Overlooking Kerala’s Vembanad Lake, the Vivanta by Taj Kumarakom is housed in a colonial bungalow built by English missionary Henry Baker in the late 19th century. Admire the Old World charm in a Heritage Room (wooden floors, beam ceilings), see the lake from your private balcony in a Deluxe Allure Villa, or take a dip in your own plunge pool in a Premium Temptation Villa. When you’re not relaxing in the property’s peaceful gardens or walking along the waterfront, settle in for Keralan cuisine and seafood specialties at Open, an all-day alfresco restaurant. Or you can laze by the pool or book a massage at the hotel’s spa. Parents can take advantage of on-site babysitting and book a romantic evening at Baker’s Gourmet House, where they can feast on grilled freshwater scampi and karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated and baked in a banana leaf) while watching the lagoon lit up by a thousand oil lamps — the people from the nearby village fire them up nightly.
In the Area
The hotel provides several ways to explore vast Vembanad Lake. Take in the waters on a relaxed cruise to Ayemenem, a charming backwater village. On an organized tour you’ll have panoramic views of the town, visit a local temple and enjoy a traditional sadya meal — a multidish feast typically reserved for special occasions. Rather stick to dry land? Explore the area on a nature walk into a Keralan village. You’ll see banana plantations, rice paddies and meadows full of flowers, before getting into a canoe to fish for dinner (the fresh catch can be prepared right away).
How to Get There
Excellent stay! Wonderful staffs! I lost my gold bracelet during outdoor activity. I came to know this only when i left the place. I immediately called the reception...they said "One of the staffs got it, you can come and collect"! Never excpected this level of honesty !
Stayed in TAJ Kumarakom from Nov 4 to Non 8th 2019.
There are lot of travel agents but we booked directly with Hotel.(0481 2526711).
Arrival at Kochi Airport and travel to Hotel Taj Kumarakom:
One can book for airport pick up with Hotel Taj or book at airport prepaid counter.
Located next to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and its little over 2 hours drive from Kochi airport.
It was smooth as usual. MS Priya was there at front office desk who helped us to complete check in facilities after offering us the welcome drink.
The resort takes you back to 1881 when the Baker’s family who are considered the founders of modern Kumarakom set up their residence here. The original bungalow still stands gracefully on the shore of a beautiful lagoon welcoming guests on its historical corridors while the rest of the facilities are distributed across the sprawling grounds. Its spread over 15 acres and only with 28 rooms, shows how big the property and greenish it is. As no. of rooms are less, staff will know you by face and offer the best possible personalized service.
We stayed in Premium Cottage Lagoon View for four nights with large spacious room with sit out facing the lagoon. It has all the modern amenities with the typical kerala wooden interiors
They have two restaurants Bristo and Currymeen close to each other.
Currmeen is inside the main building and Bristo is close to the lagoon with good views. Breakfast is served only in Bristo, with variety of spread. The best is filter coffee. Food is delicious.
Evening tea/coffee and local snacks at Chayakada ,on the shores of India’s longest – Vembanad lake is quite a treat.
Special Thanks to Mr Navaron , Ritesh ,Devi, and special thanks to Anulu in the Restaurant .
Lots of activities –
Every day free cruise, angling, kayaking, boat ride, rabbit feeding, duck and fish feeding, table tennis and many other activities to keep you engaged. Evening performance during dinner time is a good treat..
They made the bills ready in advance and no delay in the checkout
With a good team in the restaurant and Mr. Jacob & Ms Priya who go all the way to satisfy the customers, I would surely like to visit again.
Taj's hospitality never disappoints me - be it from the warm welcome on arrival or the excellent cuisine where everyone remembers your dietary preferences or the small things like the turn down facility at night. The food was very delicious - though the menu largely remains the same between Currymeen & Vembanad Bristo, we personally like the ambiance of the Bristo. It seemed like the word "No" did not exist in the vocabulary of the The F&M manager ( Nabaroon Dutta), Ritesh, Noel & the whole staff at Taj Kumarakom - they went through great pains to ensure all our requests were taken care of.
This resort is located next to the bird sanctuary & is teeming with wild life. My son was excited to sight a couple of Kingfisher birds, Cormorant, long tailed tyrant, tortoises, monitor lizards & the flying foxes. We also thoroughly enjoyed the various activities offered by the Muddy Boots - Zipline, kayaking, cycling, paintball & sunset cruise.
On a more personal note, I was very touched when the whole staff at Taj rallied to make us feel extra comfortable when I had car trouble on the day of departure. Special thanks to GM (Ashirbad) for personally following up with Mahindara service head on our behalf & ensuring that we were not affected by the change in plans. At that moment, Taj Kumarakom staff became more like family then hospitality staff. I will forever be grateful for the pleasant memories we carried back home & look forward to creating new ones in the near future.
