How to Get There
I had wanted to visit this Schloss for a very long time as I was interested in its connection to Queen Victoria. We were not able to book online as their website was not working properly,so I had to call to make the reservation, but at the time the lady could not give me the online discount. Luckily, a nice woman with dark hair at the reception the next day was able to sort this out for us.
When we arrived the man at the reception was very matter of fact, but not overly friendly or welcoming, which was a bit of a culture shock having received such a warm friendly reception from our hotels in Spain( see review of Parador Caceres).
The next morning was the same when we ran into staff who barely acknowledged us which was a little off putting. However, the Schloss itself is beautiful and our room was lovely as were the grounds. I loved the traditional decor not being a fan of the cookie cutter modern designs all hotels seem to have these days.
The highlight of our stay was Lars the manager and Shobin. Lars actually smiled at us and gave us a very informative tour of the hotel. He pointed out some very interesting facts, for example the room between two floors. The other highlight of our stay was Shobin. He worked in the restaurant and was very friendly and welcoming. He spoke English and German. Very helpful and just a delightful person. You could tell he cared for the guests and went out of his way to help them. He made us feel very welcome and made our anniversary stay special. The food was overall good, but very expensive, but that was to be expected at a five star hotel.
The town was okay nothing special. Not unwelcoming, but not very friendly either. As much as I loved the beauty of the hotel Lars, and Shobin, I think I would go back to the Villa Rothschild next time(review on TripAdvisor). Just a more welcoming, historical hotel and better value for the money overall.
Absolutely loved my experience. The hotel is old world charm, classic, beautiful and clean. Impeccable service from reception to service staff. The room was comfortable and big enough for our family , really enjoyed the bar stocked with complimentary drinks and fresh fruit. Stunning grounds for a morning walk. Good selection of foods for breakfast. Will highly recommend it.
I am a big fan of the small luxury hotels group and found this hotel through them. I am so happy that a did. It is close to the airport but in a small enclave outside of town on an historic estate with grounds that include a golf course and croquet court. The joy of it is that it still looks and feels as though the princess royal that formerly lived here could come walking down the stairs. The entry, hallways, stairways, library and drawing rooms all remain intact and fully decorated. The restaurant is very good with excellent local food. It is an experience in itself. Service at all levels was gracious and hospitable. I did inquire about a paid upgrade on check in and was told that my rooms were quite nice and that I should go look at them first. They were quite nice but I would have liked to have at least been offered the opportunity without the necessity of going to the other rooms first. The rooms were nice with modern well appointed bathrooms. Our room had a separate sitting area and floral wallpaper. It had plenty of light despite the fact on the top floors the rooms are smaller dormer windows. The view was beautiful and I highly recommend this property. You will remember your stay fondly
