Spacious rooms with Jacuzzi tubs are hidden in tropical gardens at this intimate retreat on Sri Lanka's west coast
Set in eight and a half acres of lush, well-manicured gardens, Cocoon Resort & Villas is a tropical hideaway 65 miles south of Colombo. A short tuk-tuk ride from Induruwa beach and the water sports paradise of Bentota, this intimate resort is home to just 16 suites and 10 luxe villas, all with plush kingsize beds and Jacuzzis. The palatial reception pavilion, with its peaked ceilings and large columns, sets a relaxing vibe that resonates throughout this tranquil retreat.
Bed and Bath
A leisurely golf cart ride leads guests to their accommodations. The 16 spacious Silk suites are decorated with locally made furniture and bright fabrics covering the kingsize beds. Suites are air conditioned (essential in these parts), and each comes fully loaded with an iPod docking station, a flat-screen TV and a Jacuzzi in the bathroom, which is stocked with ayurvedic amenities in cute ceramic tubs. The 10 villas all have peaked wood-paneled ceilings, kingsize beds and Jacuzzis. Some feature a private pool and sundeck with loungers.
Most guests dine at the resort, as the neighboring towns don’t offer much in the way of cuisine. Khana Pina is the main restaurant and serves an excellent array of Indian fare; the tandoor dishes are particularly good, cooked in front of guests in a special oven. The resort’s spa, “the Bath,” specializes in ayurvedic massage techniques using local herbs and oils. For sun seekers, Cocoon’s lovely pool is lined with chunky daybeds, and for more active types there's a fitness center, table tennis and bikes to rent.
In the Area
Head to nearby Bentota to try your hand at all kinds of water sports, including waterskiing and surfing. The city of Galle, around an hour's drive to the south, is a charming mix of Portuguese, Dutch and British architecture and is perfect for a culture fix. Watching the sun set from the Dutch Fort alone is worth the drive. For nature fans, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is home to a herd of about 60 pachyderms.
