Family-friendly megaresort on Sanya Bay with a lagoon-style pool, tennis courts and tons of water sports

The Lowdown

On Sanya Bay, at the southern tip of Hainan Island, the Pullman Oceanview is a five-star megaresort with a large lagoon-style pool, tennis courts, a private beach and tons of family-friendly activities. The 469 air-conditioned guestrooms have a contemporary beach feel, with neutral tones, natural fabrics and bold accents, and they all overlook the gardens or the ocean. The bathrooms come with large separate tubs and rain showers, and the windows open fully to let in the cool sea breeze (although mosquitoes can be a nuisance in this area). The apartments are truly spacious (1,291 to 1,937 square feet) and offer 180-degree ocean views. There are two restaurants, one international and one Cantonese, and four bars, including the 17th-floor Red Sun Bar for sundowners with views.

In the Area

There are tons of activities to try your hand at in built-for-tourists Sanya, in the southern part of Hainan Island. The beaches near the hotel are perfect for jet-skiing, paragliding and banana boating, and the hotel can help organize glass-bottom boating, deep sea fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. There’s surfing in Riyue Bay; lessons and equipment can be organized with Surfing Hainan. During the Qing Dynasty, Hainan was known as the End of the Earth, and today tourists flock to a rock formation of the same name.

Relaxing Trip

A much needed girls trip couldn't have been made better than by our stay here at Pullman. The room was amazing and clean and every request was taken in a meticulous manner. I would also like to thank Chris for helping us during our stay as he was friendly and approachable.

Our stay here has been nothing but great. There are many different services and activities offered by the hotel that we do not really need to go out to enjoy them. Definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to come to Sanya.

Excellent stay!

Had a few nights stay with my wife here last November.

The hotel was really nice - good breakfast, very nice room and great amenities.

But the highlight of our stay was really the customer service we received even before we checked in. Our airline changed our original flight which meant that our booking needs to be changed (we booked a non-refundable rate). Contacted the hotel and explained the situation so they cancelled the booking for me without any penalty.

They also helped me out in getting flowers for my wife as we were celebrating something special at the time of our stay. One of the lovely ladies at the Welcoming desk also let us use her "Wechat" wallet to rent an electric scooter. Really loved our stay thanks to all the staff at the hotel!

Not worth the money

We are returning guests to Sanya and decided to stay at Pullman this time. Unfortunately our stay was not as good as expected. Upon arrival we had the first trouble. Rather than receiving two room back on back, we received two separate rooms. We booked non-smoking due to our travel with kids. When we received our rooms they were all smelly with ashtray in the room. Only after long discussions we got a different room. This time we received two rooms on the opposite site of the floor. Really very inconvenient. We took them as the hotel refused to give us any other option. Even though we booked an additional bed, it took very long time for getting it.
The name ocean view suggests that it is right at the ocean - sorry, but there is a busy road in between hotel and ocean. There is a tunnel that leads you from the hotel to the ocean, however. Anyway, you hear the traffic. The beach itself is not very clean, as it is more or less a public beach. There are some sun lounger but that's about it for amenities. By the way, if you are afraid of rats, don't go there at night time. They are all over the place.

The seafood buffet is very pricey. I honestly expected more for the money. There is no wine included - not even a house-wine. The beer served is stale. The food selection is so so. Come early, as it will not be refilled. Honestly, this is not something you would expect in a 5-star hotel.

The breakfast is good however. But you should show up early. The waiters are annoying however, since they seem to ask for your room card many times at one day.

We tried the restaurant and were positively surprised the first time. We were the only guests in the restaurant and were served nicely. When we returned the other day, we expected a similar experience but were totally disappointed. There were only a few guests this time but obviously too many to serve well. The food was brought to the table in batches so one had already eaten up when the other food arrived. Napkins were not provided even though we asked for it. The food itself was lousy. Sorry, I cannot recommend it at all.

The housekeeping did a great job. Also the concierge did a good job in giving advice for places to go.

All in all it was acceptable but only average. Personally I would not return there. We have seen much better kept up properties with similar rates but much better amenities and service levels.
