How to Get There
The Hotel California is one of the finest 4 Star hotels in Paris.
Years ago, when I was a university student, I spent my first summer break travelling around Europe and wound up in Paris. I knew that I wanted to be close to the lively Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triumph so I chose to stay at the Hotel California located at 16 rue de Berri which was just a short walk to the most famous boulevard in Paris. The location was perfect.
The Hotel California has a rich history. Originally it was designed as a private elegant mansion. It was Pierre Bermond the famed French hotelier who, in 1925, transformed the mansion to a luxury hotel. Celebrities such as Clark Gable and Elizabeth Taylor stayed there. I also heard that Hemingway stayed at the Hotel California so that was good enough for me.
Recently my wife and I wanted to spend some time in Paris during the Christmas season. I had such wonderful memories of my time at the Hotel California so staying there was my first choice and I and my wife were so very glad that it was.
A lot has changed since I was there last. What hasn’t changed is that Art Deco vibe and a warm feeling that one gets upon entering the Hotel California. It’s kind of like coming home after a long trip away. I think it’s the friendly greeting that we received from the moment the doorman took charge of our luggage and escorted us through the elegant lobby to the reception desk that made us feel right at home. The genuine caring professionalism of the receptionist set the tone for our stay. She certainly was well prepared for us. She explained how to access wi-fi and where and when breakfast was served.
The porter who escorted us to our room was quite knowledgeable about the hotel. On the way to our room he explained to us where the gym with cardio equipment and free weights was located. He informed us that the business center with computers and printers was also available to us. As we walked along the hallway the walls were covered with wonderful paintings and diverse works of art. That is something that had not changed since my first stay at the hotel.
Our room was beautifully appointed with very comfortable classic Parisian furnishings. We certainly took advantage of the 24 hour room service, mini bar, flat screen TV and safe.
In the hands of the exceptionally talented general manager, Ms. Clarisse Thiry, her well trained staff is held to her high standards thus exceeding the Hotel California’s four-star status.
The hotel boasts 172 classic rooms 17 of which are suites and some of the suites have balconies. There are 7 conference rooms available to business clients.
What was an obvious change since my first stay there was the inviting interior courtyard patio which had a lovely fountain in the center of it. One can dine there in that serene environment for lunch or dinner.
After settling in we took a short stroll along the Champs Elysees. The trees that lined that most famous boulevard were brightly lit for the Christmas season as well as were many of the high-end shops along the way toward the Arc de Triomphe.
Along the Champs Elysees there are many fine restaurants. However, after enjoying the sights and sounds of our Paris stroll, we decided to head back to our hotel and dine there.
Dining in the Lounge Bar Restaurant was nothing short of a magical gastronomic experience. Chef Gilles Courtin is, without exception, one of the finest chefs in Paris.
Every dish he prepared for us could have made the cover of Bon Appetite Magazine.
To begin our dining experience we shared the veal carpaccio with black tomatoes. We also shared the poached egg ravioli with celery mouse, poppy cream and wild garlic flower. Amazing! For my main course I savored every morsel of the osso bucco set before me. The steamed seasonal vegetables were perfectly prepared. My wife loved her choice of the Grilled prawns in a parmesan risotto. Each course was paired with a delicious wine as recommended by Chef Courtin.
After dinner we enjoyed a glass of sherry in the lounge and talked about all the famous people that stayed here and just why they chose the Hotel California.
That evening sealed it for us. The next time we decide to visit Paris we will return to this exceptionally wonderful hotel with its perfect location, friendly staff, fine restaurant and rooms that complement the serenity we seek.
The hotel is beautiful with wonderful rooms and great amenities. It’s also in an excellent location.
The best part of the hotel, however, were the staff. They were very friendly and made us feel welcome every single day! Always had a greeting and a kind word for us and no request was too much trouble for them. They made our stay in Paris truly wonderful!
Hotel choosen for a seminar (30p) with a good location not far from "Arc de Triomphe" but in a small perpendicular street of "Champs Elysées" so relatively "quiet".
Hotel offers a good comfort but could be refurbished as some rooms are a little bit "old fashioned". Anyway, very friendly staff, good level of service and little terrace inside the hotel allowing the group to have a cocktail. Full breakfast with warm & cold buffet.
All the people were satisfied of the service.
Our suite was a more than we expected for the price. I would recommend Hotel California to anyone wanting to visit Paris. The hotel has an excellent staff to take care of your needs. The art displayed on the walls of the hallways and in the rooms greatly adds to the experience of being a guest at the hotel.
I cannot extend enough compliments to this hotel for the absolutely perfect honeymoon stay they provided for my son and daughter-in-law. From the moment they stepped foot into this hotel, their dreams met reality. I had been in communication with this hotel for several months prior to their stay, and the staff was quick to respond, kind in its communication, and eager to provide the best stay possible. My son and his bride boasted of the treatment they received, of the rose petals, the champagne, the picture perfect room and surroundings and the outstanding breakfast. They couldn't be happier. They stated that the hotel staff was beyond kind to them. They told me that they even wanted to move there. As far as I'm concerned, this hotel is not only top notch, it exceeds the stars. If you're looking for a romantic getaway to Paris, and you want the "royal" treatment, I highly recommend this hotel. They went above and beyond to ensure that my son and his wife experienced a honeymoon beyond their dreams. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
