On Bali’s southern coast, the Maya Loka is a totally private enclave with just 13 thatch-roofed villas. The secluded complex fuses modern details, including private swimming pools, with design that blends in with the surrounding tropical landscape, thanks to open floor plans, a restaurant that overlooks green rice paddies, and paths made of river stones. Close to lively Seminyak but just far enough to feel apart, the property attracts a diverse crowd that includes surfers, an international set drawn here by volcanoes and white sand beaches, and expats from around the globe who never quite got around to going home.
Bed and Bath
Each of the villas feels like a getaway unto itself, with enormous carved wood doors (secured with antique iron padlocks) that open onto soaring thatch-roofed living spaces and one or two bedrooms. The secluded plunge pools come with large terraces and chunky daybeds. The indoor-outdoor bathrooms have rain showers and huge rose petal–filled tubs. All villas offer standard conveniences such as WiFi, satellite television (plus a daily newspaper) and air conditioning.
In the evening the restaurant turns out Indonesian specialties such as gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce) and nasi goreng (prawns and egg flavored with tamarind). For those who prefer not to venture far, there are in-room spa treatments (think coconut and chocolate scrubs, aromatherapy and acupressure massages). And Seminyak has lots of European-style shopping and restaurant options. Or the staff can arrange a car to the town of Ubud, around an hour’s drive north, which is a popular wellness and yoga destination. But there’s no real need to leave the property; the focus here is on relaxation, and it doesn’t take long to totally — and blissfully — disconnect.
In the Area
Don’t miss the sacred monkeys and the Balinese tribal fire dance rites at the nearby cliffside Uluwatu temple. No trip to Bali is complete without an afternoon in the village of Ubud, about an hour away. You’ll find boutiques and painters’ studios, as well as locally made handicrafts and unique gifts at the Pasar Seni market. The resort offers wonderful dining options, but if you’re headed off-site, try one of these: Sarong is elegant and serves salmon betel leaf with shrimp and coriander; Sardine dishes up fresh seafood and organic vegetables from an on-site farm; and antiques shop–cum–bookstore Biku serves a peaceful high tea. The beachfront Ku De Ta in Seminyak is a happening spot to sip a lychee cocktail as the sun sets.
How to Get There
We stayed in Villa no.5 and it definitely exceeded our expectations. The staff are incredibly accommodating and polite, providing us with helpful information throughout our whole stay. All issues they resolved immediately (issues being taking away breakfast and lighting mosquito coils etc) so hardly issues! They cleaned and swept the pool area daily, as well as tidying the bathroom, towels and bedding etc. This was done whilst you were out of the villa as to not disturb you. Pool is beautiful and bigger than the pictures look!
Bugs/mosquitos were minimal if any, every evening they lit mosquito coils and you are always provided with plugs, spray and lotion. For someone who always gets bitten... I haven’t got a single bite on this trip.
For us the location was perfect - bars and restaurants only being a short five minute walk down the road. As well as the beach only being a 10 minute walk away in the opposite direction. Staff were always interested in what you were up to during that day as to help you book taxis/offer advice on places/inform you of how much money things should cost. We found this very helpful as we had more of an understanding on what to look out for etc. I felt very safe knowing I had the villa and staff to fall back on without getting “ripped off” or “scammed”.
Breakfast was lovely and set up for you daily, you order it the day before and there is a variety of options you can chose from. All food is of great quality and the accommodate amends and allergies etc.
We literally don’t have a bad word to say about our stay here - we are hoping to have money left over so we can tip the staff as they are truly exceptional!
We stayed in the Honeymoon Villa, no 7 of 10 villas at Mayaloka and could not be happier. The level of professionalism and hospitality shown by all staff has been outstanding. The many small touches of service were greatly appreciated like evening turndown service that included the lighting of insect coils and tea light lanterns around the pool and walkway. The scented flowers at the sink of the outdoor bathroom was another.
Our airport pickup went smoothly with a well presented driver and vehicle. As we set off, we were offered a refreshing scented cool towel and water. At our request, he even found a reputable money changer enroute to the villa.
The villa grounds are expansive, very private and well kept, as is the pool that receives plenty of sunlight throughout the day, as well as a daily cleanup of frangipani flowers. The sound of running water from the water feature at one end created a tranquil ambiance.
The included breakfast is brought to the villa at a time chosen by us and is set out on the table in the pavilion - another very nice touch. The Balinese breakfast was our favourite.
The location of Mayaloka just north of the central Seminyak area meant that we experienced a more authentic Balinese holiday. Away from the westernized and overpriced cafes and restaurants, we found local Warungs and businesses to support that offered amazing food and flavours at very reasonable prices. Warung Jembung across the road was a standout.
We cannot recommend Mayaloka Villas highly enough. Thank you for a truly enjoyable and relaxing stay.
We have just returned from an 8 night stay at Mayaloka Villas. The villas are beautifully appointed with a generous size pool. The staff were very attentive and very helpful, we required an extra night accomodation and a late check out of 6pm on our last day but our villa was fully booked so we were offered the honeymoon villa for a very reasonable price and free use of the 4 bedroom villa for our late check out. The Villas are located a short cab ride to the heart of Seminyak and there are also many restaurants within walking distance and the beach a 10 minute walk. We highly recommend staying at this lovely resort!
