How to Get There
What can I say. Have vast experience with the W and this was by far, Extremely Disappointing. But first, on a positive note, the gym was nice and clean and modern. Check in and check out was efficient and the bar staff was amazing at the central lobby bar....particularly Katrina from Russia. She was just awesome. And the drinks were good. But the stay was not a good experience. The room was small and Dorm-like in nature. The bathroom was subpar: Low water pressure, sink was smaller than a little bar sink and the toilet had water pressure issues. Supplies of soap were hard to come by. Even worse: Management was NON RESPONSIVE to a major cleaning service issue on the night of Friday August 17 2018. After a long day away for a wedding dress rehearsal function, we were so looking forward to coming back to a cleaned up room. The room had not been touched at all. This was even after REQUESTING it to be serviced when we noticed after 4pm that it was not touched. When calling to speak to someone regarding this complaint, the man serving as management that evening continued to say he had nothing to offer at all and was arrogant at best. His behavior alone was enough to cause additional upset. I have written MANY reviews and travel frequently and am not one to ever complain truly. And this just by far set us back on our heels because of the LACK of RESPONSE from management, which would cause me to hesitate to ever return to the W, despite the great reception at check in and the service at the bar.
I booked here thinking that like all W hotels, I would have my favorite type of hotel in Chicago. I was wrong. My friend told me to stay at Lakefront location but it was fully booked and now I know why. Do NOT expect the usual W hotel experience at this downtown location, nor the usual amenities. Very sparse. Also, I had to change rooms 3 times, due to water in shower not running, then 2nd room smelled like kitty litter, thankfully the 3rd room for my last night was upgraded to a suite by manager. The bathrooms are incredibly basic even in the suite! It’s a very small hotel surprisingly given the price, and really not a great place to hang out or meet people. The only thing nice was the small lobby bar, but not a lot of food choices. On a positive note, Eden from Concierge was very helpful in prebooking me a boat tour, which I was grateful for. I will simply never return to this location.
It is a good downtown hotel. It doesn’t have quite the same feel as other W Hotels, but, that makes this property more readily accessible to a wider audience (aka. More ‘family friendly’). I forgot how much I love Bliss Spa products...

Do NOT stay here! We spent two nights in our room before we realized there was a rotten mold-covered plum under the club chair. The room temp was cold so it had obviously been there for days if not weeks! That means Housekeeping cleaned our room at least once after the previous guest and side nce we've been here TWICE without vacuuming under the chair or even moving it! We found it when my husband moved the chair six inches to the left to watch TV. (And no, the chair was not heavy or hard to move). I immediately reported it to the hotel manager that morning; she apologized and said housekeeping would clean it up. After reporting the issue we left for the day, returned at 5pm that evening and THE PLUM WAS STILL THERE! I cringe at the thought of what else was overlooked in their “cleaning”. I would highly discourage anyone from staying here.
One Night at the W
Very friendly reception folks. Downside 3 people are not enough – check in line had over 12 separate guests winding around the bar area to check in. Took over 15 minutes to get to desk and I was near the front.
Had drinks before dinner at the bar. Nice atmosphere and décor but location by check in was not the best placement design. Attentive and friendly bartender – good drinks.
Room I was given overlooked the fire escape with view of other hotel/business windows – plus side it was quiet. You also did not hear any guests – good sound proofing.
King size bed was extremely comfortable as were the pillows. Good lighting – good Wi-Fi - large TV and separate DVD/CD Player – lots of outlets – roomy desk area . Room included a white noise machine.
Bathroom was the smallest I have ever had traveling – it seemed like an added afterthought. Toilet looked straight out the bedroom window. Nice lemon/sage personal products. Kohler bath fixtures – excellent water pressure.
Elevators were fast.
