"The height of luxury" at an internationally acclaimed, 900-year-old castle, with a suite option and more

The Lowdown

Place yourself in the company of Sienese and French nobility at a 900-year-old castle in Tuscany’s Porrona. Set within the tiny village’s medieval walls, this dignified property served as the private home of many storied families and individuals before transforming into a hotel that the Daily Mail described as “the height of luxury.” Beautifully restored, with the original terra cotta, red brick and stone preserved, now-Castel Porrona Relais continues to provide a stay worthy of a European aristocrat.
Tuscan country style informs the sumptuous accommodations, which are complete with antiques and elegant fabrics, including custom trims. There’s a Moroccan-inspired spa these days, too, which boasts a hammam and sauna and uses Tuscan wine and olive oil in its indulgent treatments – not to mention its wine-therapy baths. You can also enjoy the fitness center, visit the restaurant, or take a dip in the outdoor pool. Or, embark on a concierge-organized Montalcino wine tasting or Florence outing – if you can tear yourself away from the breathtaking views.

Each of the 25 rooms, apartments and suites is rich in designer detailing, from elaborate wall coverings to interesting objects d’art. Overlooking the village of Porrona, the Deluxe Room has exposed wooden beams and a four-poster bed and measures between 301 to 344 sq. ft. Measuring up to 538 sq. ft., the larger Executive suite has a sizeable living area, a four-poster bed or mezzanine, panoramic country views and an en-suite bathroom with double spa tub.
Amenities- Air conditioning- Flat-screen TV with media set- Complimentary Wi-Fi- Beauty amenities- Hair dryer- Minibar- Coffee machine

For discerning gourmands, signature restaurant Il Chiostro serves reinterpreted Tuscan cuisine, created with fresh and locally-sourced ingredients. Expect regional specialties and exquisite mains paired with fine Italian wines. The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner daily and offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

Those seeking a mind-body reboot will adore Agua SPA, a luxurious pampering oasis complete with a Moroccan-inspired hammam, sauna and wine-therapy baths. There are also several treatment rooms for signature massages and wellness rituals using products made from Tuscan olive oils and wines.

In Italy’s Tuscan hills, surrounded by swathes of olive groves, cypress trees, sunflower fields and vineyards, you’ll be within easy reach of the province’s art-rich cities, filled with Renaissance masterpieces and great wine. Castel Porrona Relais is within driving distance of Siena, Montalcino, the hot springs of Saturnia, Maremma National Park and the glamorous coastal town of Punta Ala. Further afield, must-dos include marveling at Pisa’s iconic Leaning Tower and gazing on paintings at the Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence – both cities are about two hours away by car.

I travel hundreds of thousands of miles a year and this is one of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed. The restored castle is immaculate with all the amenities, but lots of 12th century character. Super nice staff. Gorgeous surroundings. This is a place to get away, not to have a bustling tourist villageS

Brilliant Stay

My husband and I decided to have a couple of nights at this beautiful accomodation- turned out to be a lovely break on our Italy trip. We enjoyed the spa for an afternoon (unfortunately a very cold, windy two days impacted on our outdoor pool time!), wine tour of the Moltacino area and absolutely enjoyed thoroughly our meals at the restaurant there. We had a lunch and two dinners and the food was perfect! The service matched the perfection of the food. We both thought the food at the restaurant was the highlight of our trip so far.
The room was spacious with a nice layout. Great view over the grounds in the castle.
Loved it all!

Castel Porrona is the perfect place to live the Tuscan hospitality. Aldo and his team are always over reaching our expectations. We traveled a lot around the word but this place definitely worth every penny!!!! Dont expect anything than the best!

This is not a 5 star resort

This hotel was a huge disappointment, and I hope this review can help others avoid making the mistake of staying here. As many others have stated, the air conditioning was a huge problem. The AC units in each room just did not work, and as there are only tiny windows in each room (old castle) it is impossible to get any fresh air/breeze. We also had several other issues - our initial room reeked of smoke. The walls are covered in fabric, which must absorb smells and make this issue worse. When the problem was first brought to the staffs attention the solution was to "air out" the room, which did not work. After an unpleasant night we were moved to a different room which did not smell, but when trying to take a shower we discovered there was no hot water. The room they changed us to was an upgraded room which we didnt really care about - we just wanted a room that didnt smell and had working hot water/AC! They were able to fix the hot water issue within about 5 hours, but it was still a pretty big inconvenience for a '5 star' facility. Dinner was mediocre at best (and overpriced). The only thing I can compliment is the wonderful pastry chef. The breakfast pastries were excellent.

Luxury Hotel, amazing SPA, great food

I have been in Castel Porrona with my wife for a lovely weekend, the place is very beautiful, you can feel the history everywhere around you.
Rooms are very big and well decorated with modern amenities.
We liked a lot the beautiful spa, spending all day between sauna, massages and the internal heated pool.
Dining in the restaurant was a great experience, you can choose inside restaurant, more elegant, or the open air patio. You can find easier BIO preparation or gourmet food at the same time.
Good wine list and excellent house wine.
We look forward to retourn asap
