Overview

Plush mountain retreat with a top-notch spa and a restaurant with knockout views in the green heart of northern Greece

The Lowdown

Snowcapped mountains and pine forests probably aren’t the first things that spring to mind when you picture Greece. But a stay at the Grand Forest Metsovo, a luxe hillside hideaway with views of the Pindos Mountains, puts the spotlight on northern Greece’s natural beauty. The hotel is geared up to welcome visitors in from the great outdoors year-round — whether they have been skiing, hiking or just taking in the mountain air. The decor throughout is contemporary, with homey touches — a plaid blanket here, a warm rug there — and the restaurant keeps things cozy with a roaring fire and traditional menu. The spa features indoor and outdoor panoramic pools, a hot tub and a sauna, and the guestrooms are decked out with wooden floors and dark wood furnishings and most come with mountain-view balconies, controllable heating, hot drink facilities and free WiFi.

In the Area

In summer, hike through the forest (the hotel can organize a picnic) or head out onto the scenic mountain roads to visit Meteora, less than an hour away. A group of Greek Orthodox monasteries were built here in the 14th century on natural sandstone towers. Some are still standing, and the site has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. There are also a handful of small ski resorts within easy reach of the hotel, including the newly opened Anilio Ski Resort, just 10 minutes away. There’s a tobogganing slope at the hotel, too.

We stayed only one night. The service is perfect from the check in threw the vale service. Large beautifly decorated rooms. Very comfortable beds. Great view from the big balcony. Excusite breakfast. Great spa.

Great Accomodation

We stayed for four nights in the forest view room. The rooms are spacious and cozy. We were there during some rainy weather and for some reason we weren’t allowed to use the fire place, but they gave us some pretend fire starter stuff that burned in the fire place for a few hours. It would be even cosier when you can have a fire burning. The menu dinner food was absolutely outstanding!! Starters, mains and desert were all so so tasty. I’d recommend the mushroom risotto, the mushroom soup and the stuffed pork. The breakfast wasn’t as good as the dinner, but the dishes were still nice, with a nice variety and generous portions.

On our first day we went to Metsovo and checked out the town square, then took a drive around the lake. On our second day we took the 6km Ursa trail hike back to Metsovo to have lunch and then got a taxi back because it started raining a bit to much. On our last day we drove to Meteora, which was absolutely amazing.

Pros
Amazing view of the mountains
Friendly staff
This is a retreat resort. Good if you are willing to limit outings, as closest village is 20 min by car up a winding road
Good selection of spa treatments as well as jacuzzi etc.
Bathroom is spacious with double sinks and separate shower/bathtub

Cons
Rooms are spread out, if you are carrying heavy luggage or ski equipment daily, this isn't the best arrangement. Request a room with easy access to the parking lot
Restaurant has a very limited selection of local dishes. Also the fondue that appears on brochure photos isn't on the menu.
Rooms contain no local decorative elements, as there is in the other areas of the property.
Rooms have an automatic coffee machine, but it isn't a Nespresso. This is of course a personal preference, but is now pretty much the de facto standard
No easy HDMI port/cable to connect laptop to TV. Also pretty much standard nowadays

Best choice in the area

Very nice hotel situated up a hill with great views to Metsovo village. Facilities are great, well maintained and functional. Rooms are of appropriate size, very clean and very nicely decorated. We have tried the restaurant which is quite good, as well as the spa facilities. Massage service was of top quality. The pool, hot tub, sauna can easily get crowded. Fireplaces in the lobby and in the room are not functioning very well, creating a smoky environment, maybe due to windy conditions so even if you get a room with a fireplace you are not really going to use it. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. In general, it is highly recommended.
