How to Get There
Let’s start with the positives. The Tremont is in a great location, and the staff are super. It is a half block away from Michigan Avenue and very close to Water Tower Place. It is so easy to access the shopping and views afforded by being near the Magnificent Mile and shoreline. The staff are very friendly and helpful from the moment you check in until the moment you depart. For our business meeting, The Tremont also provided a very good rate for each night. That said, there were a few issues that makes me think this place needs a bit more TLC. Firstly, we tried to iron some clothes and thought the iron was broken after plugging it into two outlets. It turned out that neither socket was able to power the iron, which worked fine using the outlet in the bathroom. Next we had a bit of trouble with the closet door, which kept coming out of the track when we opened the door. The top hinge was not secured, and it was very loose, suggesting that the problem was identifiable well in advance of our visit. Next the toilet plugged without too much having been sent down the drain to plug it. This, the peeling paint in the bathroom, and the continual on and off of the toilet’s filling mechanism (suggesting that the flap was overdue for a replacement) made the bathroom feel a bit run down. I’ll finish with the staircase, which is a must have for me, as I prefer the exercise of climbing the stairs to the convenience of an elevator. The stairs were safe, and they were available, but the second and third floor area was worn and quite a bit grimy from use by kitchen staff that used the same stairs. A bit of cleaning and a coat of paint would go a long way to improve it and prevent guests from feeling a bit gross when climbing the stairs. Overall, I guess this place is okay, but I think a bit more TLC could make it much nicer and result in more generous ratings.
The Tremont is about a block from Michigan Avenue and is reasonably priced. The bed was perfectly comfortable, too.
Beyond that, I don't have much good to say. I felt dirty the whole time I was there. There were problems with the bathroom, mold in the guest rooms, stained chairs, nicked furniture, a generally funky smelling lobby, and loud guests in the room next to ours.
I'm frankly surprised this place is affiliated with Starwood, which is the reason I booked there. I won't be staying again.
We stayed in the Tremont Hotel in early June, 2018. We booked our room using SPG points several months earlier. We were notified within one month of our reservation that the hotel would no longer be affiliated with Starwood or Marriott, but that our reservation would be honored. That gave us some cause for worry as no reason was given. We were pleasantly surprised by The Tremont and very satisfied. Every encounter with a staff member was positive and made us feel special. The room was quiet, luxurious and a great refuge from the city. We had a king sized bed on the 10th floor with a west facing view. The bed was quite nice, the closet ample for a 6 night stay and the bathroom was well appointed. I'd read reviews about hallway noise--but we heard none of it. We did go for coffee several mornings, but never had the breakfast offered at Ditka's restaurant. We loved the location and would come back to the Tremont again (even if it meant paying for the rooms with cash vs points).
As a Starwood Platinum Guest, our family decided to return to Chicago after nearly a three (3) year hiatus to spend another five (5) nights at The Tremont Chicago Hotel at Magnificent Mile for an beginning-of-summer vacation. We had previously spent six (6) nights at The Tremont in August 2015.
This boutique hotel is located a half-block off Michigan Avenue with a clear, unobstructed view of the John Hancock Building. From this location we easily walked to such popular tourist destinations such as the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Grant Park, the Theater District as well as along the length of Michigan Avenue (shopping nirvana) as well as numerous lakefront beaches, including Oak Street Beach and Ohio Street Beach. The Tremont is located within a quarter-mile of a myriad of five (5) star properties, including The Sofitel, The Four Seasons, The Drake, the Penninsula, the Waldorf Astoria, among others so the Tremont is definitely within good company but with extraordinarily less expensive room rates. Finally, there is a convenient subway stop at State Street and Chicago Avenue [Red Line], which is a mere 5 minute walk away from the hotel (0.3 miles), for easy connection to the vast subway system in Chicago, which includes numerous stops throughout the city as well as transportation hubs such as at Union Station (train) as well as Midway and O'Hare airports. In other words, the location cannot be beat!
Immediately after making our five (5) night stay on a pre-paid stay (an excellent value!) over seven (7) months prior to our check in date for early summer vacation, we emailed Kristina Brown, General Manager of this property, and advised her of our future stay as well as our special requests, including an upgrade to one of their three (3) Penthouse Suites located on the 16th floor, two of which have a view of Michigan Avenue as well as Lake Michigan (the Delaware and the Michigan Avenue Suites) as well as several other special requests. Ms. Brown promptly replied and provided us a complimentary guaranteed upgrade to any of the three (3) Penthouse Suites (we chose the Chestnut Suite since Ms. Brown also provided us with a connecting King bedroom, which was absolutely perfect for our two (2) young daughters) and was incredibly accommodating and granted each of our special requests to make our vacation very special. Ms. Brown's response did not come as a surprise to us given how active she is in reading and promptly replying to her guests on Trip Advisor as well as the SPG.com website, which is but a mere sign of her commitment to exemplary customer service. Not surprisingly, we were delighted with such a response and really looked forward to our return stay at the Tremont. Thank you so much, Kristina!
Our return visit to the Tremont Chicago Hotel at Magnificent Mile did not disappoint!
The check in process with was a breeze and we simply loved our three room suite [the Chestnut Penthouse Suite, which was two (2) rooms and the connecting King bedroom] on the 16th floor with 11 foot ceilings and excellent city views (this is the only penthouse suite without a view of Lake Michigan]. The two (2) room suite had plenty of windows that featured the stellar city view. The first room of the suite consisted of a living room with large couch, a love seat, a coffee table, a large dining-room type table with six (6) chairs, a wet bar with a small fridge and microwave, a gas fireplace with a wall-mounted big flat-screen TV and a spacious half-bath. There was a door separating the first room of the suite from the second room of the suite, which was a large bedroom with a very comfortable king-sized bed, another love seat, a chaise lounge, another coffee table, a very large closet with electronic safe, a large dresser of drawers and an adjacent full-sized bathroom with marble counter-tops, two (2) sinks, a deep bathtub and a separate shower. The separate connecting room had a king-sized bed, desk, extra sitting chair, wall-mounted flat screen TV, dresser and an ample closet with electronic safe. The bathroom consisted of a marble counter-top with two (2) sinks and a tub / shower combination. All of the rooms had windows at the exterior walls with excellent views.
Both king-sized beds were very comfortable and the housekeeping staff provided extra towels, bath products and several bottles of complimentary water each day. Further, the cleanliness of the room was exemplary and for this we want to recognize the entire housekeeping staff. The complimentary Wifi provided by the Tremont was excellent.
Every team member with whom we came in contact, including Kristina (General Manager), the front desk staff and the house-keeping staff really went out of their way to make our entire family (especially our two young daughters) feel welcomed. For example, upon our arrival to our suite, Kristina provided a large tub of Garrett Gourmet Popcorn, several packages of Frango chocolate from Marshall Fields plus four (4) handy cloth shopping bags emblazoned with The Tremont logo, all of which came in handy for five (5) days of shopping, as well as a thoughtful welcome card. How delightful!
As our Platinum amenity, we enjoyed the daily breakfast each morning at Ditka's Restaurant, for which we had direct access through the newly re-envisioned lobby at the Tremont. Our family enjoyed a wide variety of breakfast items each morning, including scrambled eggs, thin-cut home-fried potatoes, bagels, yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. On Saturday and Sunday of our stay, we were able to order off the regular breakfast menu, where we had such specialties such as Waffles and Fried Chicken as well as egg-white omlettes and crepes. Besides Ditka's restaurant, there are numerous restaurants, bars and coffee shops in very close proximity to the hotel for a multitude of lunch, dinner and late night dining options.
The extraordinary customer service that we received before and during our stay made this property a ten out of ten in our book. Congratulations to Kristina for assembling such a great team and leading them with a overriding goal of excellent customer service. Thank you all for making our early summer vacation so incredible.

Found this room using my company's travel site. It was in a great location and priced almost half of what the nearest Residence Inn was charging. Rooms were small but clean and bed was comfortable. The location is right off of Michigan Avenue and I was able to walk from Capital Grille back to hotel at about 11 pm with no problems at all.
