How to Get There
We treated our niece to an overnighter in the Château d’Isenbourg which dominates the town of Rouffach. It is one of a series of five called the “Grandes Etapes Françaises”, luxury establishments to discover. It was well restored and beautifully renovated by Mr. René Traversac in the fall of 1972.
We arrived at the hotel a little before three in the afternoon after some sightseeing. From the parking lot one can admire the pool and the lush grounds leading to the entrance. This site vibrates history taking us back to King Dagobert II and the Bishopric of Strasbourg.
Room 14 was ready for our niece so we were led straight away by charming Guillaume. Wow! I was almost jealous. Her room was not only spacious and traditionally decorated Louis XV, but had moldings on the ceiling with painted chubby cherubs to greet us. A photo session in front of the marble fireplace in the sitting room was a must. The view of the vineyards from the windows is lovely.
We had to wait a bit for our room to be inspected. It was well worth it. Room 2 is just off the reception. It didn’t have the same effect on me at first because it was more modern and smaller than room 14. But when Guillaume revealed the adjacent air conditioned glassed in tiled sun room, I was in heaven. Then he proceeded to open the following door that led outside onto our private terrace.
One could throw a party for fifty people on this terrace with its panoramic view of this superb wine region. From there we opened a gate and descended a metal stairway to the pool. Fantastic! We jumped into our suits and off to the pool we went. It was amusing to see the people coming towards the stairs leading to our terrace only to be turned away by the sign that read reserved for clients in room 2.
We dined in the restaurant outside on the veranda that evening. Olivier, our waiter made it a point to help us enjoy ourselves. He even let me sing, “La Vie en Rose” in the arched cellar dated XVe and XVIe cradled under the restaurant which was luckily untouched by the demolition of 1822.
We had a great night’s sleep. The breakfast buffet spread was to our heart’s desire.
When checking out we were greeted with Laetitia’s candid smile at the reception. We will definitely go back and discover all that we missed at the spa, including the indoor pool. We highly recommend this elegant castle in Alsace.
It was quite by chance that we arrived at the majestic chateau. We were welcomed by attentive staff who made us feel at home in the rather regal surroundings.
With views of mountains and the Black Forest in the distance and the tree lined banks of the Rhine also visible, the Chateau has a splendid location.
The restaurant is equally special and we enjoyed regional specialists and fine French wine of the highest standard.
Parking is easy, large swimming pool and manicured gardens.
We recommend this hotel without hesitation.
We spend two nights at Chateau d'Isenbourg. It's an amazing chateau with a great restaurant overlooking the vineyards. Such a peaceful place serving amazing food and a with a very kind and competent staff. Will definitely come back.
We stayed in room 16. Corner room with great views. All the superior rooms have this view.
We loved our stay at the hotel. Rooms might look outdated from the pictures, but they are not. Excuisit interior design.
Restaurant served the best diner we experienced during our Elzas tour. Flexible and friendly staff. Downside was the small spa that was 'crowded' with teenagers doing their teenage thing (making noise:-)).
Outside pool is a wonderful addition to the stay.
Very comfortable accommodation excellent food, taste and presentation. Exterior of the building could do with a bit of a face lift. Staff and service excellent, swimming pool and facilities also excellent.
