Overview

Rustic-luxe hilltop farmhouse set on an award-winning wine estate in southern Tuscany

The Lowdown

In the rolling fields of Tuscany’s Maremma region, Conti di San Bonifacio is a beautifully restored farmhouse that sits neatly atop its own poggio (hill). The homey yet state-of-the-art interiors make the property feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. An ivy-clad awning offers shade from the sun, and the blissfully cool pool is the ultimate spot to while away a lazy afternoon. There are just seven rooms, with plenty of cozy hideaways and a vast living room on the ground floor where you can enjoy the honor-system bar into the early hours. The nearby hilltop town Massa Marittima is well worth a visit, if only to marvel at its magnificent 13th-century cathedral. But closer to home, spend an afternoon at the estate’s winery to taste wines straight from the barrel accompanied by delicious cold cuts. Local wine and food in a spectacular setting — Tuscan countryside experiences don’t come much better than this.

In the Area

Afternoon tastings and tours can be arranged with the sommelier for an additional fee. It’s definitely worth the little extra. Take a half-hour drive to the coastal resort of Castiglione della Pescaia for a swim and a relaxing stroll along the harbor. A 25-minute drive away, Massa Marittima’s La Tana dei Brilli restaurant is a local favorite, serving hearty Tuscan stews and delicious antipasti. Or take a trip through Maremma’s national park and explore the region’s amazing wildlife and plants.

Attended a wedding there
Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We went there for a wedding in October, 2018. We stayed across the valley at another wine resort, but went to Bonafacio for a dinner prior to the wedding then the wedding and dinner itself. Fabulous food and a wonderful staff. Beautiful facility. You cannot go wrong choosing this lovely place.

Lovely spot

A brief stop on the way to Rome. Lovely spot with only a handful of rooms. You can understand why it is so popular with weddings and is booked out most weekends. Stayed in a double room which was comfortable and well kitted out. Pleasant staff. Affordable house wines. The continental breakfast was a bit of a let down however dinner at the on-site restaurant very good. Can be a bit noisy if your neighbours are having a big one so bring some earplugs.

EVEN BETTER THAN USUAL!

We keep on coming back to this piece of heaven and there is obviously a reason for that. The facilities are superb, the staff will always go the extra mile to accommodate any request and the food is just what you expect from a Tuscan organic farm: seasonal, fresh and tasty.
We spent the last 4 days of our trip in mid September and were very lucky with the weather. This also helped to not leave the resort at all. Sunbathing in the gorgeous pool enjoying unbeatable views, wine tasting in the cellar and also participating to harvest! It doesn’t get any better. Everything topped up with a great breakfast in the morning and superb meals at the restaurant for both lunch and dinner. We loved the fresh tomatoes from their garden and the daily baked bread! The only negative thing is that they run out of olive oil so we could not take some home as always… We will need to come back again 😉

Good but let down by the food.

Lovely rooms, fantastic views, friendly staff, let down by the food and by being overpriced.

The food is not great at all. Breakfast is very basic, with limited selection of pastries and fruit. Considering the price of the rooms cooked options should really be included (or eggs to order at the very least)

Many items missing from the menu - we stayed for 3 days and they didn’t have squid, mushrooms, tomatoes or bacon throughout our stay.

We ordered scrambled eggs which were unseasoned and served alone without toast for 11 euros (Toast brought on request) The fried eggs came cold (hard yolks) and also without any sides as they were not available. We asked to have boar sausages instead but they were incredibly salty and almost inedible.

For lunch we had burgers that came very dry and over cooked, served in a cheap sesame seed bun that turned to dust when you held it. A tiny morsel of cheese and about five thing slithers of fried onion.

Seems crazy to have ingredients of such low quality when you are in Tuscany and surrounded by amazing local produce. Swap the sesame bun for a local bread, add some lettuce, add a tomato slice, add some relish or serve with mustard! This would have made it worth the 16 EUR price tag.

Tasting menu had one or two nice dishes the rest were very average. The boar was so dry from over cooking it was nearly inedible. To be fair the pork lion and pasta with prawns were delicious.

Wine tour was excellent but also felt expensive for what it was.

Atmosphere is nice but felt understaffed. When you wanted something the staff were often hard to find and when you asked for something it often took a long time to appear (although I think this is how Italy works in general).
