Domaine de Verchant
How to Get There
Right in the vineyards area outside of Montpellier. Highly rated by Michelin modern hotel in well designed buildings and very fine restaurant. And also a bistro on premisses surrounded by the vineyards where the food is also excellent, much cheaper, in some ways more interesting and wine prices so much more reasonable. The gastronomique restaurant was quite nice, with very good dishes coming out of the kitchen by inventive chef. But like all of these the prices are high and the wine prices elevated beyond where they should be. Too high a markup of lovely local wines. Very nice room with well designed and good functioning modern bathroom. .
We spent three nights at the Verchant. Our room was beautiful and extremely comfortable. Three dinners were excellent. We spent one rainy day entirely on the property (and another visiting nearby Montpellier). Everything was lovely. However, when we arrived the receptionist, in answer to my question, said, "We have three pools. Indoor and one of the two outdoor pools are heated. The third is not." Well, the pool that wasn't heated actually had no water in it, just trash that was being removed while we were there. The indoor pool was lovely, and we were lucky to be able to swim in it three times, but it's relatively small and gets crowded at times. The third pool was much larger, but filled with cold water.
We chose a 'menu' dinner each night and agreed, as the server proposed, to be surprised by the chef, so we didn't know what we were going to eat. Everything was excellent, including the cheese course. Unfortunately, when the waitress asked us, "would you like some cheese?", she failed to mention that there was an extra charge. She did that three times. The first night i didn't look carefully at the bill when i signed it; the second night i realized what had happened; the third night we skipped it, and at checkout we complained about the first two charges and they were deducted from our bill. But it shouldn't have happened.
Then, right after my credit card had been processed, I realized there was an error in our bill. The clerk said she would check with her manager about correcting it. She returned and said that he had approved it, but she refused to put through the credit while i was standing there, credit card in hand. "We will do it later." The next day i emailed them because i saw online that they hadn't done it. They lied to me and said that my credit card didn't work. "Do you have another card?" I gave them another card. "We will take care of this on Friday." It never happened. Fortunately, my bank issued a credit ($145) and the hotel did not argue about it. Shame shame on the Verchant.
We loved our stay here. The staff are very friendly and the grounds are beautiful. Would definitely recommend this place to friends and hopefully will come back again sometime should we be passing Montpellier.
This Relais and Chateaux property just outside Montpellier and a few miles from the airport is a great base to explore Languedoc and western Provence. The location is reached via a business park, which is a bit odd but once onsite, it feels very rural and there is a large on site vineyard. We were here in early spring but in summer, it must be stunning. The buildings have a traditional stone exterior but a very modern interior design. Room was large, quiet and very comfortable. Only slight gripe was that the lighting couldn't be turned up higher. Great bathroom but could have done with a few more towel pegs. Breakfast was excellent. Had dinner at La Plage restaurant which was very good too. Loved the spa and pool. Service was always helpful and friendly. Would love to return.
The owners of this traditional farmhouse/vineyard have certainly got a good eye for style.
The gorgeous original building has been lovingly restored and enhanced by excellent modern additions such as the atrium to the restaurant and the new pool area.
Our room was a junior suite with exposed stone walls, original beams, a wonderfully comfortable bed and one of the best shower/bath rooms we’ve ever enjoyed.
Several little touches made the room even better such as the generous allocation of Hermes products, the full size Apple Mac for your use and the complimentary bottle of their own red wine to take away.
The application of thoughtful style continued into the gardens and outbuildings with a well equipped spa and a fabulous second restaurant and bar around the pool area.
Our dog loved walking around the varied gardens which were filled with interesting sculptures and old farming tools etc and which came alive at night with an amazing array of outdoor illuminations.
Our dog was also made to feel very welcome in the bar and restaurant which is always nice.
Breakfast was superb with an incredibly extensive buffet and a egg/pancake chef on hand to knock-up anything you wanted.
The dinner menu was interesting and the food good - although some of the dishes seemed to be trying very hard to look great with the flavours not quite matching up to the same level.
The House wines were great though!
Two things that could be vastly improved are the quality of the internet in the rooms (or at least the block we were in) although it was much better in the bar/Restaurant and the range of beers in the main bar - for a five star hotel to only serve Carlsberg and Heineken is a bit unimaginative!
