Sleek family-friendly retreat with beach hammocks and a treetop lounge on a secluded bay near Mount Athos
On a pretty peninsula off mainland Halkidiki, Ekies All Senses Resort is a fun, family-friendly eco-retreat overlooking the secluded shores of Vourvourou Bay. Hammocks strung over ankle-high water are scattered around a jetty, which leads to a palm-thatched bar and an inside-outside restaurant. The landscaped lawns are studded with pine trees and shrubs, and eco-friendly materials have been used throughout, complementing sleek designer pieces including parasols that resemble lampshades and mod poolside rocking chairs. Step inside and the airy lobby is decorated with a sumptuous hand-woven wool rug, a vast cushioned daybed and a cozy open fireplace — an homage to Greek rural life.
Bed and Bath
The use of light colors and natural materials, including handmade pillows, sheets and mattresses by eco-friendly Greek bedding company Cocomat, gives a breezy, seaside feel to the hotel's 64 rooms and suites. A massive timber staircase leads to the majority of the guestrooms, which are spread across two floors and are designed to echo the region's traditional houses, with white-painted chestnut wood floors, large windows overlooking the gardens and open fireplaces that can be used on chilly evenings. Some suites have wooden terraces with outdoor Jacuzzis. A cluster of bungalow-style Deluxe Rooms and Junior Suites are set by the kidney-shaped pool. Walls are decorated with ancient Greek fables or modern artworks, and the walk-in showers have an adobe-esque finish, accentuating that indoor-outdoor feel. Luxury Suites are a good option for families, with private balconies and room for four.
Head chef Andreas Voulgaris oversees Ekies's two restaurants and rustles up traditional Greek dishes using local produce and fish bought directly from Sithonia’s tiny fishing market, a boat-hop away along the coast. If you’re seeking seclusion you can dine in the hotel's private sea-view treetop lounge, or for something really special, arrange dinner on one of the islands opposite. The laid-back beach bar serves drinks and snacks during the day and morphs into a stylish outdoor drinking den at night, with plump sofas and Regency chairs. The resort has a dinky spa where you can enjoy a variety of body scrubs, wraps and massages. There's a kids playground and babysitting facilities, and the shallow, calm waters of Vourvourou Bay are very family-friendly.
In the Area
Start your day with a yoga class at the resort, then ask reception to book you on a Mount Athos cruise. When you’re back from seeing the stunning exterior of Greece’s UNESCO Heritage holy mountain (the interior is off limits to women and children), ask Ekies to arrange a boat transfer and a picnic, then spend the afternoon lounging on one of the islands that dot Vourvourou Bay. If you want to soak up some of the local color, take the 10-minute taxi ride to Agios Nikolaos, where you’ll find traditional tavernas, bougainvillea-festooned streets and small shops selling everything from feta cheese to the local specialty, thyme honey.
