Plush mountain retreat with a top-notch spa and a restaurant with knockout views in the green heart of northern Greece

The Lowdown

Snowcapped mountains and pine forests probably aren’t the first things that spring to mind when you picture Greece. But a stay at the Grand Forest Metsovo, a luxe hillside hideaway with views of the Pindos Mountains, puts the spotlight on northern Greece’s natural beauty. The hotel is geared up to welcome visitors in from the great outdoors year-round — whether they have been skiing, hiking or just taking in the mountain air. The decor throughout is contemporary, with homey touches — a plaid blanket here, a warm rug there — and the restaurant keeps things cozy with a roaring fire and traditional menu. The spa features indoor and outdoor panoramic pools, a hot tub and a sauna, and the guestrooms are decked out with wooden floors and dark wood furnishings and most come with mountain-view balconies, controllable heating, hot drink facilities and free WiFi.

In the Area

In summer, hike through the forest (the hotel can organize a picnic) or head out onto the scenic mountain roads to visit Meteora, less than an hour away. A group of Greek Orthodox monasteries were built here in the 14th century on natural sandstone towers. Some are still standing, and the site has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. There are also a handful of small ski resorts within easy reach of the hotel, including the newly opened Anilio Ski Resort, just 10 minutes away. There’s a tobogganing slope at the hotel, too.

A World Class Hotel in the Mountains

We stopped in Metsovo on the way to Meteora, but had we known how lovely the Grand Forest Hotel was, we would have planned to spend more time. We had a gorgeous panoramic view from our terrace, where I spent time at night gazing at the full panoply of stars. No light pollution!! Our room (a suite, actually) was large and well-appointed, the hotel's pool was not quite Olympic sized (but big enough) - the only drawback was that it was quite cold, the food in the restaurant was absolutely delicious (probably the most extensive breakfast buffet on our three week trip - full of local treats, gorgeous fruit, charcuterie, and other delights), and the staff was just wonderful. We also ate dinner in the hotel restaurant and were thrilled with the quality of the food and wine. When I raved about a particularly delicious tomato salsa served with the local cheese at dinner, I was told that although the hotel does not sell it in the gift shop, the chef kindly packaged some in jars for me to take along with me. This is caring, attentive customer service! Even the gift shop was special - with many very high quality, unique, locally designed and fabricated goods. This is a stop worth taking seriously!!

Horrible hospitality

We've been coming to Metsovo for years and the Grand Forest has become a tradition for a great view while enjoying some drinks and food. We were totally taken aback and appalled to be turned away today because we were not hotel patrons. Bad business decision. As a family of 4 we probably would have spent more money there in a short afternoon than renting a review. Great past memories, but I will not be staying here ever nor recommending this place!

Where is Greek hospitality?

Friends from Metsovo suggested the place for a coffee to enjoy the view ! ( they had been there a few times) . After a long drive ,the lady at the door denied us access as “ they do not serve coffee to non- hotel residents “ ????????. What an attitude she had as well !!!
