The only thermal-spa destination in the whole of northwest France, Bagnoles-de-l’Orne is tucked away in the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park, surrounded by forest of cedars and sequoias. Staying here is like stepping back in time – the Belle Epoque, to be precise – and you’ll discover a number of grand period buildings grouped around a picturesque lake. Among these is the charming family-run Hotel Bois Joli, a 19th-century Anglo-Norman villa that oozes traditional French style and boasts a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
Inside, you’ll find a host of original features that will transport you back to days of yore themselves. The cozy public lounge is stacked full of antiques, with a piano taking pride of place. The high-ceilinged, oak-paneled restaurant showcases classic seasonal fare with many ingredients, such as wild mushrooms and game, sourced directly from the forest. Enjoy a relaxing sojourn in the town’s recently renovated spa center; roll the dice in the casino; bet at the nearby racecourse; or simply enjoy a stroll around the lake or through the woods. It’s said that the thermal waters in these parts have magical properties. After a stay at Hotel Bois Joli, you may say the same of the entire town.
Overlooking the manicured gardens, traditionally styled Superior Double or Twin rooms are individually decorated, with warm tones, and come with antique furniture and hand-picked fabrics. There will be a TV and complimentary Wi-Fi, as well.
Dine in style in the wood-paneled dining room, in front of an impressive carved-wood fireplace. Chef Loic Malfilatre presents dishes sourced from land and sea, using market-fresh ingredients, such as foraged wild mushrooms and local game.
The hotel sits near the center of town, just a five-minute walk from the lake, not far from the racecourse and the casino. You can walk to Les Thermes de Bagnoles de l'Orne spa baths in around 10 minutes. Activities in the surrounding area include horseback riding, Nordic walking, hiking, mountain biking and archery.
