Charming 28-room retreat housed in a colonial bungalow on the banks of Kerala's Vembanad Lake

The Lowdown

Overlooking Kerala’s Vembanad Lake, the Vivanta by Taj Kumarakom is housed in a colonial bungalow built by English missionary Henry Baker in the late 19th century. Admire the Old World charm in a Heritage Room (wooden floors, beam ceilings), see the lake from your private balcony in a Deluxe Allure Villa, or take a dip in your own plunge pool in a Premium Temptation Villa. When you’re not relaxing in the property’s peaceful gardens or walking along the waterfront, settle in for Keralan cuisine and seafood specialties at Open, an all-day alfresco restaurant. Or you can laze by the pool or book a massage at the hotel’s spa. Parents can take advantage of on-site babysitting and book a romantic evening at Baker’s Gourmet House, where they can feast on grilled freshwater scampi and karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated and baked in a banana leaf) while watching the lagoon lit up by a thousand oil lamps — the people from the nearby village fire them up nightly.

In the Area

The hotel provides several ways to explore vast Vembanad Lake. Take in the waters on a relaxed cruise to Ayemenem, a charming backwater village. On an organized tour you’ll have panoramic views of the town, visit a local temple and enjoy a traditional sadya meal — a multidish feast typically reserved for special occasions. Rather stick to dry land? Explore the area on a nature walk into a Keralan village. You’ll see banana plantations, rice paddies and meadows full of flowers, before getting into a canoe to fish for dinner (the fresh catch can be prepared right away).

Beautiful Property with Outstanding Hospitality
Reviewed 3 days ago

Spent 1 night in this serene property while touring Kerala. Loved every second of our stay in this exquisite property with overtly warm people who will ensure you have an amazing stay.
Loved the way they treat their guests especially the entire F&B team which I think was lead by Mr Nabarun. Mr Ravindran, Mrs Priya all went out of way to ensure comfortable stay for their guests.
Chaikada and boat ride in lake was really enjoyable. Monsoon made the stay all the more enjoyable and surreal.

Service Excellent, Facilities need some work
Reviewed 7 days ago

Overall our experience was excellent, thanks to the staff. They arranged a houseboat for a 4 hr trip, we will cherish that experience. Whole staff worked very hard to make our stay a pleasurable one. Property needs some upkeep, we got outside chairs which need upholstery work, room lock was broken and intercom did not work. They changed our room quickly, next room was ok. It is my feeling that this place doesn’t live up to Taj brand and value provided does not match the cost.

Exotic Trip to God's Own Country -- Majestic Kerala
Reviewed 1 week ago

It was our visit to God's own country Kerala. It was a wonderful route from Kochi Airport to Kumarakom.
I was just amazed to see the Taj Kumarakom property. At the outset, we were greeted with a very warm welcome by Mrs. Priya, with whom we had discussed and finalised our bookings. We were offered delicious coconut water. Mrs. Priya was polite and courteous and she took us on a guided tour of the Taj property before our rooms were assigned to us.

We were delighted to find that a cottage was dedicated to us with two bedrooms and a lovely view of the lake.

Our stay was for 5 days. The view around us was very exotic and scenic. Amidst the rain showers, it was a timsle of our life at Taj.

Another pleasant surprise awaited for us in a form of a night cruise on a house boat. We first thought it to be a shared houseboat but beyond our expectations, it was a dedicated houseboat for us with two air-conditioned bedrooms with a lobby and roof top. Above all breakfast, lunch and dinner were customised for us and they were the ultimate.

We look forward to come here again to have the same hospitality esp the bird feeding and fish feeding with Mr Ravindran from the Taj and our lovely hosts Mrs Priya. The food would not have been more exotic without the support of Mr Nabarun, Ms Devi , Ms Saraswati, Mr Surjit, Mr. Suresh, Mr. Ritesh and entire F&B team who helped us with customised lunch and dinner. We even learned a method to feed the fishes by Mr Ravindran, which we will never forget, as we did it ourselves later.

We would also like to compliment the Chef and his team for the wonderful food we had and not to miss the tasty "Chaikada"

I am definitely going to come again with my family.

Thanks you Mrs. Priya once again !!

Beautiful resort and Amazing staff
Reviewed 1 week ago

The resort was beautiful and maintained well. Adjacent to the bird sanctuary with migrating birds. Kids activities and sunset boat rides for all guests. We were upgraded to a pool villa which was awesome. My parents and my daughter enjoyed the stay. The staff is extra attentive and very efficient. Taj hospitality is difficult to match. Thanks to the manager of the property who also came to bid good bye to us to the car and gave us mangoes from the resort. Great experience although the food was disappointing. Breakfast was a very small spread too.

Beautiful property & outstanding hospitality

Its a lovely property, the cottage we stayed opens up to the lagoon where you can see plenty of birds through out the day. In evening one can take a complementary boat ride in the lake which was a good experience. They also organize walking tour for bird watching in next door bird sanctuary in mornings.
The best part about this place is staff, every single person tries his/her best to make your stay as comfortable as possible, Anand, Suresh, Ravindra, thankyou for making our stay memorable.

Overall, great rooms, good food and outstanding hospitality.
