Rustic-luxe hilltop farmhouse set on an award-winning wine estate in southern Tuscany

The Lowdown

In the rolling fields of Tuscany’s Maremma region, Conti di San Bonifacio is a beautifully restored farmhouse that sits neatly atop its own poggio (hill). The homey yet state-of-the-art interiors make the property feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. An ivy-clad awning offers shade from the sun, and the blissfully cool pool is the ultimate spot to while away a lazy afternoon. There are just seven rooms, with plenty of cozy hideaways and a vast living room on the ground floor where you can enjoy the honor-system bar into the early hours. The nearby hilltop town Massa Marittima is well worth a visit, if only to marvel at its magnificent 13th-century cathedral. But closer to home, spend an afternoon at the estate’s winery to taste wines straight from the barrel accompanied by delicious cold cuts. Local wine and food in a spectacular setting — Tuscan countryside experiences don’t come much better than this.

In the Area

Afternoon tastings and tours can be arranged with the sommelier for an additional fee. It’s definitely worth the little extra. Take a half-hour drive to the coastal resort of Castiglione della Pescaia for a swim and a relaxing stroll along the harbor. A 25-minute drive away, Massa Marittima’s La Tana dei Brilli restaurant is a local favorite, serving hearty Tuscan stews and delicious antipasti. Or take a trip through Maremma’s national park and explore the region’s amazing wildlife and plants.

Absolutely Outstanding Stay!!

This was the most amazing and relaxing place I've ever been. My boyfriend and I had originally planned on staying one night but as soon as we got there we immediately booked a second night! We did the complete wine tour upon arrival, we throughly enjoyed it! Drinking from the barrels - a wine lovers dream! We stayed in the the most beautiful room I could have ever imagined (suite 1). It had a huge terrace overlooking the vineyard. The staff were excellent, everyone was so friendly! The food, wine, drinks.. everything was outstanding. I couldn't recommend this place more. If I get married, it will 100% be here!!! Thank you for everything Conti Di San Bonfacio <3

Returned a second time - and it was even better

Stayed at CdSB for two nights to begin a six week stay in the Maremma. From start to finish this place is outstanding in every way - service, food, accommodation, staff, vibe. When we arrived they'd just put the finishing touches on the tree bar - a wonderfully thought out area around the magnificent trees that are just outside of the hotel. We had weekly dinners here and each week the chef Matteo prepared delicious food all locally sourced. Vespa rental - with picnic lunch - is available and loads of fun. The wine and olive oil made on the premises are outstanding. Highly recommend and I hope we can return for a third time.

Amazing, Relaxing, Perfect Tuscany Setting

We (3 women) stayed for two nights. The resort is very intimate (I think they have 7 rooms?). The staff makes you feel very special and welcome. Every request is met with "of course, this is not a problem." We took full advantage of the resort offerings (picnic by the lake, trip to the beach, massages, cooking class on site), and LOVED everything. It was hard to leave! If you visit the resort, be sure to try the wild boar. It's incredible. Also, check out their wines. They are reasonably priced and have a great flavor for normal table dining. I would be remiss if I didn't also say that the setting is absolutely beautiful. It's like a picture from a postcard.

This winery exceeded all of our expectations! It was beyond beautiful and words cannot even describe how amazing our experience was...the food, the staff, the rooms, views, winery, tasting etc was all fantastic. We are so grateful for this experience on the last leg of our honeymoon. HIGHLY recommend. Absolutely incredible.

This is it.

It is the place that as many time you will visit it, you will never get tired of it. It is simply a magnificent place, which has the Tuscany and the elegance charm, which is simply can’t be imagined, unless you visit it. The setting, the building, the rooms and the new outside bar, all complementing each other. If you travel in this part of Tuscany this place is a must, and if you don’t change your plans and go there, you will never regret it.
