Recently-renovated, palatial stalwart perfectly positioned in historic Syntagma Square with views of the Acropolis
The King George is an institution — not just a hotel — in Athens, and its décor and furnishing reflect its dignified place in Greek life. Classical columns meet swaths of heavy silk, parquet floors gleam and delicate antiques, from desks to bedside lamps to hand-woven rugs, grace the 78 rooms and 24 suites. Just reopened in June, the hotel underwent a major renovation before its entry into Starwood’s Luxury Collection.
Bed & Bath
The elegant rooms have been completely made over in the recent renovation and the new color scheme mixes golds and creams. Marble bathrooms are luxurious and include separate showers. The best rooms have magnificent views onto the Greek Parliament and the city skyline with the Acropolis as its centerpiece. The two-bedroom Royal Penthouse suite comes complete with a private terrace, Jacuzzi and pool all looking onto the Parthenon.
Tudor Hall Restaurant on the seventh floor must rate as one of the world’s best restaurants with a view. Breakfast on fresh Greek yogurt, local honeys and warm, sweet pastries as the sun rises on the Parthenon. Enjoy a fruity regional white wine and a bowl of juicy green olives from Kalamata as dusk falls on the famous Athenian skyline, then dine on international favorites and Greek specialties like tender lamb and feta cheese.
In the Area
Behind the hotel are the charming streets of Pláka, lined with shops displaying beautifully worked Byzantine gold jewelry. Highlights are Maris, with stunning gem-set heavy gold rings and necklaces, and Takis Jewellery, with eye-catching designs drawing on classical ancient Greek symbols. Walk up the main thoroughfare of Mitropoleos to the City’s magnificent Cathedral and the not-to-be-missed 12th-century "Little Cathedral" next door, with its richly ornate Orthodox interiors.
