Family-friendly boutique resort on Pernambuco Beach, in the Paulistano coastal getaway of Guarujá
Coastal contemporary. This 301-room leisure/business hotel, built in 2006, is steeped in both clean-lined modernism and local art, which brightens the big, natural-tone lobby. The public spaces in all three wings are designed to capitalize on sea views, and the beige, lime, sky-blue and gray color scheme evokes the tropics.
Bed and Bath
The clean and crisp whitewashed rooms are large (Sea View Superior Rooms start at 409 square feet) and feature violet love seats and wicker furniture. The bathrooms feature marble sinks and rainfall showers (you’ll need to book a suite if you want a bathtub) and refreshing, citrusy Notes de Lanvin bath products from France. The signature Sofitel MyBeds are wrapped in Trussardi linens (Brazil’s most lavish) and are extra-comfy.
Though most of the restaurants are average (and pricey), the beachside Mar Casado, which specializes in fresh seafood, is wildly popular for its isthmus views and grilled lobster. Les Epices serves classic French fare and has earned one star from Brazil’s culinary bible, Guia Quatro Rodas. The excellent So Spa offers an extremely inviting couples treatment room, a 72-foot heated pool and an expansive relaxation deck with sea views. Elsewhere, there are tennis courts, a cinema, a vast main pool, a cocktail-centric lobby bar, a well-equipped fitness center by Companhia Athletica, a gigantic kids club, sand volleyball courts and an open-air shopping mall. You can also take a surfing lesson.
In the Area
Guarujá is all about fun in the sun. For less crowded strands than Pernumbuco, head to São Pedro Beach. There’s good surf at the nearby beaches of Praia do Tombo and Praia do Eden. South America’s biggest aquarium, Acqua Mundo, is a great choice for families. If you want to venture out for dinner in Guarujá, Dalmo Bárbaro is especially great for fish and seafood. For even more choices, head into nearby Santos, 12 miles to the west.
