view of our room is absolutely a piece of heaven on earth. My husband and I stayed there for three nights and we were treated with the best service and care ever by the passionate staff during dining time and whenever we need them. The resort itself and the interior fits so well with our expectation of the countryside, cozy, luxury yet not overwhelming. You can tell the owner has really good taste in balancing and choosing the right ornaments. We pretty much tried all the dishes on the menu of Maremmana and we taste the delicate touch the chef put on each Toscana dishes, we just love it! Also, we had such a wonderful and fruitful time with Daniele, the winemaker, who walked us through the winemaking journey step by step and around the property. I don't think any class in the world could teach you so much about the art of winemaking that ends with tasting them. This is definitely our best hotel experience so far. Recommend to anyone who's looking for a time only for yourself inside and out.

Memorable and authentic wine experience

My sister and I came during an off season weekend this winter to the resort and were treated with the utmost attention and care by head winemaker Daniele. Even though we arrived late on a Friday afternoon when most other resorts/wineries were closed, Daniele offered us a thorough and personalized tour of their vineyards, cellar, grounds and tasting room. We had the unique experience of tasting wines directly from the aging barrels and opportunity to ask personal questions. Daniele is very experienced in the art and science of winemaking and shared much of his knowledge spanning different wine styles and across international regions. The wines made here are very special and have a unique connection to the landscape and culture here. We couldn’t have asked for a better Tuscany wine tour experience!

We absolutely loved the resort. It is so polished and professionally run... it has a wonderfully relaxing yet chic decor. Andrea is one of the managers and helped us with check-in and made us feel right at home immediately! We loved chatting with her and hearing about the experiences and amenities available to guests. She was so helpful and kind. We felt like we were staying with friends here versus being at a hotel.... also, the rooms are beautiful and tastefully decorated. Very clean, with modern amenities yet a local feel.

I can’t wait to return to the resort again. This place would be a showstopper in the warmer seasons! I highly recommend!
