Elegant downtown sleep in a landmark building for a comfy business stay or splurge-worthy staycation
Opened in 2003 in the former Post Dispatch building in downtown Houston, this 22-story style sleep is a favorite with the business crowd, families and seclusion-seeking staycationers. Interiors are done up in a polished modern-industrial style, from the circular multi-height lobby with huge metal-effect columns and frosted glass, to The Lounge with leather chairs and a vintage billiards table. Guestrooms, by contrast, are classically styled in mahogany, gold and coffee shades, with decorative gold frame headboards, heavy curtains and comfy armchairs, plus all the mod cons, including stocked mini fridges, tea and coffee making facilities and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have single vanities, decorative mirrors and standalone showers stocked with own-brand toiletries. Like all Magnolia hotels, there are perks aplenty here, from the free hot breakfast buffet and daily wine and beer hour, to a nightly spread of milk and cookies and free downtown transportation. A menu of classic American fare is served in The Lounge, a multi-purpose space for dining, drinking, watching sports and playing pool on the vintage billiards table. There’s also a small seasonal rooftop pool for post-work dips or a quick dose of vitamin D before the searing Houston heat kicks in.
In the Area
There’s a wealth of quintessential Houston attractions throughout this bustling business hub. Many are quite close to the hotel, such as the Space Center and the House of Blues and Discovery Green. The hotel’s location also puts it within a roughly 10-minute drive of restaurants like tasting-menu-only Oxheart (considered the best in the city), Japanese eatery Uchi, casual and delicious The Pass & Provisions and perennial favorite Vietnamese spot Les Givral’s Kahve. For the best thoughtfully mixed cocktails in town, hit Anvil, a bar that is wildly popular among locals and national food editors alike.
