How to Get There
What can I say? Just returned from one of the best vacations my family has ever taken!! The staff at the Westin are AMAZING! They made sure my family's needs were met every step of the way. The food was wonderful and when you have a picky eater like my 8 year old daughter, the staff made sure she was happy as well. The grounds are well kept and we were able to see monkeys, iguanas and even a very large family of koatamundis came by our room to say hello!. The pool was a lot of fun with activities throughout the day for the whole family. I thought my daughters were going to turn into smoothies they had so many at the swim up pool bar!! There was entertainment every night and it did not disappoint. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. Housekeeping did a great job every day. We were truly pampered at this all inclusive resort. We bought it through costco and that made the transfers very convenient.
For our excursions we went through Erik Garcia on the beach. He set up four separate excursions for us and they were all excellent! Erik did a great job of setting us up with a really cool tour guide known as Sosa. He looked after my family as if they were his own and took us to some unique places for lunch and breakfast for authentic food. After the first tour with Sosa I told Erik we werent going on another tour unless we could have Sosa and Erik graciously complied!
The combination of Westin Playa Conchal and Erik Garcia's tours made this vacation one of the best ever!
So we travel a lot and rented a house on the Reserva Conchal property for ourselves and our 3 year old. Our transfer from the airport was good, got us checked in pretty quickly and to the house. Was told to call for the shuttle, got to the house (which was very nice) and no phone and WhatsApp won't work to business numbers. We had to walk from the house with our little guy and nanny in the pouring rain back to the office to try to figure out how we would get around the property. They said email but the majority of the staff in the office just look at you with blank stares. Seem very nice, but totally inexperienced and have no authority to make any decisions.
One of the toilets didn't work in the house which they did fix the next day. It rained continuously the five days we were there, not one ray of sunshine. Avoid going to this part of Costa Rica from April to November if that is important to you. It is very challenging with a 3 year old in the pouring ran.
We went to the W (which was empty) for lunch, was told my concierge we could charge to the room. Even the shuttle driver called to confirm. We got there, and they couldn't do it. Became a big production since we already ordered food and didn't have a wallet as right from the beach club.
Tried to go to dinner, all restaurants at W were closed because of low season and Westin wouldn't take us (said no openings for non guests). We took the shuttle back to the office and asked them to help us, they made a few calls and said we could go back. But not worth it and so we just skipped dinner. Really ruined our 10 year anniversary.
This is not a full service resort. You are much better off going to Four Seasons if you are going to rent a house, it's worth the extra money. I would consider returning here out of the rainy season but would stay at the W.
They eventually gave us 10% off our charges but nowhere near made up for the inconveniences and problems we had. They just aren't ready for prime time yet with the houses, lots of construction and inexperienced staff. I think in 5 years this will be a really nice property, until then, stay away. Hope maybe I can prevent someone else from making the same mistake we did.
My family and I are just finishing up a 4 night stay. We stayed in a beautiful villa on the property grounds. Everyone of the staff members we met (Carol, Sergio, Jason, Angelo, Eric, Christopher - just to name a few) were unbelievably friendly and accommodating. While it’s the start of rainy season, It rained only twice and for only a brief time. We literally had the pools, beach and restaurants to ourselves. From my perspective mid to late May is an ideal time to visit. Amazing.
