French-inspired, family-run Wine Country inn with nightly wine and cheese receptions
Healdsburg is one of Wine Country’s true treasures, an effortless blend of charm, class and hospitality. The same is true of this lovely 16-room, French-inspired, family-run inn, which took the tiny town by storm when it opened in 2005. Landscaped gardens frame a chateaux-style exterior. Inside, you’ll find a filigreed staircase sweeping down to a lobby filled with 17th- and 18th-century antiques next to a stately walnut-paneled library.
Bed & Bath
Lofty four-poster canopy beds, rich tapestries, antique furniture and soaring ceilings transport guests to the French countryside. But though the rooms are big on old-fashioned charm, Les Mars doesn’t deprive its guests of modern amenities with flat-screen TVs in antique armoires and free WiFi. Gas fireplaces and hydrotherapy Jacuzzi tubs up the romance factor.
Unwind after a long day of wine tasting, then retreat to the library where the nightly wine and cheese reception is held from 6 to 7 p.m.; the event often features Q&As with the resident sommelier or a guest appearance by local winemakers. Afterwards, sample seasonal small plates made from ingredients sourced on the restaurant’s off-site three-acre garden and from other local purveyors at the casual new Chalkboard. Tuck into dishes like housemade wild nettle and ricotta gnudi with mushrooms and meyer lemon and buttermilk fried quail around a massive old-growth oak farm table or at cozy banquettes overlooking the open kitchen.
In the Area
To see the tapestry of vineyards flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains from a bird’s eye view, float up into the clouds in the comfort of a hot air balloon tour. Rent a set of wheels from Anderson Valley wine region and join one of the day tours through Dry Creek Valley and beyond. Old-timey country store Oakville Grocery Co. is one of the most famous institutions in Northern California, having been around since 1881. Get in on the history and grab an artisanal sandwich, perfectly paired with vino, at a table by the crackling fireplace. The area surrounding Healdsburg is more than just vines, it’s full of hidden waterways, as well. Grab a paddle and a canoe from River’s Edge, and float down the Russian River for a perfect afternoon in the great outdoors.
