In the rolling fields of Tuscany’s Maremma region, Conti di San Bonifacio is a beautifully restored farmhouse that sits neatly atop its own poggio (hill). The homey yet state-of-the-art interiors make the property feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. An ivy-clad awning offers shade from the sun, and the blissfully cool pool is the ultimate spot to while away a lazy afternoon. There are just seven rooms, with plenty of cozy hideaways and a vast living room on the ground floor where you can enjoy the honor-system bar into the early hours. The nearby hilltop town Massa Marittima is well worth a visit, if only to marvel at its magnificent 13th-century cathedral. But closer to home, spend an afternoon at the estate’s winery to taste wines straight from the barrel accompanied by delicious cold cuts. Local wine and food in a spectacular setting — Tuscan countryside experiences don’t come much better than this.
In the Area
Afternoon tastings and tours can be arranged with the sommelier for an additional fee. It’s definitely worth the little extra. Take a half-hour drive to the coastal resort of Castiglione della Pescaia for a swim and a relaxing stroll along the harbor. A 25-minute drive away, Massa Marittima’s La Tana dei Brilli restaurant is a local favorite, serving hearty Tuscan stews and delicious antipasti. Or take a trip through Maremma’s national park and explore the region’s amazing wildlife and plants.
How to Get There
My sister and I came during an off season weekend this winter to the resort and were treated with the utmost attention and care by head winemaker Daniele. Even though we arrived late on a Friday afternoon when most other resorts/wineries were closed, Daniele offered us a thorough and personalized tour of their vineyards, cellar, grounds and tasting room. We had the unique experience of tasting wines directly from the aging barrels and opportunity to ask personal questions. Daniele is very experienced in the art and science of winemaking and shared much of his knowledge spanning different wine styles and across international regions. The wines made here are very special and have a unique connection to the landscape and culture here. We couldn’t have asked for a better Tuscany wine tour experience!
We absolutely loved the resort. It is so polished and professionally run... it has a wonderfully relaxing yet chic decor. Andrea is one of the managers and helped us with check-in and made us feel right at home immediately! We loved chatting with her and hearing about the experiences and amenities available to guests. She was so helpful and kind. We felt like we were staying with friends here versus being at a hotel.... also, the rooms are beautiful and tastefully decorated. Very clean, with modern amenities yet a local feel.
I can’t wait to return to the resort again. This place would be a showstopper in the warmer seasons! I highly recommend!
We had a wonderful stay. The staff, accommodations and service were exceptional. We started our adventure with a warm welcome from Andrea who took care of us leading up to our trip and during our entire stay by helping us fill our days with unique experiences from the winery. A delicious cooking class from Alberto, an adorable and talented young chef whose creations were delicious and original. Daniel, the well traveled, smart and entrepreneurial winemaker gave us a private olive oil tasting followed by a wine experience where we learned about the estates wine process will exploring the grounds and tasting delicious wines followed by a delicious dinner around the fireplace with even better company. Already planning our next trip back!
Our stay at CDSB was one of the best if not the very best weekend getaways I have ever had. With a small group of friends and family we were able to come for a long weekend and enjoy a private cooking lesson the second we walked in the door where we made fresh pasta, eggplant parmigiana and of course tiramisu while we sipped on the resorts prosecco that seemed to keep refilling itself in the glass. The next day we enjoyed coffees in the cozy lounge area that felt like our own living room except even warmer and cozier. We then did a private olive oil tasting with the most knowledgeable winemaker and then did the wine experience where we learned everything we wanted to know and more about the winerys vineyard and cellar and the wine making process. Overall, the food was delicious, the wine endless, the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the company of the hotel management the very best. I’ll clme back every chance I get!
Great place with a fantastic view. Food and wine at its best. Professional staff, very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend the wine experience... You see the grapes, you touch and taste them, then you enjoy them in your glass 🍷!
We went there for a wedding in October, 2018. We stayed across the valley at another wine resort, but went to Bonafacio for a dinner prior to the wedding then the wedding and dinner itself. Fabulous food and a wonderful staff. Beautiful facility. You cannot go wrong choosing this lovely place.
