A 1940s printing factory-turned-design-forward hotspot near Reykjavik’s main shopping hub, Laugavegur
L.A.-based Icelandic architect Gulla Jonsdottir is behind the distinctive look of the 52-room CenterHotel Thingholt hotel, which is housed in a 1940s converted printing factory. Luxe textures are the cornerstone here: The floors and lobby walls are made of leather tiles, and there’s a long, black lava textured wall at the entrance that’s covered by trickling water and hung with dark glass masks representing the hidden people of Iceland. Some guestrooms are decked out with rock-star pieces like white leather sofas, cowskin rugs and deep-soaking bathtubs. And the hotel’s location can’t be beat; it’s near nighttime revelry and Iceland’s trendiest shopping district, Laugavegur.
In the Area
Soak up Icelandic culture at the nearby National Museum of Iceland, whose permanent collection traces the history of the nation from settlement to present day. Shop for offbeat pieces on lively Laugavegur, Reykjavik’s main shopping strip, where you can pick up avant-garde knits from Elm Design Team, stock up on conservation-starting groceries at century-old supermarket Verslunin Vísir and browse the well-curated shelves at Kisan, Thorunn Anspach and Olivier Brémond’s hip concept store. Finally, slip into cult subterranean bar Kofi Tómasar frænda for snacks and coffee (or something stronger.)
