Overview

The Review

Just an hour or so from cosmopolitan Hong Kong, Shenzhen was once known as the Middle Kingdom’s industrial hub. Today the city is the home and playground of some of China’s wealthiest people and a spa destination for weary urbanites from Hong Kong.

The Futian Shangri-La, in the center of Shenzhen’s business district, is an oasis amid the urban chaos, offering the brand’s world-class service alongside three dining venues and nearly 10,000 square feet of spa and health club facilities.

Each of the 548 guestrooms has a 37-inch wall-mounted plasma TV, and a 15-inch LCD TV by the bathtub as well; the tub is complemented by a separate rainfall shower.

There are four on-site dining venues: the Shang Garden, a casual spot serving Cantonese and Huaiyang cuisine; Café Zen, an open-kitchen buffet offering Hong Kong specialties and local favorites; Fook Lam Moon, which specializes in upscale private dining; and the Lobby Lounge, where quick drinks and bar bites are accompanied by live music from 8 p.m. to midnight daily.

The Futian Shangri-La’s eight-room spa offers treatments based on both Eastern and Western philosophies. If the massages and facials aren’t enough to bring back your Zen, the rest of the health club facilities — the indoor pool, tennis courts, sauna and Jacuzzi — can keep you busy for hours.

5 Stars Isn't Enough

Rita, Suin, and Maggie in the Horizon Club make it worth paying extra for if your status doesn't provide it. The Club easily paid for itself because there's enough food and drink they're that you don't need to eat or meet in an off-site restaurant or bar. It was so much better than the JW Marriott that we cancelled that reservation and re-booked here after returning from Guilin.

The highlight of our stay was the concierge Edward Yuan. When I asked where to buy tailored shirts nearby, he literally walked me 5 blocks to a shop where only locals frequent---after his shift ended. Then he walked me back to the hotel, which caused him to miss his train home. As a weekly road warrior for over 40 years, I have rarely encountered anyone in any hotel anywhere who unconditionally goes above and beyond for his guests. This man deserves a promotion and a raise in salary!

The gym and pool are almost as good as the Virgin Active club I belong to. and, the station for the high-speed train to Hong Kong is around the corner. Ask concierge to help with tickets if you don't know Mandarin.

Room needs immediate improvement

I stayed there for two nights, and had a very bad experience as the room’s air con was very noisy. I complained and hotel sent a technician to check the air con, but was told that all rooms are that noisy. I can hard sleep at all; this Never happened before at other hotels. It was a bad experience.

Great location, even better staff

Just 10mins from the Futain crossing to Hong Kong made it an easy choice. Was very impressed with all the staff on their attitude and knowledge. It is also within walking distance to the Futain high speed rail station. Only downside was the lack of choices for chinese restaurants for breakfast.
