How to Get There
Ok, guys, lets get right to it !
This is my 3rd Secrets in the past year. (You can see my reviews on the other 2 on TripAdvisor).
To say that THIS Secrets was better than the others, would be an understatement.
While the others (in the Mexico area) were wonderful, they don’t begin to compare to this one.
The food ? OUTSTANDING.
The service ? ASTOUNDING.
The area ? Incomparable.
First , the beauty of the entire Peninsula is almost overwhelming. The resort itself is beautiful, well kept, well stocked, and impeccably maintained.
I know there is a lot of debate as to whether “all inclusive” is “better” or not. In this particular case, I had just come from Andaz (see my review) and I found that, although AESTHETICALLY, Andaz “may” have the edge (and IF so, only by molecules - (and could EASILY be disagreed-with by someone else - it's that close), I have to say both properties are GORGEOUS; and, again, by molecules, Andaz’s customer service MAY have edged Secrets out (by millimeters, IF at all), the food at Secrets is noticeably better in terms of taste AND choices.
(That having been said, others opine that Andaz is more “tropical” - personally, I think it has to do with WHERE, in the resort, your room is located).
Personally, I think there is more rest to be had at Andaz and, if rest and only rest is what you’re looking for, that’s the place for you. At Secrets, there is virtually NO end to the activities -LOL, even a blackjack tournament ! (YAY!). (Not to mention the hikes, pool volleyball, - there was just more to DO at secrets and I think that is not by accident; they cater to different populations).
In conclusion, I would come back here in a heartbeat. Everything here is first rate. I simply could not have planned a better place - you cannot...CANNOT go wrong here.
This particular resort does not live up to our previous experiences at other Secrets locations. As UVC members, reception told us to contact UVC about the next level room upgrade upon check-in. The issue was resolved later, but check-in was significantly delayed. We were without water for a full day in our room, so we could not take showers until after 5pm, and we had to request a shuttle to use the bathroom facilities in the main area until the water issue was resolved later in the evening. We also had to request towels/washcloths 2 or 3 days because used towels were removed, but not replaced in the room. It took almost an hour to receive the towels each day we needed to request replacements. The beach was very small, and almost non-existent during changes in the tide. Rooms are smaller than we've seen at other AM resorts. The pros include the wait staff friendliness and food selection at the restaurants. The shuttle drivers were top-notch!
My husband and I were blown away by Secrets Papagayo. We were predominantly in the area to learn to dive with Rich Coast Diving (really recommend them as well), so we weren’t on the resort much during the day. But the room was beautiful- with a wonderful view.
Jay jay is the best driver picking you up and driving you to key places in the resort which was fantastic when you didn’t have the energy to face the steep hills.
As this is an all inclusive we didn’t expect much for the quality of the food, but it turned out it was outstanding. None of the a la carte restaurants required reservations- we didn’t get around to the pan Asian but had the Italian twice and we fully recommend the rack of lamb and Parmesan risotto. Even the buffet was way above standard all inclusive quality. It had a nice range and was full of flavour- it felt more civilized as you were seated first before helping yourself.
The hotel sent by a bottle of champagne our first evening with there compliments which was lovely.
My only downsides to the Secrets experience were that when we called for a shuttle a few times the first couple days it never showed when we were in a rush to get to diving on time, it was then difficult to find concierge to get our car keys which made us late- going forward we kept our keys and parked it ourselves. The other small issue is that the toilet door doesn’t fully close in the room we had so paired with the fact it’s only frosted glass you can’t be shy with peeing in front of your partner. Also there was construction so it wasn’t very tranquil when you wanted to sit on the terrace in front of your room which spoilt the scenery a bit with the noise. Lastly the room service food was a lot to be desired- it’s understandable to some degree as they serve it 24/7 so it has to be easy to make but compared to the other food it was tasteless and very Americanized.
Overall though we loved our experience and wished they had the availability for us to stay the whole week we were in CR rather than just the 5 days.
My husband and I stayed at Secrets 12/03-12/06 for the first part of our honeymoon. On day 1, we were talked into sitting through a "90 minute sales pitch over lunch" in exchange for a "romantic private dinner" in the on-site Italian restaurant. The sales pitch was in fact OVER THREE HOURS long, and extremely high pressure (I'll save you 3 hours of your life: the ask is $96,000 for a 40 year vacation discount membership). The special romantic dinner in their "wine cellar" was a glass room in the middle of the restaurant which was FREEZING, and the staff seemed to forget we were in there.
The next day the water went out at the resort for at least five hours (no showers, no toilets, etc). It seemed to be a scheduled maintenance outage, but the staff didn't bother to warn anybody in advance.
Upsides: the rooms are nice. 24 hour room service is great. The views are beautiful.
The unlimited drinks are all made with fresh fruit, so taste good although I am dubious as to how much alcohol is actually in them (and don't count on it being "top shelf").
My suspicion is that there are better options at a similar or lower price point. Do your homework.
We loved this resort more than Jamaica! Everyone was so happy and ready to serve you to make your stay as good as possible. The resort provided a fun day at an adventure park, jet skiing and many other excursions. It was very clean and the food and drinks were great! The beach is covered with a pretty black sand and in the water we saw a polka dotted puffer fish and sting ray. The beach is different than others because when the tide is out tons of volcanic rock is exposed and there are hundreds of tide pools to explore. My husband found tons of urchins, coral and little creatures. We spent days just walking and exploring them!
When we arrived at the resort we were given a free upgrade to the Presidential Suite! It was incredible. We had our own private balcony, heated pool and outdoor shower. We had a separate dining area, little kitchen and living room.
I definitely recommend Secrets!
