Contemporary stay full of funky commissioned art, with a colorful mixology lounge, in the heart of downtown Indy
Constructed in January 2013, the Alexander is Indy’s first destination hotel for locals and travelers alike. The open, modern lobby is filled with innovative and whimsical public art displays curated by the Indianapolis Museum of Art: a flock of flying birds made from old vinyl records, a portrait created from 3,840 combs, a laser-cut stainless steel slab of words to greet you as you get off the elevator. Several seating areas beckon you with clean-lined chairs and sofas placed on colorful rugs on top of rich brown hardwood floors. The stylish and hip cocktail lounge, Plat 99, is a stunner designed by Cuban-born artist Jorge Pardo, complete with Mexican tiles, 99 colorful glass lamps and views of downtown and Lucas Oil Field just beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Bed and Bath
The 157 guestrooms continue the modern, clean aesthetic with large windows, pops of color and original eye-catching art. A rich brown hardwood floor, with carpeting by the bed, and glass-topped shelves for nightstands add to the modern vibe. The minibar is stocked with such drinks as coconut water, V8 and Jones soda, or you can brew yourself a cup of coffee with the Keurig coffeemaker. Relax and watch the 42-inch flat-screen TV or get down to business at the desk, which has a connectivity panel and an ergonomic leather chair. The bathroom has a white walk-in shower with an adjustable ceiling-mounted rainfall showerhead, Gilchrist & Soames bath products and plush white towels. All rooms have crisp white bedding; King rooms offer California Kings — good for NBA players when they’re in town, as the Pacers’ arena is just a block away.
Caleb France is the 30-year-old chef/owner of Cerulean, the contemporary restaurant on the hotel’s ground floor. He brings to life a menu of fresh ingredients and inventive flavors, including an Indiana cheese board, duck pastrami, Zinfandel scallops and sable with sage pappardelle — all great for sharing. The space is clean and minimal and has a great view of the city, as well as a quirky wooden “bird's nest” area in the center of the dining room. Back up in the hotel lobby is Plat 99, the Alexander’s trendy mixology lounge. Designed by internationally acclaimed Cuban-born artist Jorge Pardo, Plat 99 is both a lounge and a work of art. Sit on contemporary couches, outside on the roof deck or at the wraparound bar, which is set on handcrafted Mexican tiles underneath 99 striking glass lamps. Head mixologist Michael Gray offers up a fun cocktail menu timeline, with handcrafted drinks from 1850 to the present day (e.g., 1910’s Sloe Gin Fizz and 1951’s Diamondback). Delightful small dishes include everything from a braised pork belly slider to a local charcuterie board.
In the Area
Located in the new CityWay development in the wholesale district downtown, rhe Alexander is steps away from Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Colts, and Banker’s Life Fieldhouse, where you can catch concerts, performances and other sporting events. Rent one of the hotel bicycles and hit the city's new $60 million Cultural Trail recreation path, which ribbons past every downtown attraction and through most neighborhoods, including the cute shops on Mass Ave. and the quirky southside neighborhood of Fountain Square. Top off the day at restaurants like contemporary Italian Blue Beard, which has a daily-changing menu, or Libertine, for gastropub fare such as octopus or a bacon flight, and award-winning cocktails.
