Designer digs in Harbin’s financial district with a top spa, a state-of-the-art gym and a late night bar
Set back from the bustle of downtown, with clear views of the city, Sofitel Wanda Harbin is a five-star modernist stay in the heart of Harbin’s business district. The hotel’s 22-story, glass-fronted exterior belies the warmth of its cream and coffee-colored public spaces; the lobby is decked out with polished marble floors, high vaulted ceilings and funky Art Deco-style lighting, while guestrooms come with textured wallpaper, deep pile carpets, and plump velvet sofas. Asian-influenced furnishings, bedspreads and artwork nod to the city’s rich history, with splashes of scarlet and burnt orange adding warmth. Luxe bathrooms are connected to the living areas with sleek, floor-to-ceiling glass panels. Book a hot stone massage at the colossal Lea Spa, work out at the all-mod-cons gym, or relax with a dip, or a session in the sauna. Then feast on sushi and sashimi in a private room at II, the hotel’s upscale Japanese restaurant. Top off your evening with a post-dinner cocktail at Ku Bar and Cigar Lounge; there’s nightly live music and the bar stays open until 2 am.
In the Area
Harbin’s notoriously harsh winters are sweetened each year by the world-famous International Snow And Ice Festival. For three months, you can ride a horse-drawn carriage through the 150-acre display park, featuring dramatically lit ice and snow sculptures. In 2014, the display included the tallest ice sculpture in China: a 46-meter replica of the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik. In the warmer months, hire a gondola and float over the Songhua River to dazzling Sun Island. Watch newlywed couples walk arm in arm, then meander through the leafy park, checking out the deer petting zoo and the turtle pond along your way.
