Follow in the footsteps of the illustrious young Queen Victoria with a stay at Albion House – a splendid Georgian landmark perched atop Ramsgate’s East Cliff. With commanding views over the Royal Harbour, Bursting with more than 200 years of history, the property was recently restored to its former Regency glory and retains many original features – from its intricate cornices to its grand sash windows.
Take sumptuous afternoon tea, sip a coffee or enjoy something stronger in the high-ceilinged Town Bar, where dark olive walls set off framed artworks with striking effect. The light-filled dining rooms make the perfect setting for sampling some of the region’s famous seafood. Those looking for a peaceful getaway will find Albion House an excellent and stylish choice – if you needed any more proof of that, this hideaway was recommended by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the best hotels for a British weekend break and it’s now positioned as Ramsgate’s number one hotel on TripAdvisor.
How to Get There
The expectation was great when we arrived for a one night stay with dinner and breakfast at the Albion House – which we had visited 3 years or so ago- but now we find it rated as No1 Ramsgate hotel (according to TA) and Im sure I saw somewhere a boast that it was No1 in Kent!!
As we checked out this morning our great expectations unhappily not realised ... with the thoughts of our departing breakfast foremost in our minds. The component parts of Breakfast offered at the Albion House was granola followed by a number of cooked choices. I opted for simplicity itself in 2 eggs, sunny side up on toast but the first 2 turned up like bullets and the replacements were exactly the same. I ate the toast.
Yes, we had a marble bathroom, YES IT WAS A COMFY BED but the food - and not just the disappointing breakfast - was a little questionable, staff seemed a bit under trained and with the notable exception of our waiter in the restaurant Sunday evening the place seemed to be a little too amateurish and dare I say it, a little too much like the previous management. Surely this cannot be the best Ramsgate has to offer?
I do not like to give negative feedback, but needs must where it is due.
If you are thinking of making a booking then I would strongly advise you to get it in writing.
We made a booking months in advance for a party of 48 people to use the bar area for the evening and paid a £200 deposit.
However 3 weeks before the event after We had sent all the invites out and made arrangements for a pianist to play, they contacted me via email to say that they have moved our event to another room in the hotel, which was unsuitable for our guests, when I questioned why they were moving us, we was told that the hotel had made changes and that was all they could offer us.
Needless to say we were not happy and had to find alternative event hire, which involved a lot of ringing around other venues as most were booked up for Christmas.
We had to have new invites made for our guests and ended up paying a lot more money for the new venue.
We have been let down really badly, and for that reason we will not be using or recommending this venue.
Our guests have been notified of the circumstances of the cancellation.
Beautiful room with stunning views. Felt welcomed from the moment we set foot in the Albion. Really helpful receptionist. We had booked Townleys on the same night as an 18th birthday but the Albion had set up the restaurant in their lounge and you wouldn't have known the difference. Breakfast was in the Townley restaurant which was beautiful. The whole hotel is beautifully restored and even if you don't stay at the hotel go for brunch.
What a great find! We were looking for a luxury hotel within easy reach of Sandwich, Deal and North Foreland golf clubs and the only hotel that matched this description in our online search, was Albion House. So we went to have a look before committing to stay. We walked through the front door into reception and were welcomed by a roaring log fire and an equally warm host, hotel owner, Ben. He gave us a tour of the hotel and showed us some rooms and we were sold! It truly is luxurious, the attention to detail throughout is incredible. We stayed for two nights in Room 3, Little Victoria, which had two large windows with great views across Ramsgate harbour and out to sea. The room was super comfortable; we felt very much at home. The best bed and linen you'll find anywhere, lovely Carrara marble clad bathroom with bath, shower and Georgian taps and accessories. The bathroom came with The White House Company products and towelling robes. A varied breakfast menu and excellent coffee. Really nice attentive, yet laid back staff. We shall return and thoroughly recommend the hotel to anyone who is as discerning as we are!
As soon as you walk into this restaurant the ambiance surrounds you. Twinkling lights and arranged pictures made for lovely surroundings.
A lovely Italian waiter served us had good knowledge of the wines and was also able to recommend a wonderful red wine to accompany our meal.
We will definitely be returning soon.
