How to Get There
First let me say that this is a nice, impressive hotel with a nice front desk, restaurant and lounge scene. My kids enjoyed the pool, hot tub and ping pong. We stayed in a recently renovated room and while it was stylish and hip, it was so dark and depressing! Horrible lighting in the rooms and even worse in the bathroom. The bathrooms desperately need sconces around the illuminated mirrors. Horrible lighting for putting on makeup or shaving. Barn door to bathroom was kind of loud and annoying too. Beds were comfortable though. We moved to a hotel downtown for the second part of our stay in Chicago and were so happy to be in a room where we could see again.
I really enjoyed this hotel even though it's not what I would usually choose. We were in town for a family event. Great rates, large room, comfortable beds, very clean. Very friendly staff. We made extensive use of the free shuttle, which was very convenient. Not a lot to walk to, but did find some very good for and you can walk in the back entrance of the Botanic Garden, spend a few hours walking up to the front, and then get picked up.
I am usually not hard to please, but the new room design is bad. Entry: Dark brown and gray. Only light switch is for entry. No wall switches or visible switches for lamps, ambient lights, coffee maker shelf etc. Turns out these all have 1/2 inch black rocker switches on middle of black backgrounds. Refrigerator hidden behind a black wire screen with no handle or indication of how to open. Bathroom? Sliding door has no privacy latch. Only light is ambient around mirror. No good for makeup. Hair dryer...yes if you can find the black bag hidden on the black low shelf. Toilet holder verticle so paper drapes on floor. TV huge flat screen, but no guide function or list of channels in the room. Bedside table between two queen beds. No table for outside sides. Center reading lights ineffective. Headboard has outer handles that become reading lights if you can figure them out. Iron cord so short you have to stick ironing board into bathroom to use. garment closet light switch works only if left door is open. Finally, heater AC control has a single button that if pushed on its right side works fan and pushed on the left side (yes, a single button) shifts from heat to AC I hear these switches are used in China. Honestly, the list of design flaws goes on, but hotel should have done one room and had a focus group walk through.
Stayed at this hotel for one night. I was given the updated room. Check-in was smooth and fast. The front desk staff seemed courteous and welcoming. The updated rooms are spacious, internet was fast and the bathrooms looked modern. The club lounge is smaller compared to the other Marriott brands. Elizabeth at the club lounge was awesome and she takes good care of her guests. If you would like to run or walk outdoors, there are sidewalks in the neighborhood. If you walked about a quarter mile on the Skokie Blvd., you will have access to trails. The hotel is about 20mnts. drive to the O’Hare airport. Peeve: The air conditioner/fan in the room was very loud. Something should be done to make it a little quieter while running. Overall a very pleasant experience.
My wife and I stayed at the hotel this past weekend. The front desk staff, Ramina, Katia and Everline were extremely friendly and welcoming not just upon checking-in, but throughout our entire stay at the hotel. Ramina, Katia and Everline truly went above and beyond in making our stay such a wonderful experience!
