Overlooking Kerala’s Vembanad Lake, the Vivanta by Taj Kumarakom is housed in a colonial bungalow built by English missionary Henry Baker in the late 19th century. Admire the Old World charm in a Heritage Room (wooden floors, beam ceilings), see the lake from your private balcony in a Deluxe Allure Villa, or take a dip in your own plunge pool in a Premium Temptation Villa. When you’re not relaxing in the property’s peaceful gardens or walking along the waterfront, settle in for Keralan cuisine and seafood specialties at Open, an all-day alfresco restaurant. Or you can laze by the pool or book a massage at the hotel’s spa. Parents can take advantage of on-site babysitting and book a romantic evening at Baker’s Gourmet House, where they can feast on grilled freshwater scampi and karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated and baked in a banana leaf) while watching the lagoon lit up by a thousand oil lamps — the people from the nearby village fire them up nightly.
In the Area
The hotel provides several ways to explore vast Vembanad Lake. Take in the waters on a relaxed cruise to Ayemenem, a charming backwater village. On an organized tour you’ll have panoramic views of the town, visit a local temple and enjoy a traditional sadya meal — a multidish feast typically reserved for special occasions. Rather stick to dry land? Explore the area on a nature walk into a Keralan village. You’ll see banana plantations, rice paddies and meadows full of flowers, before getting into a canoe to fish for dinner (the fresh catch can be prepared right away).
How to Get There
Came her with my mother. Was a spectacular location and great hospitality provided by all. Rooms are spacious and luxurious. Staff are always on hand to help. Would come again for sure and recommend to others as well.
Amazing property, beautiful rooms and cottages, excellent hospitality and delicious food. The staff was very courteous. Perfect location and facilities within the resort. All in all an amazing experience. Highly recommended
Taj brings in certain level of quality, service and experience. we stayed for 3 Nights and mostly our experience was good.
Its a lovely property, the cottage we stayed opens up to the lagoon where you can see plenty of birds through out the day. we got an upgrade in the room which was quite a delight.
Rooms towards West are the best ones and deserve a selection over the basic ones
The evening ride to backwater and sunset is a delight. Complementary tea session at 4 PM is a charm
Special thanks to Ravindra, Devi , Rithesh & Datta who took lot of personal interest in our well being
What could Improve
1) Kids get bored as activity levels for them are pretty limited. The activity area is in bad shape,
2) Food Menu needs to be expanded for Vegetarian options. Portion size are way too big for kids and there is lot of wastage
3) there is only 1 operational buggy car and that is a bit annoying as waiting time is high.
A small miss was that despite mentioning and asking for Anniversary celebration and a cake the Hotel completely forgot about it. There was no cake despite the discussions. Maybe a casual miss, cant hold much against them.
Overall, a very good property, and highly recommended in this part of India
A wealthy fellow Mr. Baker shifted out from India and handed his sprawling property to Taj and its a treat to see what they made it into.
LOCATION: Its just by the backwaters. If you look at the map available in the hotel, it is almost like an island with small canal on 3 sides of the property and backwaters on one. It is one of the largest properties. Kumarakoum is a small village so there is nothing else to do other then relax in your property.
ROOMS: The resort has various categories of rooms. We chose the base one - heritage rooms. The heritage rooms we were told are actually the oldest rooms and in the building with the Baker family said. Everything else in the property was constructed by Taj Hotels but this building was only renovated. There are only 3 heritage rooms and we occupied two. These rooms are huge with very high ceiling. A small sit out area outside the room with a view of the property is good. Washrooms could have been renovated a little more - but with the construction dating back to a century - may it is difficult. Other rooms would obviously be better - but they were just by the lake which could also mean more mosquitoes and insects and also a good walk every time you wanted to head to the restaurant. Of course a buggy would pick you if needed. Taj hotels use all possible Tata Products. Crockery was Tata Ceramics, DTH was Tata Sky, AC was Voltas and Tea was Tetley. Wonder why water was Aquafina and not Himalayan? :P
FOOD & SERVICE: Taj properties always have a higher rating and expectation in terms of service and this place did not disappoint. All staff members from check in, managers, restaurant staff and chef were friendly and absolutely polite and good to talk to. My mother's birthday was pre informed to the resort to seek reservation and a note was taken with a cake. Added quite a lot to the celebration. The Jiva Spa in the resort was really nice as well. Food was tasty all the time and chef personally visited tables to check if any special needs were there. When we asked for a special meal for our baby - it was nice to see how involved the staff got to the details to make it. They made it for the first time and made it really nice.
This place has hosted the PM and President of India so one can imagine how beautiful it is. Our former PM even made this resort as temporary office. Taj did not dissapoint me one bit.
Would highly recommend the resort. We had amazing time. The resort has so many activities to engage guest of all age groups. I can stay there for 10 days and not get tired. Resort is also Photographers delight.
